Issue No.112 – March 2004

News by Simon Palmer

Welcome to New Members

Allan Molyneux. Allan lives in Ipswich. He has done a few triathlons and duathlons before. He has recently moved out of London. He has done the Alton Duathlon.

Oliver Calver. Oliver lives in Woodbridge and has come into the sport from mountain biking. He did some triathlons last year, including Culford and wants to get more involved in the sport.

I hope you make them welcome when you see them around.

Derrick Smith from Ipswich. Derrick ‘has done a few’ triathlons. His claim to fame is that he completed the Ironman Germany last year. As he says ‘he can keep going!!’

Michael Jones from Haughley near Stowmarket will also add to our strength. Michael has been running for Stow Striders over the winter and has produced some excellent results in road running. I also know that he is no mean time triallist as well.

Susie Scorer Lives at Leiston. Ran a superb 69 minute for her first attempt at 10 miles in the recent Bentley 10 for third place female. Congratulations!

I hope you make them all welcome when you see them around.

Congratulations to Graham White 2003 Suffolk 5mile champion and Suffolk 10 mile champion in 45 – 50 category. I have just received confirmation. Nice to see there’s still life in the old boy!!

Congratulations to Dave Copland for finishing second veteran in the Eastern Area Cyclo Cross League. Dave is a relative newcomer to cyclo cross and finished only 6 points out of 180 behind the winner.

Congratulations to the Ladies team of Susie Scorer, Heather Haywood , Kate Stannett and Lou Tanous who tied for first place in the Gt. Bentley 10 mile road race. (We were warded second place on a count back but I won’t mention that.)

Club Championship

These races count towards the club championship. Our own promotions are not included, nor events on the dame day as our races. The best 4 races count and you are allocated a score calculated as a ratio of your time to the person’s time who finished 40% down the field. Separate men’s and women’s calculations. Races carry a tariff according to the level of competition and then the whole thing is multiplied by an integer to give a nice round number. If you score 100 you have done extremely well! Sounds complex but it does work and irons out any inconsistencies caused by different strengths of field. Honest.

7/5/07 Cambridge Duathlon 7km/35kn/7km

?/9/04 Blackwater triathlon - 400m/23km/6km

There may be further additions to the list as the season progresses. However as long as the event is a BTA sanctioned event in the Eastern area and it is not midweek, it is not off road and it doesn’t clash with a date for our events and pull away valuable marshals it will count!

Walden triathlon cancelled to be replaced by the Bedford Tractors Triathlon.

Culford Triathlon Change of Date. The advertised date of July 18th is not possible because we cannot get the pool. The event will take place one week later on Sunday 25th July.

Ipswich Junior Triathlon Change of Date. The original date clashes with the return of school so the new date will be

Sunday 29th August.

The website is up and running at Ipswich-triathlon.org Many thanks to Charlie Stannett for setting it up. He has clearly spent a lot of time designing the site. Do visit it!

New Club Kit many thanks to Adrian Green ably supported by Kate and Charlie Stannett who have designed a new club kit. We will still be keeping the old style running vest. A committee meeting was convened to judge the best designs. The new kit will be in club colours of red black and white and there will be a variety of cycling and triathlon garments available. When Adrian has the artwork ready Charlie will scan it onto the website. There will be at least an eight week gap before the new kit is available and prices will be published later. I suspect that the kit will sell at roughly the same price as the old kit. This price was heavily subsidised.

Ipswich Borough Council has offered sponsorship for coaching courses. Denis Spashett has already used some of the money to fund his coaching qualifications. If anyone else is interested in a coaching qualification please contact Denis or myself.

SUFFOLK CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE
Bungay Cross Country by Fraser Hale

The Bungay Cross Country fixture brought the Suffolk League series to a close on Sunday 22nd February. Five club "representatives" braved the sleet and wind prior to the start: The redoubtable Susannah Rosenberg, the incomparable Dave Copland, the ubiquitous Steve Robinson, Steve's brother Mark and myself. An interesting and winding route took us across just over five miles of Broome Heath, a picturesque area of grass and gorse dotted with wetland pools and even the odd specimen of waterfowl.
Despite my own, rather "modest" performance, the team did well, with standout performances from Dave and Steve. As usual the post race catering and the generally welcoming atmosphere topped off an enjoyable morning's exercise. Having taken part in the series for the first time this year I must confess to being hooked. The emphasis on team, rather than individual, performance makes a nice change to the focus of the summer season and as placings, not times, are what matter you can forget the watch and focus on the back of the guy in front. A great way to stay fit through the off season, I recommend it to any one who wants to build some leg strength and stamina before the Spring. And that's all of us, isn't it? See you there next winter.

Bungay 10k / 20k by Suzannah Rosenburg

There was a good turnout of ITC members at this very well organised race. With a choice of two distances - 10k for the County Championships and 20k for the foolhardy - most of our club runners were the fools... err, is that right?
All the usual suspects were there, plus a few of the lesser spotted variety.
There was free pre-race massage which got my muscles nicely warmed up. The start was at the school gate with clear pace markers (minutes per km). I snuggled into the 5-6 minutes per km section along with the gang I run with at the cross-country. Dave C was up front with the big boys. And we were off...
The course was well-marked and there were plenty of marshals. The 10k was an out-and-back route, while the 20k was a keyhole shape. The course had a couple of hills and an evil incline in the last 500 metres. Two rather nifty Norfolk runners gave David Miller a run for his money. Rob Joy came in first at 30.53. I was hot on his heels at 54:35, not a pb, but I was pleased with my time.
At the finish line we were given a bottle of St Peters organic ale - yum! and there was plenty of hot vegetable soup. This kept me warm while I waited for the first 20k bunch to finish. Matt Whitfield of Bingley Harriers came in at 66.06 - 3 minutes ahead of the second runner. Fortunately Dave (Copland) came in 30th at 78.29 (a pb I think) , so I could get out of the fresh air and cover up. It was a tough choice between a cup of tea and biscuits or the bouncy castle. Couldn't do both or we'd have spilled the tea. We queued up for an extensive free post-race massage. By the time it was our turns the presentation was underway. Picture me all relaxed, delighted the race was over, having my muscles manipulated by a strong young man, when I heard my name announced. Blimey - I was 3rd in my age group (40-44) in the County Championships. Result.
