Welcome to the ITCH for Solmoneth* 2007...

Solmoneth?

What IS he going on about? Well, according to Sandi Toksvig, writing in the Sunday Telegraph, the Anglo-Saxons used to call this time of year "Solmoneth" ... meaning "mud month". It seems just a little bit too appropriate not to use, given that our race reports include two different New Years mud fests, the Suffolk County cross-country championships, and an update from Steve following the Stowmarket cross-country at Haughley Park. Oh yes, and we have news of a bog-snorkling triathlon...

Next month ... more "TITCH" than "ITCH" - Ady Green has been busy putting together a junior training event (spread the word - it will be on April 15th, at Framlingham) as well as working with John Gabriel on a "code of conduct". Details will begin appearing on the website over the next couple of weeks.

Cheers - and thanks for all the positive feedback, Ch.

All in all a quiet month...

I hope you’ve all pondered which races you’ll be taking part in this year and have started entering, as triathlon is getting ever popular and races fill up quickly. Waveney is a classic example and filled up within days. Norwich Tri which is our club championship race is approximately half full with a good proportion of Ipswich people doing it, so if like myself you stand no chance of winning, at least it will be a great day out with so many people in red and black taking part.

Bad news on Woolverstone pool being out of action again. Keep an eye on the website for latest info, or let me have your mobile number is you want me to text you.

I did manage to make the cross country at Haughley Park on the 21st ( although I wish I hadn’t, I didn’t run well) and once again, good to see so many club people taking part. It was what you might call a proper cross country course, up hill, down hill, muddy, windy, and hard work. There’s only one race left in the series so if you fancy a challenge, come along to Noughton Park, Bury St Edmunds on the 04th of Feb for 5 miles of muddy fun.

Thursday runs are going well with a good turnout again even on the cold and freezing evenings. A slow steady pace to make sure of no slipping works well (Sue tripped on a paving slab, nothing to do with the weather), please come along, the hot shower and a pint afterwards is very welcome, plus you feel you’ve earned it.

Happy training everyone.

Maldon Mud Run - New Years eve! 2006

What a way to end 2006, running in the Maldon Mud run! Although not really an endurance event (300m), it could be referred to an a Mini Aquathlon.

I would recommend this to anyone in the club.

My team placed 3rd but it was sheer effort of trying to run in mud - better than any hill session, low impact.

At one point I had to do a reality check. I felt like I was sprinting but my body was only walking. I will be doing it again this year if anyone is interested let me know.

Ant can be contacted on antony.birt@bt.com

The 53-12 charity XC - 1st January 2007

Full of bright ideas for 2007, I'd thought I'll start the year as I meant to go on, so New Years Day saw me drive down the A12 in the sun to 53-12 for their 5mile run.

Seeing as we met in the middle of an industrial estate and my geography of Colchester is poor, I'd thought I'll just run in my normal shoes ... having treated myself to some new spikes the week before Christmas. "How muddy can it be" I'd thought. Highwoods Park is just a stroll away from the shop and, yes, very muddy.

About 50 of us lined up at the start, after Ed had announced he'd moved the course a little to avoid some big puddles. Off we set across the open parkland towards the tracks and pathways around the park into the woodland. For a small 'fun' fundraiser, it was well supported, and plenty of marshalls around the two lap course, and lots of new years day walkers out with the dog all offering their support too.

The open grass areas were hard work and slippery, and there were some good old muddy boggy areas that I just about managed to stay upright through. One short sharp uphill took you back onto the 2nd lap, and I managed to keep the leading lady in my sight pretty much the whole race which is a novelty. The tracks through the wooded area of the park were fairly easy going, before you came out onto the last open grass area back to the finish and the small cheering crowd, before going back to the shop for tea and biscuits!

All in all a good friendly 'relaxed' race to start the year off and fully recommended, although very glad I'd been fairly sensible on New Year's Eve, declining the cocktails from midnight onwards...

Claire Page at 53-12 tells us they raised over £700. The results were:

1st man - Nathan Miller (53-12 Multisport) - 30:58
2nd man - Dave Copland - 31:40
nth man - Charlie Stannett, 45:45

1st lady - Charlotte Knappett (CATS) - 38:55
2nd lady - Michelle Constable - 41:05
nth lady - Kate Stannett - 46:49

Susannah Rosenberg opted for the 5km "sensible" route, finishing in 35:53.

Steve Robinson

Suffolk County cross-country championships - Sunday 7th January

Well you could not have asked for anything better than this - dark rain clouds scudding across the sky, a nearby river about to flood and then there was the course. Vicious descents after sharp climbs, loads of surface water and much varied terrain. No! cross country running does not get much better than this!

How did we all do?

Ben Splashett, running for Ipswich Harriers, floated around the difficult conditions for a splendid 4th place . Watch out for him in multi-sports this summer!

Young James Powley had another excellent run, 5th in u13 boys, just 23 secs off the bronze medal position and we had complete teams in the mens and womens events.

Michelle Constable led the womens team in 22nd place, Kate Stannett and Sue Hargadon completed the team in 39th and 45th position respectively. Anne Fish, Striders 33rd, Annette White 40th Bounders and Maria Reynolds, Striders,47th completed the picture. So all in the top 50! But only doing the 6k course- maybe it could be 12k next year . I will have a word with the organisers and remind them of European directives on equal rights

PS - I've just remembered seeing Sarah (Miller) at the end and missed her out - not used to the new name yet sorry but you seemed very happy at the end so hope you had a good run.

Derrick Smith is having a consistently good season finishing in 27th place with Graham White slightly over a minute behind in 35th place. Mark Hird, taking a break from moutain biking just missed out on a top 50 spot was next in 55th. At the other end of the field came Oliver Calver, Steve Robinson and Charlie Stannett.

But all had an extremely enjoyable time and you have to admit Charlie it is excellent training............ Oh yes it is!!

Suffolk County cross-country championships - Derrick's report

Last year Derrick's big race was Ironman Nice - long distance, tarmac & heat. Which had him craving something a little shorter, on mud, and in colder conditions. The XC championships were absolutely spot on in every regard. Even his race report was shorter...

"The club had a good turn out for the County Championships at Hadleigh in what turned out to be a tough event. A killer hill in the  3 lap circuit for the men and a 2 laps for the ladies seemed to get longer, steeper and slipperier with each lap."

Fancy some Welsh summer mud?

The World Bog Snorkeling Triathlon Championships take place in Llanwrtyd Wells, Mid Wales on 8th July 2007 (a week after the Club championships). The race consists of a 12 mile off-road run, a 120 yard bog snorkel and a 19 mile off road bike ride.

For anyone who doesn't know what bog snorkeling is, there's a narrow trench cut into a peat bog. The idea is that you have to get from one end to the other. Simple, but as the organisers say, "Conventional swimming strokes are NOT permitted. Flippers must be used for propulsion only and hands used for doggy paddle only - any other strokes = disqualification."

The atmosphere at the race is light-hearted (how could it be anything else in a race like this?) I think this would be a great laugh if we can get a group from ITC together for it.

See http://llanwrtyd-wells.powys.org.uk/bogtriathlon.htm for more information or contact Dave Copland if you're interested.

Enough mud! Here's some other stuff...

Club kit

Heather & Nick Collinson have just moved house. They needed a bigger house to store the club's kit supplies.  You can still contact Heather about kit orders by e-mailing kit@ipswich-tri.org but their home number is now 01473 611582 and their address is 14 Spindler Close, Kesgrave, Ipswich, IP5 2DA.

Heather Collinson

Simon Lockwood shortly before getting off his bike the hard way...

Heather Collinson models the black & red in the gilet format...

The club kit represents great value for money and is also rather contemporary in design. There are a wide range of garments available to order although I keep a smaller selection in stock. Feedback I have had in terms of performance of the kit is good. I wear the cycle shirt and gillet and both have washed and worn very well. I have been told that the shorts are comfortable and the jackets are certainly up to the job during long winter rides. The one piece tri-suits look great but size- wise are not suitable for everyone and there are 2 piece suits with shorts of variable lengths to try.

I try to keep the stock levels of commonly required items up, but more expensive and less requested items such as skin suits or thermal jackets are ordered as necessary. Unfortunately when I place an order we have to have a minimum of 30 items and each item has to be duplicated in size. this means that is only practical to place about 2 orders a year. I need to know well in advance of race season or winter training if you would like a special items as it can take 2 months for the kit to arrive.

Contrary to popular belief we do not make any profit on the kit and in fact sell it to members at less than the price we buy it for. I try to be flexible regarding collection of kit and members are welcome to come to my house by arrangement to try items on. I will post things to regular members if they are not too bulky. During race season I will make an effort to come to some local races with kit if there is demand for it.

Click here to download the current price list - including availability as at December 2006 - as a PDF file.

Nick Collinson

Nick Collinson, our Chairman for 2006, digs in on the run at 30km in IM Nice, showing the black & red...

Why you should race in club kit

One of the complaints I heard most frequently last year when I was both chairman and club championship co-ordinator was the rule about club kit. In 2006 you had to wear club kit to qualify for the championship. Sadly the same rule does not apply in 2007. Those of you at the AGM will be aware of the views expressed there on this issue. To be frank I think it’s a great shame that some club members aren't prepared to race in club kit. The claim that it doesn't fit are also ridiculous as there are so many different items of kit to choose from.

I presume we are all proud to be members of ITC, otherwise why bother joining. Runners, cyclists and swimmers don't seem to have any issues competing in their club's kit, indeed most clubs make it a prerequisite of competition. Why then do some of our members still baulk at the idea of wearing our kit for races.

We have a new kit supplier, so complaints about the kit no longer being of good quality are totally unfounded. I have been wearing the same ITC kit for 2 years now and its still as good as new. Comfort isn't a factor either. I've done Etape du Tour in the cycle kit and several half-Ironman races and last year Ironman France in the ITC tri-shorts and tri-singlet. Fit also isn't an issue. I'm a 6ft 5in bean pole and it fits me. Other members are shaped quite differently (eg our ITCH editor) and it fits them. We have such a vast array of kit to chose from that those with fit 'issues' can choose from; a running vest, a tri-singlet, a tri-suit, a cycle jersey, a t-shirt, a gillet, a long sleeved top. I've seen members race in all of these, there really is something for everyone and its all club kit!

Finally its not about making money for the club. The kit is heavily subsidised, so you are most unlikely to get better value anywhere else. For me its about being proud to be a member of ITC and to show that, when we are racing. Its great kit, and highly visible- we receive many compliments from other clubs on the design.

Come on, let's promote our club!

Are you new to the club - let me have a few words & a (small) photo and I'll try and include them in future issues of ITCH...

Introducing Simon Lockwood...

This picture was taken 85miles into the dragon ride in Wales. Five minutes before (or was that after? ed.) this picture I was thrown over the handle bars when my legs locked out with cramp.

Mad! So I've booked to do it again this year ha ha!

Ok - I'm a new member. I started running five years ago then cycling three years ago.  This year will be my 3rd London triathlon. I've done Norwich, Clacton, Ipswich duathlon.

I time trial for Stowmarket cycle club, now I can run race and triathlons for Ipswich tri -,just love the feel of competition - such a buzz being involved and around people who all have person goals!

Feel I've wasted so many years not knowing what I want out of life but now I feel I have!

You can contact Simon at thelockwoodtribe@ntlworld.com - if you dare!

John Gabriel

Simon Lockwood shortly before getting off his bike the hard way...

John Gabriel reviews the Quest Como wheelset...

On Test – Quest Como Wheels

Needing a new set of training wheels so I could use my new cyclo cross bike for winter training I was quite taken by the Como wheelset available from Quest Bikes. Deep rims and bladed spokes at £59.99 for the set seemed too good to be true but having used the wheels for some time now I must admit they are a bargain.

Based on a 30mm deep rim the wheels come laced with 20 spokes in front and 24 spokes in rear, the spokes being an impressive black stainless steel bladed variety and radially laced in front wheel making it more aerodynamic. The freehubs are Quests own brand but seem fine so far and the braking surface is very well machined.

They are available in Shimano (£59.99) or Campag (£69.99) depending upon your preference + £10 for postage (mine came next day!).

Would I race on them – depending on the options of your other wheels I possibly would although they are slightly heavier than others at 930g (front) and 1220g (rear).

In short an ideal set of replacement wheels to save your good ones or a decent set of deep rims wheels at a bargain price. They were also tested in Cycling Plus recently and were given 10/10 – quite impressive!

Available from Quest Bikes at www.questbikes.co.uk or 0208 427 5454

Some club news you may have missed during January

Entries are now open for Culford - this will count toward the ITCH league but please remember we need volunteers to make it happen so if you are doing it, ask a friend to volunteer on your behalf.
And if you've already done it a few times...

Have you renewed your membership? If you've lost your form, download another copy from the website.
(If you're a senior member you need only print & complete the front of the form. The additional information on the rear of the form will be needed for any junior members. Membership subscriptions continue, in effect, to be subsidised by the events we hold which is why you must undertake to help crew at least one of our events as part of your membership subscription.)

Swimming cancelled until further notice - Woolverstone pool has had to be closed because of contaminated water. It remains shut until further notice. We will try to give good notice on the website and/or by e-mail but let Steve dB know your phone number if you want to be on his ring-round list for last minute updates.
Steve can be contacted on 07795 564322 or stevedb@btsgroupuk.com

Don't forget the club training sessions on Thursdays at 7pm at Greshams, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich -  the sessions vary from week to week depending on who is offering to lead them but they will always cater for the abilities of the people who turn up. (And if you can't make the training, then why not join us for a beer or some food from about 8pm onwards.)

08th Feb - Drill session on grass area outside club (as long as we can get the lights on).

15th Feb - Hill session on Valley Road

22nd Feb - 4.5 mile run on level ground

Club championships - do not forget to get your entry in for the club championships – the Norwich triathlon on July 1st, which is a standard ("Olympic") distance race. Entries are now open - visit www.entrycentral.net - and enter direct. We do NOT have any special entry route.
Please - when you are asked to enter your club name, do not enter simply as "Ipswich". Use "Ipswich Triathlon Club" - it makes it a lot easier to see that you're not from JAFFA or Harriers
.
On last count there were 34 people entered as "Ipswich triathlon club" members.

The ITCH league - the committee has endorsed the "ITCH league" on a trial basis. Click here for full details - but note that the early Waveney sprint event is now full. They are putting on a second event in September. How many people are likely to be doing that?

Open water training

We have received a downloadable poster from Graham Perks (Essex Police Triathlon Club) about Open Water Swimming Sessions at Gosfield Lake, Near Braintree, Essex.

Open Water sessions will begin at the lake in late April on Sunday mornings between 6am - 9am. Each session would cost £4.00.

The lake is an excellent venue and provides the ideal circumstances for those open water novices as the lake is approx 5ft deep and therefore the majority of swimmers would be able to put their feet down. For more information on the venue please go to: www.gosfieldlake.co.uk

If members would like to be placed on the email circulation list for the swimming sessions please e-mail kim.graham.perks@virgin.net direct

Caught & Social...

Sarah Miller (nee Strivens) writes...

David (Miller) & I got married on 29th Dec as planned & despite a few last minute hitches (e.g. the original minister being taken into hospital & getting a replacement with a strong Geordie accent & comedy tartan "troosers"!)  it was a wonderful day & I really love being Mrs Miller!

I am attaching a picture for you to include if you have space - there were so many it was hard to chose!  Digital photography is a marvellous thing  - it was still strange looking at the pictures at the reception though!!"

All of which begs two questions:

  • how did Sarah meet David when he's always at the pointy end of the field while Sarah is back chatting at the social end?
  • has Sarah made David a second-claim member under the family membership deal?

We all know that David runs first-claim for Woodbridge - but my spies tell me that David will be seen at the London triathlon...

Best wishes!
