ITCH April 2007

Welcome to ITCH - the Ipswich triathlon club hand-out - for April 2007...

Contributors this month include: Susannah Rosenberg & Ross Welton, with photographs sent in via Dave Copland and Brian McGeeney.

Cut-off for May's edition: please try and get reports & pictures to me by 1st May.
Many thanks
- and thanks for all the continued, & mostly positive, feedback.

April Fools day saw the red & black of Ipswich turning out in force for the Diss Duathlon...

Diss Duathlon is organised by tri-anglia, who are also organising the Norwich triathlon later this year.
And, as you all know, the Norwich triathlon is the event we have chosen to decide our own club championship.

Men's captain Steve de Boltz brings his toy box to Diss...
Our men's captain Steve de Boltz has e-mailed tri-anglia to say:

Just a quick note from the red and black of Ipswich Tri Club to say thank you for a great days race at Diss. Having spoken to most of our members after the event, we all enjoyed it, although I think many of us set off a little over dressed. It seemed to be winter when I set off and summer when I finished, was I really that slow.

If you could book sunshine for the Norwich triathlon that would be great. Maybe not quite as hot as last year though.

Please pass on our thanks to all who organised and marshalled at Diss, it was nice to have encouragement out in the wind swept wilds of Norfolk, and the tea and cake afterwards was well appreciated.

Once again thank you, and see you in July.

Ladies captain Helen Farrow, strangely missing from the results, 'fessed up "Diss was not good for me as I miscounted bike laps. Oops."

Diss Duathlon race report - 1st April

A warm and windy day greeted the plethora of Ipswich Triathlon Club members, 13 in total, for what was for most this seasons first foray into competitive action. It was excellent to see so many members congregating at the start lines, all sporting club kit along with many other layers (some more than others Derrick!!).

The start times were in three waves 5 minutes apart, apparently split by age, and early season enthusiasm appeared to send people off for the first 5km run at what can only be described as warp-speed before reality kicked in and normal ‘panting’ service was resumed. The run course was fairly flat and loosened the legs off nicely for the cycling to come.

After the fast first leg, a rapid transition onto the bikes. I decided, after advice from Steve ‘if you see me on the bike then I’ve already taken 5 minutes off you’ De Boltz, that I would try leaving the shoes clipped into the pedals in an attempt to shave valuable nanoseconds of my time. In short, this wasn’t a huge success, and I fear there may be a photo doing the rounds that proves this….(Note to self – work on transition).

Ross Welton tries to shave nanoseconds off transition

Ross starts removing his foot from his shoe in flight - but forgets to leave the shoe clipped to the pedal...

Derrick Smith skewers Strivs Miller at the start

...while an under-dressed Derrick Smith skewers Strivs Miller at the start.

Once the feet, shoes and pedals had met the cycling was immensely enjoyable. The 3 lap circuit was mostly flat, although any incline seemed to be greeted with a fairly fierce headwind and pot-holed farm track combination. There were some long fast straights to flush out the cobwebs and give the new bike, (I may have mentioned to a few people that I have a new bike), a test. I was propelled on by the thought of knowing that Captain Steve, Dave Husband and Tony Birt would all delight in passing me, so pedalling as fast as my ‘chicken legs’ would take me, I completed the 30km bike ride still feeling pretty good and knowing that there was just the final 5km run to go, a repeat of the first leg.

The thought of running 5km is not overly distressing, although, as I’m sure many of the competitors will agree, Duathlons have an ability to make the second run feel like the Marathon des Sables (perhaps a slight exaggeration). With the legs suddenly feeling ‘a little heavy’ it was just a case of running/jogging/plodding/falling to the finish line to complete my first race as an official Ipswich Triathlon Club member.

I think everyone who attended felt that this was an excellent season opener, and the post race atmosphere amongst the red and black clad team, with tea and cakes rapidly in hand, was great to be a part of.

April Fools day also saw the red & black turning out at two longer-distance runs...

Bungay marathon & half-marathon - 1st April
I spotted four members of the club completing the full marathon at Bungay - with at least three of them following elements of the same training schedule, based on the "FIRST" training plan.
The four marathoners for whom we have pictures & comments are Dave Copland, Kate Stannett, Julia Yelloly and Charlie Stannett. Rob Peevor was also out on the course, but running incognito.
Anyway, as Julia put it, it was a grand day out!

Dave Copland sports his special go-faster hair cut... Dave Copland, sporting his special go-faster hair cut, used Bungay as part of his preparation for the Norseman triathlon later this year, which starts in a fjord and finishes with a full marathon. Up a mountain.

This was Dave's first attempt at a marathon - and he smashed quite a few members' personal bests, which probably helps explain his smile despite having some problems toward the end.

Kate Stannett shows a BIG smile... Kate Stannett showed a big smile as she came close - very close - to equally her personal best, set in London a couple of years ago.

Kate suffered a recurrence of an injury at around six miles and rather foolishly carried on but, with help from her physio and some enforced rest, she should be ready for the Flora London Marathon at the end of April as part of her training for IMUK.

...but nothing like Julia Yelloy's massive smile... Adding weight to a suspicion that there were happy pills in the water being dished out, Julia's massive smile gives the game away that she was actually away with the fairies when Kate passed her with just a few miles to go: "I was really in a little world somewhere else then, and [Kate] brought me home!"

Julia did a really good time - which bodes well for the IM70.3 in Antwerp later this year.

...or Charlie Stannett's grimace After completing the first half almost bang on schedule, Charlie Stannett started cramping up and decided to treat the second half as a training shuffle - dropping almost two minutes a mile in the process.

That said he still did his best marathon time in over twenty years - a numerically suspicious 262 minutes - and is looking forward to a cramp-free marathon in London in a couple of weeks time.

Oliver Calver en route to a personal best... The Bungay marathon comprises a two lap course. A half-marathon sets off for just one lap of the same route two hours after the marathon starts - which makes for an interesting mix of banter between the two fields.

At least two members of the club took part in the half-marathon option: Oliver Calvin and Iain Downie.

Along with Dave & Julia, Iain got sun-burn - whereas I gather Oliver (runner 975, left) was well-chuffed with knocking masses off his previous best!

When you remember that Derrick Smith won a similar trophy at the Bungay 20km race, this makes the club championship's "old gits" section start to sound very competitive indeed.

At the prize-giving an announcement was made that it is intended that the Joe Cox event become a half-marathon from 2008.

The Stowmarket Striders website reports:

Quite probably the last ever Joe Cox 10 mile took place on the first day of the British Summer Time. The big field of 217 runners was blessed with fine running conditions, warmer than the last few days. A slight head-wind over the last few miles knocked a few seconds off the times which were slightly down on last year.

Susannah Rosenberg writes:

After swimming at Woolverstone and running round Alton Water on Sunday 18th March, we were relaxing in the café with mugs of tea, cakes and bacon butties, when a cyclist sporting a rather attractive pair of the world famous Ipswich Triathlon cycle shorts pedalled by.  I dashed out of the café and called “Hello Ipswich Tri” at him.  The cyclist waved, and then thought of his personal safety with regard to a scary woman running out of a café and shouting at him – that was the last we saw of him!

Who were you?  Next time, be brave and come and have a cuppa with us.

Club kit

Please remember that club kit is ordered through Heather Collinson by e-mailing kit@ipswich-tri.org or by ringing 01473-620651 - not by e-mailing ITCH. Heather's address is 14 Spindler Close, Kesgrave, Ipswich, IP5 2DA.

Heather is having some trouble putting together a sufficiently large spring order to meet the minimum order requirements we have with our supplier. So, if you are still only thinking about ordering kit - maybe you've spotted that your winter jacket has worn a bit thin in places and might need replacing before the autumn, or maybe you realise that you would have done more winter mileage if only you'd got around to ordering those fantastic club thermal bib tights - please give Heather a call sooner rather than later.

Entry to the junior training event at Framlingham on April 15th is now closed.

Further information has been e-mailed to contacts and is also appearing on the "titch" pages at www.ipswich-tri.org/titch.

With the less formal events you must still let Ady know if you intend coming - he will cancel events rather than waste club resource if not enough people have committed to coming.

Anyone interested in helping at juniors events please contact Ady by e-mailing juniors@ipswich-tri.org or ringing 01379-388855.

Club championship

Do not forget to get your entry in for the club championships – the Norwich triathlon on July 1st - by visiting www.entrycentral.net - and entering direct. We do NOT have any special entry route.

Please - when you are asked to enter your club name, do not enter simply as "Ipswich" - use "Ipswich Triathlon Club"
On last count there were just 38 people entered as "Ipswich triathlon club" members - and the event is now over three-quarters full...

Rules - the final rules for the championships are still to be confirmed (so it's not too late to lobby committee members) but proposals include:

Categories

  • Male: open; vet (BT categories H-I); "super" vet (J+)
  • Female: open; vet (BT categories H-I); "super" vet (J+)

In the case of someone placing (say) 2nd open but 1st vet they should take the higher ranking award i.e. 1st vet.

Only first claim members (with respect to triathlon) are eligible, and club kit should be worn. (So if you are first claim Stowmarket Striders for running events but first claim ITC for triathlon, then you are eligible. But you're not eligible if you are competing as a first claim member of - say - Wimbledon triathlon club.)

Some club news you may have missed...

Final, final reminderhave you renewed your membership? If you've lost your form, download an application form NOW while you think about it. (If you're a senior member you need only print & complete the front of the form. The additional information on the rear of the form will be needed for any junior members. Membership subscriptions continue, in effect, to be subsidised by the events we hold which is why you must undertake to help crew at least one of our events as part of your membership subscription.)

Sue Rule is taking an enforced sabbatical, probably for the whole season, following a skiing accident - which, I gather, left Sue with broken and dislocated bones. As Sue put it with a certain amount of understatement "Its a bit of a bummer, as training was so going well and I'd had no injuries!"
I'm sure we all wish Sue a quick and full recovery, and look forward to her turning out in the red & black next year...

Training...

Forthcoming Saturday morning swimming sessions at Woolverstone - school Easter holidays are upon us which means the current pool availability is:

  • April 7th - NO swimming
  • April 14th - NO SWIMMING (this is a change from the earlier e-mail)
  • April 21st & 28th - swimming as usual (be there for a 9:00am start)
  • May 5th, 12th & 19th - swimming as usual

If you want to be on a ring round list for notification of changes at short notice then let Steve have your number.
Steve is on 07795 564322. Note also that Steve is trying to negotiate use of the pool during the summer holiday period.

And don't forget the club training sessions on Thursdays at 7pm at Greshams, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich -  if you can't make the training, then why not join us for a beer (usually Adnams, occasionally Wherry) or some food from about 8pm onwards.

  • Apr 12th - Hills session on Valley Road.
  • Apr 19th - Fynn Valley run
  • Apr 26th - Intervals in Christchurch Park
  • May 3rd - Fynn Valley/cross country run
(note - if you live way out west & can't get to Ipswich easily, there is always the Newmarket heath race that evening)
  • May 24th - Mini duathlon - see below

Don't forget John Gabriel will be organising some mini training duathlons on some Thursday evenings in the summer. The dates planned are 24th May, 21st June and 19th July. More info to follow nearer the first date.

The ITCH league - click here for full details - remember the league is just for fun and to give you a focus for your training, and to give you a baseline from which to improve next year.  The club championship at Norwich is included in the league.

Suffolk Sunrise Bike Ride - if you're one of those people who cannot get into Waveney on May 13th, have you thought about doing Action Medical Research's "challenge bike ride" through rural Suffolk lanes - with a choice of 100 or 50 mile routes.
If you are, then you might want to e-mail nickcollinson@hotmail.co.uk (or ring Nick on
01473-620651) as he's started sounding out the possibility of a club ride-out.
(
Both routes are circular starting and finishing at Woodbridge passing through Felixstowe, Orford, Dunwich, Framlingham and Debenham.  They are hoping to attract some 300 riders - see www.action.org.uk/takeaction which lists quite a few other events which might be of interest.)

"Tour de Tendring 2007" - if you couldn't get into the Woodbridge 10km on May 20th, go try the Tour de Tendring bike ride instead. "This is not a race" - but it's a really nice opportunity to raise money for the RNLI while riding 20, 50 or 100 miles.  The 100 mile route is twice the 50 mile route; the 20 miler is a shorter route popular with pub teams. (Last year one team had a mobile bar on a support vehicle - honest.)
There is a saving to be had by entering as members of a team rather than as individuals. At the moment I can find nothing on www.tendringdc.gov.uk but if anybody is interested in pulling together a team entry please Iet me know - I have a paper entry form but am doing Woodbridge - or ring the organisers on 01255-686650. About half a dozen of us did the 100 mile option last year.

Have you seen...

  • The Etape Caledonia is being billed as the UK's first-ever timed mass participation cycling event on closed roads. It's on Sunday June 24th around Pitlochry - I seem to recall going to a really nice pub near there - and being promoted buy the same group who put on the London triathlon. The "Challenge" distance is 83 miles, total ascent 2,078m. See http://www.etapecaledonia.co.uk/ for more details.

  • Most people are probably already aware of this, but don't forget that the 2007 Tour de France starts in London this year - prologue around London on July 7th, then Stage 1 London to Canterbury on July 8th.

  • Take the classic "Ironman" distances, convert them to metric, and add them together. What do you get?
    Swim 3.8k (2.4m) Bike 180k (112m) Run 42.2k (26.2m) = 226km
which is the thinking behind www.k226.com - an alternative set of races around the world, including the "Norse Xtreme" in August, from which I am hoping to hear how our Mr Copland beats Richard (Fuller, East Essex) by miles and miles. Or should that be kilometres and kilometres...
