ITCH March 2007

Welcome to the ITCH for March 2007... somewhat thinner than hoped for - must be Lent or something!

The main contributor this month is our Junior Co-ordinator Ady Green.
Other contributions this month: Lauren Clipstone - Steve de Boltz - Julia Yelloly

titch?

As promised, more "TITCH" than "ITCH" - Ady Green has put together a junior training event on April 15th, at Framlingham, and entries are now already coming in for our Junior event in August, also at Framlingham.

If you "refresh" your browser enough times (try pressing the F5 key) when you visit the website, you will also see that we now have a mini-site www.ipswich-tri.org/titch to support Ady's work.

And this month's profiled member is ... well, read on and find out!

This ITCH is somewhat later than I should have liked. For next month's issue please try and get things to me by close of play Monday 2nd April. That will let me feature feedback from Bungay marathon - I know of four members who are going for it - but I would really appreciate some swim or bike-related contributions. So, if you're doing Diss, could you offer to send in some words?

Cheers - and thanks for all the positive feedback, Ch.

Men's captain Steve de Boltz enjoys the mud at Haughley Park...

Another month has passed and now it’s March.

Diss Duathlon is only days away, which must mean the season is coming up fast. I’m presuming you’ve all been training hard keeping to your own strict schedules, as going by the people that turn up to club training sessions, it’s still a bit scarce and I really don’t know why. Thursdays are perfect for a run as it’s a lot more motivating to run in a group than plodding on your own (and safer),  as any of the regulars will say turning up every week, plus the chat and food afterwards are an added bonus. Saturday swimming is picking up and thanks go to Kat for setting our drills each week.

I managed to surprise myself, and others, by making it round the Great East Run and have to say I actually quite enjoyed it - the good weather helped I’m sure.  It was nice to see a great turnout from the club with plenty of supporters at a very well organised event. The biggest cheer during the prize giving was for Derek when he picked up his award for 3rd place in his age group. It was funny to see that Ross and Mark had made the mistake of thinking it was fancy dress, (apparently they are going to do Norwich dressed as a pantomime horse!).

Happy training everyone.

Also, is anyone interested in entering a team (or two, or three, etc) in the national club relays to be held on the 11th of August in Nottingham. If so can they let Steve de Boltz know and we’ll see if we can put at least a team together to represent our club. Details are at www.pacesetterevents.com.

Steve can be contacted on 07795 564322 or stevedb@btsgroupuk.com

Ady Green

Ady, who is our development co-ordinator - talks about his coaching course but also about spreading the word to his local school.

British Triathlon Level 1 Coaching Course - January 2007

As part of my role new as Junior Co-ordinator I decided to get involved with the coaching. Having never coached before, apart from helping a mate with football coaching a few times, I had to start with the fundamentals.

The BTF level 1 course is more about “How to Coach” rather than “What to Coach” and it positions you for a role as Assistant Coach to a more experienced coach like John Gabriel (Level 2). The course had 18 applicants….only 16 returned for the assessment on the 3rd of Feb.  Most people attending the course were interested in coaching adults however there were a few interested in junior coaching.

The course went through 3 practical lessons in each sport in the fantastic facilities at Loughborough University. There was also a home study module on Child Protection.

It was a most enjoyable 3 days (2 weekends) and I meet some great people. I believe that it would be a great benefit to the club if a few more people took this course.

The club sponsored my application course and I am sure would aid others who wished to take up a coaching role within the club.

Healthy Schools Week at Stradbroke Primary - February 2007.

I spent a very enjoyable day with all 4 classes at Stradbroke Primary School on 7th of February. I was invited to speak about Triathlon and my exploits in Ironman UK 2005 as part of “Healthy Schools Week”.

I had a very good entrance planned of “Guess the Sportsman”. As I strode into each class in my wetsuit and facemask I had a very captive audience. Most children thought I was a swimmer at first…. although I was also potentially a skier which was a good answer.

I then brought in the second clue of a bike ... and then finally revealed the club colours and began to explain the basic concept of Triathlon. After the basic introduction to Triathlon I continued on to explain all about the lunacy that is an Ironman race.

I took in a number of triathlon related items including some of my collection of medals. All of the children had a great time drawing swimmers, runners and bikes etc.

There were also some very good brass rubbings of my medals.

We had some really interesting questions though the whole day. I think my favourite moment was the answer to my question “Can you think of another word beginning with Tri?”…..I was angling for Triangle (Class 1 are 4-6 year old) …. I was not expecting Triceratops (A type of Dinosaur) . Neither was I expecting two 5 year olds to discuss the mathematical concept of infinity…..When I went to school it was reading, writing and arithmetic at 5 years old. Now it is Palaeontology and Astro Physics (I jest of course !)

It was also a very good opportunity to advertise the junior section of the club and I hope to see some of the children at the Training Day in April and hopefully the race in August.

We also had a brief photo-shoot with the some children from Class 2 from the Diss Express which will also hopefully give some good, positive exposure to the school, club, the junior section and the proposed ITC events.
[STOP PRESS - it made the front page of the Diss Express]

I would like to thank all the children and teachers especially Mrs Sullivan for making me feel so welcome…(They have the website details and I know they will be reading this article)……I hope they remember the key aspect of any sport….it must be fun.

I highly recommend it to any senior triathlete (who is not a teacher) to try something like this and spread the word of the joy of our sport. It was personally an incredibly rewarding experience……..it is up there with the Ironman on my list of personal achievements.

Anyone interested in helping at juniors events please contact Ady by e-mailing juniors@ipswich-tri.org or ringing 01379-388855.
You will also find a new mini-site dedicated to Juniors at www.ipswich-tri.org/titch

Bungay 20km

A bright February morning but not too cold.
Great to meet up with everyone at the start, and to meet Steve De B's wife and kid too.
It's a nice course, but that hill at the end, well those two hills at the end, are real killers!
Soup and Elgood's beer go down very well though. Great hot showers too!
The Black Dog running club run an excellent race as always - thanks.

Congratulations to Derrick Smith who got the loudest cheer of the prize-giving when he went up to receive his prize for 3rd M50.

Bury St Edmunds "Muscular Dystrophy" 20mile

The bus ride was a positive experience with quite an atmosphere building inside and lots of chat about marathons!
Met up with the Ipswich group and a few others. It's nice to see everyone there.
The start was a bit muddy. Strange how everyone gets the same mud marks up the back of the right calf - looks like an odd tatoo, or was that just me hallucinating?! Hallucinating too when Simon came round on his bike and I shouted "Hi John". It was great to see you Simon.

Apologies also to people to whom I said "I'm not a talker to" - thinking of getting a t-shirt with "grumpy cow" on the back.

The scenery was lovely and a nice contrast to Bungay, not knowing where on earth we were.
Thanks to the Bury Pacers, a great race with nice marshalls - particularly the young man at 16 miles and the lady at 18.5.
Results at http://www.ipswichjaffa.org.uk/results/recent.php

Some great results from Ipswich people at both - great stuff!

Julia (Gladys) Yelloly will be back at Bungay on 1st April...

Culford full!

Race director Dave Copland - seen last month trying to keep his socks clean - reports:

The Culford Sprint & Youth Triathlon has filled up in record time this year and we are having to operate a waiting list.

If you have already entered but are unable to race, please let Dave know by e-mailing him on  culford@ipswich-tri.org and, as long as we can fill your place, you'll get a refund (minus a £5 administration charge).

You will also make another competitor very happy.

And don't forget - we still need marshals and other volunteers to crew as part of your membership commitment.

Phoebe Collinson

Simon Lockwood shortly before getting off his bike the hard way...

Phoebe Collinson is probably our youngest member but is reportedly spending time training in a paddling pool.
This might be because her ambition is to become a marine biologist
...

Club kit

Phoebe say "I think the club kit looks great and I think everybody should wear it all the time."

"My mum Heather says there is a really wide range of garments available to order but she tries to keep commonly required items in stock, more expensive and less requested items such as skin suits or thermal jackets are ordered as necessary."

Change of telephone number

"She also says to mention that because of something which dad described with some very rude words, our telephone number has changed - it is now 01473-620651."

You can still contact Heather Collinson about kit orders by e-mailing kit@ipswich-tri.org and the address remains 14 Spindler Close, Kesgrave, Ipswich, IP5 2DA.

Club championships - do not forget to get your entry in for the club championships – the Norwich triathlon on July 1st, which is a standard ("Olympic") distance race. Entries are open - visit www.entrycentral.net - and enter direct. We do NOT have any special entry route.
Please - when you are asked to enter your club name, do not enter simply as "Ipswich". Use "Ipswich Triathlon Club" - it makes it a lot easier to see that you're not from JAFFA or Harriers
.
On last count there were 35 people entered as "Ipswich triathlon club" members.

Rules - the final rules for the championships are still to be confirmed (so it's not too late to lobby committee members) but proposals include:

Categories

  • Male: open; vet (BT categories H-I); "super" vet (J+)
  • Female: open; vet (BT categories H-I); "super" vet (J+)

In the case of someone placing (say) 2nd open but 1st vet they should take the higher ranking award i.e. 1st vet.

Only first claim members (with respect to triathlon) are eligible, and club kit should be worn. (So if you are first claim Stowmarket Striders for running events but first claim ITC for triathlon, then you are eligible. But you're not eligible if you are competing as a first claim member of - say - Wimbledon triathlon club.)

Have you seen...

  • Cate Meadows has been responsible for a lot of tears since she told us to visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4B-r8KJhlE
  • Simon has had an e-mail from O-donnells claiming to be the exclusive UK distributor for Endurance Films and Velo Gear. Their website will go live shortly but if you wish to place an order immediately, ring 07957-266069 or email martinodonnell21@btopenworld.com
  • Action Medical Research are organising a "challenge bike ride" through rural Suffolk lanes on May 13th offering a choice of 100 or 50 mile routes.  Both routes are circular starting and finishing at Woodbridge passing through Felixstowe, Orford, Dunwich, Framlingham and Debenham.  They are hoping to attract some 300 riders - see www.action.org.uk/takeaction which lists quite a few other events which might be of interest.

Some club news you may have missed...

Have you renewed your membership? If you've lost your form, download another copy from the website.
(If you're a senior member you need only print & complete the front of the form. The additional information on the rear of the form will be needed for any junior members. Membership subscriptions continue, in effect, to be subsidised by the events we hold which is why you must undertake to help crew at least one of our events as part of your membership subscription.)
Subscriptions are due from January. If you do not renew your membership by end of March your membership will lapse.

Swimming is back on - Woolverstone pool is open once more but, as we know, it has occasionally had to be closed at very short notice. Let Steve dB know your phone number if you want to be on his ring-round list for last minute updates.
Steve can be contacted on 07795 564322 or stevedb@btsgroupuk.com

Occasional Saturday morning Alton Water runs - Dave Copland will be doing an Alton Water run next Saturday (17th March) after swimming. He says "I plan to do two short laps (15 miles total). Susannah and Maria will probably do one short lap at a slower pace. Anyone else is welcome to come and do whatever distance and speed suits.
Meet at 10:30 to start running at 10:45 prompt. Tea and optional cakes/bacon butties in the café afterwards."

But the Easter Bunnies social event is off - Thursday night regulars will know that Laura had begun to arrange a social event for Friday 20th April at the Lord Nelson.  Unfortunately that evening is no longer possible so Laura is having to postpone.
If you want to be included contact Laura by e-mailing lorrymay@hotmail.com or call her on 07771-705998.

Don't forget the club training sessions on Thursdays at 7pm at Greshams, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich -  the sessions vary from week to week depending on who is offering to lead them but they will always cater for the abilities of the people who turn up. (And if you can't make the training, then why not join us for a beer or some food from about 8pm onwards.)

15th Mar - Hill session on Valley Road

(17th Mar - Saturday's Woolverstone swim to be followed by Alton Water run - see above)

22nd Mar -  Medium run, down Tuddenham Road, up Woodbridge Road, back along Sidegate Lane/ Colchester Road.

29th Mar - Intervals session. Derrick Smith will take us for some short sharp sprinting/running/jogging probably on Borrowdale Avenue

John Gabriel will be organising some mini training duathlons on some Thursday evenings in the summer. There is no cost, the format is the same as last year, a bike leg of roughly seven miles via Playford and back to the club for a couple of laps around the playing fields. The dates planned are 24th May, 21st June and 19th July. More info to follow nearer the first date.

The ITCH league - click here for full details - but note that the early Waveney sprint event is now full. They are putting on a second event in September. How many people are likely to be doing that? There are also a couple of local standard length events which do not appear in the league - we had to draw the line somewhere but if a lot of people lobby for a particular event to be added we'll consider it. But remember the league is just for fun - the club championship is at Norwich.

And last but most definitely not least...

Will Meadows was awarded 'Young Sports Personality of the Year' by Suffolk Coastal District Council at the Morson Sports Awards on Sunday 11th February.

In addition to receiving the title and a lovely engraved glass trophy he received a cheque for £75.  Suffolk Coastal have asked him to be an "Young Ambassador for Sport in Suffolk".  This role includes going into schools and clubs and promoting sport.  You can be sure his emphasis will be on TRIATHLON!!!  Will is automatically through to the Suffolk Sporting Awards to be held in October 2007 where he will be up against the young finalists from Mid Suffolk and West Suffolk.

The official news reads "The winner of the Kings Models Young Sports Personality of the Year award was William Meadows in tribute to his phenomenal year in triathlon and cycling and his commitment to his sport, education and family. Will’s achievements during the past year include winning the British Triathlon Eastern Region Under 14 Series for Triathlon and Aquathlon, helping the Eastern Region to 3rd place in the Inter-Regional Championships in Glasgow and winning the Under 14 British Schools Hard Track National Championships."
