News by Simon Palmer

Apologies for the rushed version of ITCH. I have been too busy to complete it on time and have thrown it together in great haste – apologies for any omissions mistakes.

Welcome to new members

Jaqueline and Karl Chubb who live in Rede near Bury St Edmunds. They have move into the area recently and have competed in many triathlons. Karl will be doing some local time trials I believe.  Jackie has a massage clinic at Moreton Hall Leisure Club on Mondays (see back pages for details)

Lucy Bowditch who lives in Ipswich and is a member of Ipswich Jaffa running club. She has suffered a back problem recently and is coming into triathlons. She is looking forward to her first triathlon sometime this year.

Colin Thomas lives in Stowmarket and is a member of Stowmarket Striders. Looking forward to a few triathlons this year and is keen to improve his swimming.

Dave Husband Dave is an ex rugby player who lives in Washbrook. He is keen to join a group for cycling training.

If you see them around at races please make yourself known to them and welcome them aboard!

Congratulations to Phil Hetzel on winning the inaugural Wednesday evening time trial of the year. A position he has frequently occupied but not reported upon in these pages because he has just joined the club.

Congratulations are also due to all our marathon runners. Tonya Antonis completed the Bungay marathon in a superb 3.34 to come home 7th Female. Gail Pryke was 140th Woman home in the London Marathon in a time of 3.11. Other results in Running section but nobody wrote an article!

A Drink at the County and an opportunity to socialise and meet other club members see Gary’s article in Captain’s corner.

Swim training

Ipswich High School apologise but due to half term break there will be no swimming session on 4th June 2005. The first session was a great success with 12 members taking advantage of a first class facility and a pretty good training session - yes Kate you still need to do speed work! Anyone interested should check out the website for details. On 21st May neither Jeff or Tonya will be available so we need a volunteer to take money and also to act as lifeguard - NO LIFEGUARD = NO SWIM SESSION. See you there on the 7th May,  9.00 am start.

CAPTAINS CORNER –Gary Matthews

On behalf of Tonya and I, as your Men and Ladies Captains, I would like to invite you to join us for drinks at The County Pub, St Helens Street, Ipswich from 8 pm on the 2nd Thursday of each month starting on Thursday 12 May 2005. It would be nice to be able to get together on a regular basis so dates for your diary for the following few months will be 12 May, 9 June and 14 July. Please come along. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. The County also does decent food just in case any of you don’t have time to eat before coming out!
Unfortunately there will be one less would be Ironman this year as with much disappointment I have had to withdraw from IMUK and indeed all the other events I had entered this year. I have had a knee injury since December which despite physio was not improving. Whilst I can swim and bike I can’t run. A visit to the Orthopod confirmed I had a tear to the cartilage which requires surgery. I am due to have the op in June which leaves me time for a few more bike rides, two thirds of the Bala Tri and maybe even a time trial debut. After that, a summer of rehab and then hopefully fit and ready for next season. So unfortunately I will be a rather inactive captain this year but will be there to support and encourage you all from the side lines. So make sure you all train hard and good luck to you all in achieving your goals for the season.

Triathlon

Club Championship

The club championship has been widened out to cover all BTA sanctioned events in the country. This will allow competitors who are ‘more selective’ in their races to compete in the club championships. If you wish a race to be considered you must supply Nick Collinson with the results for the race. He has kindly volunteered to administer the championship tally this year. Your best 4 races will count. There is a maximum of 2 duathlons, off road events and midweek events (unless on a bank holiday) can not count.

Sizzler Training Session 3rd April (300m / 21k / 4k ) Simon Palmer

The Sizzler series training session at Culford School provided club members with a fine try out for the new Culford swim. i.e. ducking under the ropes at the end of each length. This effectively eliminates any miscounting of lengths. It was a fine spring morning and those who turned out found it an ideal ‘pipe opener’ for the season ahead. Many thanks to Steve Robinson and to Grayhame Fish for organising the event and timekeeping. On a personal point of view I was heartened at surviving the run without injury – my first triathlon for 3 years gives me hope that I shall be back competing soon – I had forgotten how hard the run is in a triathlon even the 4k really knackered me!

Running

London Marathon

Gail Pryke writes - I ran 3.11 for marathon. Very happy with that although I have run 3.09 for it before but with rest beforehand. I worked  3x18 hour days at the exhibition; one of them was with Paula - a good chat about our sensitive stomachs.... I didn’t stop with mine on Sunday - too many people I knew in the crowd and would have to face in the shop and future races! Looking ahead to New York in November. Who knows I might even do a triathlon on between!

(Haven’t heard from anyone else!  - Ed.)

Bungay Marathon and Half Marathon..3.04.05  Jeff Irving

The running of the 23rd Bungay Black Dog marathon and half marathon took place on an uncharacteristic bright and sunny April Sunday morning. With their usual well organised and well oiled machine the Black Dog running club had closed roads on the outskirts of the town centre to accommodate hundreds of runners of all abilities that congregated from near and far to do battle over an undulating and at times unforgiving and testing course.

ITCH’ers in the form of Tonya and Sarah Strivens were representing the club at the full distance, both for different reasons. Sarah was there to banish the 4-hour demons that had haunted her, and Tonya was testing her Ironman legs in preparation for Frankfurt in July.

The “half ITCH’erswere more abundant. The ever enthusiastic and organic Kate and Charlie were there in preparation for London. Nick Bestow, together with Ady Green and Sue Hargadon completed the line up for the club, each with their own targets in mind.

The full distance event started at 10.30am prompt and Richard Jordan from Ipswich Jaffa made the early running hotly pursued by Allan Smalls of Colchester Harriers, leaving the remaining runners in their wake. Once we had seen them off the half itchers returned to the HQ and I pedalled my way towards Halesworth to meet up with the ITCHY Posse of Nick and Heather “Etape de Tour” Collinson, Mark “Ironman Lanzerote” Ramsey, and Gary “IMUK” Matthews. We rode most of the first lap cheering on everyone until the posse left for home.

With Tonya and Sarah well into the second lap of their run, the half got under way with Paul Dobson of Springfield Striders making the early pace for the men and his team mate Tracey Apps for the women. In the full Richard Jordan had obviously suffered as Allen Smalls was well in the lead with the Ipswich Jaffa vet nowhere to be seen. This did not alter and Smalls finished the victor in a time of 2.40.27?  Helen Decker led for the women from the off and finished strongly in first place in 3.13.27.

First ITCHer home and 7th lady overall, winning the lady vet 35yrs trophy was Tonya in a time of 3.34.56 – a marathon best time by 30 minutes! Sarah “I’ll never do one again” Strivens rid herself of those 4-hour demons by over 2 minutes finishing in a creditable 3.57.38.

Following the pattern of the full distance event the leadership of the half did not change throughout with Dobson and Apps taking the honours for Springfield Striders in times of 1.14.13 and 1.27.22 respectively. Nick Bestow led the “half ITCH’ers” home in a time of 1.45.35 with the rest of the team relatively closely packed. Charlie came home in 1.59.42, smashing the two-hour barrier! Kate followed him in with a 2.02.12, Ady with a 2.04.39 and Sue with a courageous 2.10.58.

Riding the course in the opposite direction (three times) proved to be a great way of observing and cheering on the team, who all did fantastically well over a tough course. Well done to them, and to everyone who achieved their own goals!
