April Fools day saw the red & black of Ipswich turning out in force for the Diss Duathlon...

Diss Duathlon is organised by tri-anglia, who are also organising the Norwich triathlon later this year.
And, as you all know, the Norwich triathlon is the event we have chosen to decide our own club championship.

Our men's captain Steve de Boltz has e-mailed tri-anglia to say:

Just a quick note from the red and black of Ipswich Tri Club to say thank you for a great days race at Diss. Having spoken to most of our members after the event, we all enjoyed it, although I think many of us set off a little over dressed. It seemed to be winter when I set off and summer when I finished, was I really that slow.

If you could book sunshine for the Norwich triathlon that would be great. Maybe not quite as hot as last year though.

Please pass on our thanks to all who organised and marshalled at Diss, it was nice to have encouragement out in the wind swept wilds of Norfolk, and the tea and cake afterwards was well appreciated.

Once again thank you, and see you in July.

Ladies captain Helen Farrow, strangely missing from the results, 'fessed up "Diss was not good for me as I miscounted bike laps. Oops."

Diss Duathlon race report - 1st April

A warm and windy day greeted the plethora of Ipswich Triathlon Club members, 13 in total, for what was for most this seasons first foray into competitive action. It was excellent to see so many members congregating at the start lines, all sporting club kit along with many other layers (some more than others Derrick!!).

The start times were in three waves 5 minutes apart, apparently split by age, and early season enthusiasm appeared to send people off for the first 5km run at what can only be described as warp-speed before reality kicked in and normal ‘panting’ service was resumed. The run course was fairly flat and loosened the legs off nicely for the cycling to come.

After the fast first leg, a rapid transition onto the bikes. I decided, after advice from Steve ‘if you see me on the bike then I’ve already taken 5 minutes off you’ De Boltz, that I would try leaving the shoes clipped into the pedals in an attempt to shave valuable nanoseconds of my time. In short, this wasn’t a huge success, and I fear there may be a photo doing the rounds that proves this….(Note to self – work on transition).

...while an under-dressed Derrick Smith skewers Strivs Miller at the start.

Once the feet, shoes and pedals had met the cycling was immensely enjoyable. The 3 lap circuit was mostly flat, although any incline seemed to be greeted with a fairly fierce headwind and pot-holed farm track combination. There were some long fast straights to flush out the cobwebs and give the new bike, (I may have mentioned to a few people that I have a new bike), a test. I was propelled on by the thought of knowing that Captain Steve, Dave Husband and Tony Birt would all delight in passing me, so pedalling as fast as my ‘chicken legs’ would take me, I completed the 30km bike ride still feeling pretty good and knowing that there was just the final 5km run to go, a repeat of the first leg.

The thought of running 5km is not overly distressing, although, as I’m sure many of the competitors will agree, Duathlons have an ability to make the second run feel like the Marathon des Sables (perhaps a slight exaggeration). With the legs suddenly feeling ‘a little heavy’ it was just a case of running/jogging/plodding/falling to the finish line to complete my first race as an official Ipswich Triathlon Club member.

I think everyone who attended felt that this was an excellent season opener, and the post race atmosphere amongst the red and black clad team, with tea and cakes rapidly in hand, was great to be a part of.

April Fools day also saw the red & black turning out at two longer-distance runs...

Bungay marathon & half-marathon - 1st April
I spotted four members of the club completing the full marathon at Bungay - with at least three of them following elements of the same training schedule, based on the "FIRST" training plan.
The four marathoners for whom we have pictures & comments are Dave Copland, Kate Stannett, Julia Yelloly and Charlie Stannett. Rob Peevor was also out on the course, but running incognito.
Anyway, as Julia put it, it was a grand day out!

Dave Copland sports his special go-faster hair cut... Dave Copland, sporting his special go-faster hair cut, used Bungay as part of his preparation for the Norseman triathlon later this year, which starts in a fjord and finishes with a full marathon. Up a mountain.

This was Dave's first attempt at a marathon - and he smashed quite a few members' personal bests, which probably helps explain his smile despite having some problems toward the end.

Kate Stannett shows a BIG smile... Kate Stannett showed a big smile as she came close - very close - to equally her personal best, set in London a couple of years ago.

Kate suffered a recurrence of an injury at around six miles and rather foolishly carried on but, with help from her physio and some enforced rest, she should be ready for the Flora London Marathon at the end of April as part of her training for IMUK.

...but nothing like Julia Yelloy's massive smile... Adding weight to a suspicion that there were happy pills in the water being dished out, Julia's massive smile gives the game away that she was actually away with the fairies when Kate passed her with just a few miles to go: "I was really in a little world somewhere else then, and [Kate] brought me home!"

Julia did a really good time - which bodes well for the IM70.3 in Antwerp later this year.

...or Charlie Stannett's grimace After completing the first half almost bang on schedule, Charlie Stannett started cramping up and decided to treat the second half as a training shuffle - dropping almost two minutes a mile in the process.

That said he still did his best marathon time in over twenty years - a numerically suspicious 262 minutes - and is looking forward to a cramp-free marathon in London in a couple of weeks time.

Oliver Calver en route to a personal best... The Bungay marathon comprises a two lap course. A half-marathon sets off for just one lap of the same route two hours after the marathon starts - which makes for an interesting mix of banter between the two fields.

At least two members of the club took part in the half-marathon option: Oliver Calvin and Iain Downie.

Along with Dave & Julia, Iain got sun-burn - whereas I gather Oliver (runner 975, left) was well-chuffed with knocking masses off his previous best!

Sue Hargadon will now be gunning for Stannett... Sue Hargadon has one of our Flora London Marathon club places, and chose the "Bedford 20" for her one of her longer training runs:

No report from Will but congratulations on winning the Vet 50 class while doing a bit of speed work in the build up to IMUK.

When you remember that Derrick Smith won a similar trophy at the Bungay 20km race, this makes the club championship's "old gits" section start to sound very competitive indeed.

At the prize-giving an announcement was made that it is intended that the Joe Cox event become a half-marathon from 2008.

The Stowmarket Striders website reports:

Quite probably the last ever Joe Cox 10 mile took place on the first day of the British Summer Time. The big field of 217 runners was blessed with fine running conditions, warmer than the last few days. A slight head-wind over the last few miles knocked a few seconds off the times which were slightly down on last year.

Susannah Rosenberg writes:

After swimming at Woolverstone and running round Alton Water on Sunday 18th March, we were relaxing in the café with mugs of tea, cakes and bacon butties, when a cyclist sporting a rather attractive pair of the world famous Ipswich Triathlon cycle shorts pedalled by.  I dashed out of the café and called “Hello Ipswich Tri” at him.  The cyclist waved, and then thought of his personal safety with regard to a scary woman running out of a café and shouting at him – that was the last we saw of him!

Who were you?  Next time, be brave and come and have a cuppa with us.

Club kit

Please remember that club kit is ordered through Heather Collinson by e-mailing kit@ipswich-tri.org or by ringing 01473-620651 - not by e-mailing ITCH. Heather's address is 14 Spindler Close, Kesgrave, Ipswich, IP5 2DA.

Heather is having some trouble putting together a sufficiently large spring order to meet the minimum order requirements we have with our supplier. So, if you are still only thinking about ordering kit - maybe you've spotted that your winter jacket has worn a bit thin in places and might need replacing before the autumn, or maybe you realise that you would have done more winter mileage if only you'd got around to ordering those fantastic club thermal bib tights - please give Heather a call sooner rather than later.
