ITCH July 2007

Welcome to ITCH - the Ipswich triathlon club hand-out - for July 2007...

Contributors this month include: Steve dB, John Gabriel, Mary Lumkin (photographs), Brian McGeeney, Wendy Quantrill, Kate Stannett & Julia Yelloly.

We have the special bike-training session.

But, most importantly, we still need more volunteers - especially for the duathlon.  John Gabriel writes below how this may yet have to be cancelled if not enough people put their hand up.

I will try and get the August issue out as soon as possible after the London/Antwerp distractions - deadline for any other reports midnight Sunday 5th August.

July - our club championships

As you all know, the Ipswich triathlon club championships were decided on Sunday 1st July, by members' performances in the Norwich triathlon.

The winners of the club championships are:

  • Male – Dave Copland

  • Male vet – Mark Bowditch *

  • Male super vet – Derrick Smith

  • Female – Sam Fulcher *

  • Female vet – Julia Yelloly

  • Female super vet – Maria Reynolds *

Congratulations to all.

As well as our club champions (where age groups were merged), we also had strong performances right across the Norwich competition itself including Laura Williams and Mike Stollery (pictured right) who both brought home the bling for winning their categories.

Just look at the table below and see how many people were in the top three of their individual BT categories.

The times extracted below ignore T1 & T2.

Our men's captain Steve de Boltz reflects on Norwich & our club championship

I’m writing this whilst still aching from a fun days racing at Norwich, and as yet still do not know who won the various competitions in our club championships. So in general well done to all those that took part and made the effort in the rather inclement weather, although how the organisers managed to stop the rain 10 minutes before the start is amazing (they must have a hotline to him upstairs). Commiserations must go to those that had punctures as the rain had washed many small particles of flint into the road. Particular mention should go to Anthony Birt who in his effort not to get in the way of a faster rider overtaking him rode through a puddle and managed to find a pothole which punctured his tyre and I believe damaged his wheel, unlucky mate, there’s always next year. Also Mark Herd who managed not one but three punctures and rode the last couple of miles on a flat rear tyre, never say die well done Mark.  Personally my race went ok. The swim was manic, the bike was wet and windy and the run was my usual nightmare. Well done Ross you’ve done me at Norwich, now let’s bring on the BIG race at London. 1 minute 56 seconds is not a comfort zone is it mate. Norwich is turning into a good quality race with good facilities and a great course. Each year they are trying to make it bigger and better and it certainly seems to be working. I shall thank the organisers on behalf of the club for a well organised quality race. And tell them we look forward to next year. [see below]

The previous week saw a few of us die hards take on the inaugural Wattisham Airfield Triathlon which again was rain soaked until the race start and then turned out fine.

The field was made up of mainly military personnel who were dipping their toes in triathlon for the first time. It was a great race with a 300 metre swim in the air base 25m pool starting at 30 second intervals then onto a 14.3km off-road bike course which was quite technical due to the differing terrain, at one point we road most of the main runway with the wind behind and you could fly along ( get it, fly/runway ha ha). The run was hard work but luckily not too far (4.5km ish) James Boutell had put a team together, they called themselves ‘Eat our dust dB’ well I’d like to point out they didn’t, in fact they ate mine by nearly five minutes, of which Claire clocked the same time as me in the swim, Becky beat me in the run, which means Bou lost it all on the bike. Oh and did I mention I fell off as well. Thanks and congratulations must go to Lee Bark who organised the event. Next year he is talking about moving the event to possibly mid April and making it a road bike course all still within the base which should be good, he would appreciate any feedback from those that took part.

Well done to those that have raced at various distances over the last month, the red and black is turning out all over the country. I’d like to wish good luck to Dave Copland in his bog snorkelling triathlon, how you train for that one is a mystery. Also good luck to those going to Antwerp and those of us fools doing London again. Some of us are staying in London on the Sunday night for a post race beer, if anyone else wants to join us get in touch. To you if you’re racing soon, Have a good one.

And remember Derrick - ‘EYE OF THE TIGER’.

Steve reflected the views of many in the letter of thanks he sent to Tri Anglia:

On behalf of Ipswich Triathlon Club, I would like to congratulate you all for putting on a great race at the Norwich Triathlon. The feedback I have received has been nothing but positive and all those that raced on behalf of our club will be signing up for next year's event. How you managed to book the weather to clear at 7:50am is amazing (you have some powerful witch doctors in Norwich).

Thank you again for allowing us to use the event for our club championships, the general consensus is that it was a very good idea and hopefully we will repeat it next year. I believe we had around 34 club members racing which we should increase next year.

Please pass on our appreciation to all those involved with making it a great day. Such a large event must take an awful lot of planning and organisation. Thanks to all those who marshalled and a fantastic results service with quality time keeping.

The event is growing year by year and is surely the premier race in East Anglia. If you have any feedback for us then please let me know.

Once again thank you. And well done to Tri Anglia.

Tri Anglia's Darren Powell has replied:

Steve, many thanks for your positive feedback with regards to The Norwich Olympic Triathlon.

The event had its largest number of competitors this year and I, like yourself was impressed by the level of professionalism the organising team brought to the event. I think the way they managed to give the impression that it was going to be a very wet race, and then proceeded to ensure perfect racing conditions was particularly well organised.

I have passed your note onto the team along with others we have received - at least they can glow with pride for a couple of months before commencing the planning for next year!!

If you or your members feel there is anyway in which we could improve the race then I would be glad of any comments.

Once again many thanks for taking the time to drop me a line.

Regards

Well done to Lauren Clipstone - a future ladies' captain?
Well done to Lauren Clipstone - a future ladies' captain?

After a gap of some months, we have a new ladies' captain in Kate Stannett.

Hello.  Can I start by welcoming everybody young & old who has joined the club in the last few months - I'm sorry there hadn't been a ladies' captain to greet you. But now, with the season in full swing, I am here to help where I can. Better late than never?

As many of you know I have run the gamut of triathlon from Super Sprint to Ironman since first competing as a novice some eleven years ago.  So, if I can help any newbies with anything, please contact me and I will do what I can.  I can remember how I felt when I did my first tri as if it were yesterday.

And talking of feeling "new" -  while our seniors were competing in Norwich on 1st July, some of our Tristar juniors were busy racing in Cambridge.

My congratulations to Tristars Eleanor Wright and Charlotte Wickens for their performances in the Rob Mclean Junior triathlon in Cambridge, and especially to Lauren Clipstone who came 5th in the Tristar 3 category.

Well done Eleanor, Charlotte & Lauren!

Thanks to John Gabriel for sending in the times. Full results are available from the Cambridge triathlon club website - see http://www.cambridgetriathlonclub.co.uk/races.asp - where you can also find duathlon and senior triathlon results.

Blenheim - Saturday 2nd June & Sunday 3rd June

June 2nd was the women's event and June 3rd was the men's. I didn't realize there were so many women doing triathlons. In my wave there were about 200 and there were about six waves that day (same next day with the men).

Everything was organized really well with a huge transition area in the courtyard. It's hard to find your bike in the 1000s of others though. The women next to me suggested I use the statue of Neptune, opposite, to locate my bike - v. useful!

This was my first open water event. What a lake! It was quite clear and not too cold. There was a bit of a run to transition. The waves were 15 minutes apart which meant that the bike course was a bit crowded at times with 3 waves on the one route (with three laps of the route). The run route was lovely, round the lake and not busy. It was a privilege (that we paid for!) being in such a beautiful place.

Iain (Downie) was the second out of the water and 16th swimmer overall. We saw Dan at the start and I recognized him on the bike route and got this photo (see left).

We also saw someone else with an Ipswich top and looked him up in the results - Matthew Wix - Spencer's brother? We saw Spencer in the results though not in person, beating Iain by 1 second again (he did this in Warwick last Sept too)!

Mike Stollery also did the race and had a good one though we didn't see him there.

The full results are on the Blenheim wesbite at http://blenheim.triathlonresults.co.uk/ but here are the people that Julia mentioned.

Strong performance by Ipswich ladies in Ironman 70.3, Wimbleball (Exmoor) - Sunday 17th June

Five members of Ipswich triathlon club took part in the 2007 UK Ironman 70.3 triathlon held in Wimbleball, Exmoor, on Sunday 17th June.

Sometimes referred to as a “half-Ironman”, the Ironman 70.3 comprised a 1.2 mile swim in Wimbleball lake, followed by a 56 mile ride around the "vicious" hills of Exmoor, before concluding with a 13.1 mile multi-terrain half-marathon in the grounds of the lake.  The UK event is one of around a dozen around the world which are used as qualifiers for the Ironman 70.3 world championships, and is regarded as the toughest of the lot. Why is it called "Ironman 70.3"? Well, try adding the numbers 1.2, 56, and 13.1...

First Ipswich member home was Brian McGeeney, who was taking part in his first event at this distance. Brian had suffered a fall at about 54 miles when he'd been out for a practice ride - I've seen the wounds - but on the day he decided to stay on his bike for the full distance.  Brian finished 135th in the M35-39 (male age 35–39) category, with a very creditable time of 6hrs 47mins.

...while Kate Stannett grows an extra head and arms to come third in hers

Kate Stannett was next Ipswich member home, with a personal best of 7hrs 06mins, which gave Kate her first podium finish in these events. She came third in the F45-49 category but lost out on world championship qualification by just one slot.

Supervet Grayhame Fish was our next member home with 7hrs 36mins, which gave him 5th in the M55-59.

But just two minutes behind Grayhame was Anne Fish, whose 7hrs 38mins gained her second place in her category. Unfortunately, like Kate, Anne also missed out from world championship qualification by just one slot.

Last club member to finish was Charlie Stannett. Charlie vaguely collapsed in the transition area between the swim and cycle but after recovering went on to complete the race on tick-over to perfect his Polo distribution technique, albeit in a bum-numbing 8hrs 22mins.

Website for fuller results: http://half.ironmanuk.com - and watch out for the IM70.3 in Antwerp, where we also have a bunch of club members competing. (If you are competing, can you make sure you've contacted Nick Collinson, who has been coordinating our invasion.)

Wattisham triathlon - Saturday 23rd June

The first Wattisham Triathlon turned out to be an event to remember. With forecasts of torrential rain it looked like it was going to be a seriously wet day, and the race briefing was moved indoors after the heavens opened. Fortunately the shower was short, and whilst wet underfoot, the majority of the race missed the heavy rain.

The 300m pool swim was conducted on an under the ropes course, with some high speed swims from Ipswich entrants. We had been warned about the off road bike course in the race briefing, being told the first section would be on loose gravel, and “if it looks like a 90o turn ahead, it probably is”. As a result there were a number of dismounts featured in the first section, including Mens Captain Steve De Boltz, who managed a full body roll yet remounted to record the fastest bike split of the day. The bike course finished with a section on the runway, where the pace increased significantly.

The run course was again flat, with the final section returning on the runway to cross under a finish tape suspended between 2 military cranes, ending a tunnel  lined with attack helicopters – the most impressive finish line I’ve ever crossed.

Impressive results were achieved by all participants, but particularly Amanda and Maria who won their age groups, and Steve who managed 10th position overall. In the team event Claire, Buey and Becks just missed breaking the hour time, and both of the girls were virgin triathletes.

Lee is keen to run the event again next year, and has asked participants for their opinion on turning the event into a 400m/20km/5km sprint, with an on road bike course held in April. This could be a great season opener – on possibly the fastest course in the country (you don’t get much flatter than a runway).

Thanks to club members who turned out to support, including Ross, Iain and Julia. Some photos from the event can be found at http://photos.yahoo.com/brian.mcgeeney@btinternet.com in the album labelled 2007- Wattisham Supersprint – Thanks to Mary for bringing a camera.

Harwich sprint triathlon - Sunday 24th June

June 24th saw me take part in my first triathlon – the Harwich Sprint.

Bit of background...I’ve been a club runner for three years but have been plagued with shin tendonitis for 18 months (getting excuses in early!) so each pain-free run is a bonus! I was a regular cycling commuter at school and university but had never ridden a road bike until 2006. I love my road bike and my mountain bike has been relegated to towing my four year old daughter’s ‘tag along’.

Swimming… could manage a few lengths of slow breast stroke. Realising I’d need to improve on this I signed up to some one-to-one lessons at Next Gen and managed to learn front crawl and I gradually built up to be able to do 300m non-stop.

On the day…. Felt totally sick with nerves from the minute I woke up. I knew I could do the bike and run but the thought of the swim was bringing me out in a cold sweat.

Arrived in good time, racked up and had my number drawn on my arm (felt like pro at that point). Walking out into the pool area to see about 30 people lined up next to the pool in various lycra/speedo/underwear/tri suit combinations was surreal. Especially as there was an audience in the seats above! The slower swimmers started first which was good – having to watch speedy swimmers would have made me even more nervous.

Eventually it was my turn and I set off and managed front crawl for all 12 lengths. I could see my husband in the next lane as the ‘Ipswich’ on his shorts kept flashing past me. Ducking under the ropes at the end of the lanes was something I wish I’d practised as I was pretty slow at it.

Exiting the pool felt good and it was only a short jog to transition where of course I flapped about where my bike was! Got my stuff together and was only slightly put off by the Stannetts having a giggle over Charlie’s ‘talcing’ by the competitor next to him!

Got on bike and set off. First few minutes were weird – I felt like I’d forgotten something - very odd to be dripping wet on a bike! Bike was fun but windy. One of the highlights was zooming down hill towards roundabout where a lovely policeman had stopped the traffic for us letting us carry on in front of the waiting cars.

Back into transition and pulled socks and trainers on. Headed off across soggy field and thought ‘I can’t do this – it’s too hard’. Once on the concrete of the sea wall I recovered a little and managed to really enjoy the run. I could probably have gone a little quicker but I was just enjoying myself thinking I was about to complete my first triathlon!

Crossed the line in 1:27:30 - which was under my target - with huge smile on my face. We stayed for the hog roast and awards presentation which was really lovely and picked up our certificates from the organisers.

My final times were 300m swim - 7:16, 24k bike - 54:21, 5k run - 25:26 and I was very chuffed to find out later that I was third in my age group and 13th lady out of 38.

Big thank you to Harwich Runners and Swimming Club for great organisation and marshalling – and to Ditte my swimming coach!

Can’t wait to do it all again and am on the waiting list for Waveney 2. Cross your fingers for me!

Ipswich triathlon club members did well at Harwich, which is one of the sprints featured in the ITCH league.

TAG Rugby Evening & Clubmark evening – Thursday 5th July

The club receives its Clubmark - photo courtesy Adam Keer.

Ipswich triathlon club was presented with its "Clubmark" on Thursday 5th July at Greshams.  The evening included recognition of our senior champions and also some training for our juniors.

As a change from the normal senior training, eight brave triathletes battled against the elements to try their hands at TAG Rugby in a session arranged by John Gabriel (the more mature member kneeling in the picture above). Pouring rain and a pitch which was about as far away from the clubhouse as possible didn't deter the athletes as they did a few skill routines with a rugby ball (some remembering their school days!) then donned the TAG belts for a quick explanation on the rules followed by a game.

The yellow team took an early lead and soon built up a 6-0 lead until coach Gabriel cunningly changed the teams to ensure he ended up on the winning side. A flourish from the blue team with two quick tries was not enough and yellows ran out comfortable winners, also winning the race to the clubhouse and the bar!

The yellow team was represented by Iain Downie, Ross Welton, Derrick Smith and Jason Baillie and the blue team by Isabel Smith, Michelle Constable, Tom Willmot, Simon Palmer & John Gabriel.

Well done to all, thanks for supporting and if we repeat it again I hope we'll get a dry evening (& a few more takers).

2007 EVENT VOLUNTEERING - THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT

Culford Triathlon 29 July

Dave Copland has e-mailed all the volunteers on his list. Please confirm with him that you have received his e-mail, and that you are clear when and where you are on duty.  I know that Dave has had to allocate more than one job to some volunteers because, frankly, the event is still currently under-staffed.

Whilst Dave has 15 volunteers for the pre-event set-up,  Dave needs approximately 46 volunteers on race day itself and, at last count, only had half that number.  We know that the authorities are being more stringent about safety issues such as road signs so we needs lots more people to volunteer for the race day duties if this event is to continue to be run successfully. Contact Dave on culford@ipswich-tri.org or 01473-250713 now to offer your help.

Ipswich Junior Triathlon 26 August  - contact Simon Palmer at simon.palmer@talk21.com to volunteer.

Ipswich Duathlon 23 September - possible CANCELLATION - by John Gabriel

In the last issue of ITCH it was reported that we needed many more people to come forward as volunteers for the club organised races in 2007. Since then I have discovered that at least 3 of the people on the volunteers list for the Ipswich Duathlon are also down to race and only 1 other has offered her services as a volunteer.

Put quite simply this race cannot be staged unless we have the required amount of volunteers and we need over 30 to ensure this race takes place. As Race Director I will be reviewing this at regular intervals and if we don't have enough volunteers before the end of August I will suggest to the committee that the event be CANCELLED which will not only rob athletes of a race but also reduce the ability of the club to financially support other club activities.

So the choice is yours, stand up and be counted, volunteer at duathlon@ipswich-tri.org

Club kit

Please remember that club kit is ordered through my mum Heather by e-mailing kit@ipswich-tri.org or by ringing 01473-620651 - not by e-mailing ITCH. Our address is 14 Spindler Close, Kesgrave, Ipswich, IP5 2DA.

Heather sometimes has trouble putting together a sufficiently large order to meet the minimum order requirements we have with our supplier so, if you are still only thinking about ordering kit, please give Heather a call sooner rather than later.

Training...

Saturday morning swimming sessions for the summer & autumn

  • July 21st (see below for complementary bike session later that same morning)
Note - some of the regulars are planning a timed 1500m session in lieu of their usual drill sessions.
  • August 11th & 25th
  • September 8th, 15th, 22nd (Sept 29th still to be confirmed)
  • October 13th, 20th & 27th (note - there is NO session on October 6th)
  • November 10th, 17th, 24th (November 3rd still to be confirmed)
  • December 1st, 8th & 15th.

The sessions are still at the girls school in Woolverstone & cost £4. Be there ready in time to get changed so you can get wet at 9:00am. The pool session guillotines at 10:00.  If you want to be on a ring round list for notification of changes at short notice then let Steve dB have your number. Steve is on 07795 564322.

Bike training special – July 21st at Foxhall Road (IBC members will be familiar with this). John Gabriel has arranged this session by special request. It will cost you £2 and you need to be there for 11.30 am prompt, there being Foxhall Stadium, entrance off Foxhall Road. You will need your bike, kit and helmet (no helmet, no ride). Activities will be general track cycling, riding in groups, speed, sprints etc all on slightly banked concrete circuit, road bikes essential.

Thursday evening club training sessions at Greshams, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich -  there are changing facilities and showers at Greshams. Come in time to change and be ready for a 7:00pm start. If you can't make the training, then why not join us for a beer or some food from about 8pm onwards.  (This is often a "bling fest" - the ideal time to show off any medals you've just acquired!)

  • July 19th - Fynn Valley run

  • July 26th - Turbo/run session

  • August 2nd - four mile road run

  • August 9th - drill session on playing field

For the turbo/run session, bring your bike (& turbo if you have one. If you don't have a turbo, contact Steve dB to borrow a club turbo).

Open water swimming - Dave Copland, Steve dB and others often go to the Gosfield open water swimming sessions on Tuesday evenings between 1830 - 2030. [Click here for last leaflet we had].
Steve tells me "a few of us go and it’s a good open water swim session. They’ve now marked out a 1500m course and last week there were 52 swimmers, we did a mass start, once you complete 1500m you can go round again if you want. It’s possible to get two hours swimming in at this time of year, which is great for you Ironman nutters."
So - worth letting Steve know if you're interested in these as there have been some car-sharing opportunities.

Triathlon England Eastern Region Age-Group Camp, Sunday 19th August - the deadline for applying for places on the age-group camp has been extended ... to 18th July.  I know that application forms were sent out to an extensive mailing list with a number of names I recognised so I am assuming that if you were interested in this event - to be held at Woolverstone - you've already contacted Ceri but I've asked Steve dB and Dave Copland if they could take a copy or two of the form to Greshams.

Triathlon England Eastern Region Age-Group Camp, Sunday 19th August

A training day specifically for age-group athletes with a particular emphasis on final preparations for the Age-Group World Championships in Hamburg.  The day will consist of both practical training sessions and theory sessions:

  • Swim pacing strategies and tactics

  • Swim-Bike brick

  • Transitions and run pacing

  • Aerodynamic bike positioning

  • Race course familiarisation, tapering, and race day nutrition

Sessions led by British Triathlon World Class Coach, Dave Parry, price £40.

For further details or to book a place please contact Ceri Winter, Eastern Region Development Officer (ceriwinter@britishtriathlon.org  07834 542087) by [had been Tuesday 19th June, now 18th July].

The ITCH league - click here for fuller details - remember the league is just for fun and to give you a focus for your training, and to give you a baseline from which to improve next year.  The club championship at Norwich is included in the league.

Ipswich Bike Club training - Adam Keer of Ipswich Bike Club is very keen for all junior members of ITC to come along to the IBC sessions at Foxhall stadium on occasional Saturday mornings. IBC is a member of the Go-Ride scheme that offer coaching specifically aimed at juniors, although adults are welcome on the track session - and see the club special on July 21st.

If you would like further information contact Adrian Green on 01379388855 or e-mail juniors@ipswich-tri.org or contact Adam directly via e-mail adam.keer@ipswich.gov.uk - I have also put the calendar on to www.ipswich-tri.org/titch

Other stuff...

  • Congratulations to Dave Copland for his recent world record - I hope to carry Dave's full report with pictures next month.

  • Congratulations also to Sue Hargadon who came third in her age group in the recent Friday Five series. The series winners are decided by their best four performances over a series of five five mile runs. Sue had been so strong over the first four she didn't need to compete in the final event!
(Sue, watch out for Susannah. I've seen the statistical extrapolation of her Bury times which shows when she'll be wiping the floor with all of us!)

On August 4th & 5th watch out for TV and web coverage of two events that are involving a lot of club members.

  • For the London triathlon, William Catchpole has managed to pull together two semi-attached relay teams for the Saturday, one of which features Sarah Miller's new running coach David.
But, as Steve dB says earlier, loads of people will be there on the Sunday for the standard ("Olympic") events.
Even if you're not competing, the Sunday is a good day out - and it sounds as if Steve will be buying the beers on the Sunday evening.

  • Further afield, Nick Collinson has cajouled a number of people into following him over to Belgium for the Antwerp IM70.3 qualifier, also on August 5th (worth checking www.ironmanlive.com for that one).
To remind you, "Charlie's Challenge" is still there from January:

"I am personally pledging £70-30 to the club member who does best in their age group at the 2007 Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3, provided they cross the finish line in club kit and beat my time. Which, given that I finished in 7:33:18, should be very easy. Very easy indeed."

"The hard bit will be doing sufficiently well at Antwerp or Wimbleball to qualify... go for it!"

Anne & Kate both came within one place of qualifying at Wimbleball, so over to you...

  • the 2008 Ironman Austria sold out in just 19 hours. The following is a personal invitation:

Given how IM Austria 2008 sold out in 19 hours, I'm thinking we ought to try planning ahead a bit more - East Essex have managed to get 12 people in but I know they'd already been planning accommodation for 2008 weeks ago!

Now, I am of a mind to try IM Switzerland at least once. Purely because its website is named after me.
Who would be interested in Switzerland in, say, 2009? That is far enough away for first-timers to plan a campaign including an IM70.3 in 2008 and maybe the odd Hell of the East.
    Or IM Germany 2009?

And, who knows, there might be an interesting if bizarre IM-distance (but without the tight time cut-offs) event nearer to home early 2008…

Anyway, no "lurkers" but if you're interested, let me know and I'll start a mailing list.

  • More generally - a couple of people have already asked me whether anybody is doing a European Ironman in 2008.  I know of two members who were able to register for Austria, and I've heard of one or two others who've registered for Switzerland which is on the same weekend.
Are you "going long"? Let me know.  I've started off mailing lists in previous years which proved useful in the days before blogs for sharing/airing schedules, fears, logistical planning and general sarcasm.

  • If you're on the London mailing lists you'll already know but - a venue with a difference! - there is a 10km running race at Bluewater on Sunday 12th August - see www.SheRunsHeRuns.co.uk
