ITCH June 2008

Welcome to ITCH - the Ipswich triathlon club hand-out - for June 2008...

This month's main feature is a "June-ior special" but, first, two reminders

1. Norwich triathlon is next week.

This is the race we've adopted for our club championship.

Already shown as entered for Ipswich triathlon club: Greg Allen, Jason Baillie, Nik Bestow, Antony Birt, Mark Bowditch, Jackie Chubb, Heather Collinson, Dave Copland, Iain Downie, Matt Dye, Joseph Goddard, Julia Green, Mark Hird, Amanda Mallett, Brian McGeeney, Mark Newman, Simon Palmer, Robert Peevor, Clive Quantrill, Wendy Quantrill, Adam Ramsey, Charlie Stannett, Kate Stannett, Mike Stollery, Nick Stonehouse, John Wankowski, Graham White, Julia Yelloly.

Also spotted but shown as "unattached" - Jason Battle, Lucy Bowditch, Sue Rule.

There were still slots available when I checked today - 28th June - but tomorrow is the closing date so ACT NOW.

2. If you are thinking of doing an Ironman next year, 2009, you need to be making some decisions now.

A lot of the official Ironman races have been filling up within days and, in some case, within hours of entries opening - and entries for 2009 normally open the same day as the 2008 race. In the case of Germany, they are taking registrations for 2009 already, ahead of the 2008 race.  I have compiled a list of dates and interested parties which you'll find just after the Captains' Corner.

But, now, over to our development officer Adrian Green...

Junior training day - 10th May - Adrian Green

The first Ipswich Junior Triathlon Club Training day took place at Woodbridge School on 10th of May, with nine young members of the club.

First off we started with a Swim session concentrating on technique coached by Isabel Smith. The weather was very good but the outdoor pool at Woodbridge was a little cold for some of the younger children who had an early exit. We had a short break and then moved on to a cycle skills session to practice mounting and dismounting for quick transition and I can tell you that the children became very good at it. These nine 8-13 year olds can mount and dismount a bike better now than the majority of adults who did the Waveney Tri the following day. Nigel Dadge of Felixstome Running Club then took an excellent running session using the hills of the school grounds to maximuum effect. After a break to rest out of the sun the day finished off with a mini event. The children did a run-bike-run format around the undulating grounds of the school to put their new found skills into action.

The day was enjoyed by all and my thanks to Isabel, Nigel and Stuart the Lifeguard, parents and junior athletes who made the day so good.

Future training days with be on Sunday 22nd of June and Sunday 20th of July from 9am to 1pm at Woodbridge School.  We may also try and organise some other events at lower cost venues like Eyke or Stradbroke if we see a demand from a "core" of people.

Further information can be obtained on the series of training events or junior races by contacting Adrian Green, the clubs Development Officer on 01379 388855 or e-mail: juniors@ipswich-tri.org.

STOP PRESS

As ITCH was going to press, a load of photos of the June 22 training day arrived which should go on to www.ipswich-tri.org/titch later this week. Meanwhile we've been told there will be a two page spread on Ipswich Tri Club Juniors and the recent training day in the Evening Star, Monday 30th June, as part of a Grass roots sport feature.

Woodbridge fun run - 18th May - Sarah "Strivs" Miller

"Miller - the Next Generation"

Whilst dad David was busy seeing off the opposition in the adult race, his two youngest children - both members of Ipswich triathlon club - were competing in the junior race (chaperoned by me - step-mum Sarah).

The Miller approach to nutrition...
The Miller approach to nutrition...
It was a packed field and there was a lot of jostling for position on the school playing field, and we all set off at quite a pace.  Nicky, aged seven, decided to wait every so often for me to catch him up even though I urged him to keep going!  He finished 11th in his age group in a time of 8:23!

Becky, aged nine, had a more mature race plan & ran a very consistent pace to finish just behind her brother in 8:30.  This tactic paid off and she finished 3rd in her age group, and she was thrilled to be presented with her medal by the mayor of Woodbridge!

Well done to them both.

Looking through the results there was one other ITC junior in the race: well done also to Ruth Mallett who was 9th in her age group!

Club coaching developments - Adrian Green

Congratulations to Julia Green has passed her Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Triathlon. Julia will begin coaching juniors at Woodbridge School on the junior club training day on 22nd of June.

Congratulations also go to Julia for winning her age group at the Waveney Triathlon.

If any seniors are interested in improving their transitions and would like a coached session (possibly with juniors so they can show you how its done!!!) then please contact Adrian Green.

And finally anybody who is interested in coaching juniors or seniors please contact Adrian Green on juniors@ipswich-tri.org - we have some interest already and Adrian is looking for courses for those people.

Triathlon England Eastern Region - North Norfolk junior triathlon.

Triathlon England Eastern Region are once again running a children’s Race Series.  The series is open to any member of an Eastern Region affiliated club - such as Ipswich triathlon club - who enters races under their Eastern Region Club Name (if running under a sponsors name then it is necessary to ensure the Eastern Region Club is also included in the results).

The number of qualifying events differs according to age group but plenty of events are available, all details can be found at the region’s website, www.triathlonenglandeast.org or, more specifically, at http://www.triathlonenglandeast.org/children.htm .

One such event was the North Norfolk junior triathlon, held on June 14th. Adrian writes: "Well done to Issie Wickens on winning her age group; good results for Charlotte and Lauren as well."

Full results - and dates of other events in the Norfolk/Suffolk junior championship - from http://www.tri-a-sport.co.uk/events.php

Leiston Swimming Club

A number of our junior members are already members of Leiston; Adrian Green and Leiston's Matt Dye are discussing ways of further developing on this relationship. Meanwhile Matt Dye writes:

We warmly offer an open invite to anyone interested in watching or hopefully participating in a FREE taster session, come & see one or more of our sessions on any Sunday (arrive 15mins before session time on the terrace) and speak to us about joining in.

Session guide, progressive from learn to swim upwards:

Sunday 6pm-6.45pm – This session is our learn to swim program where the pool is made up of widths from shallow to deep, plus an initial length lane for swimmers who can swim 2+ lengths on at least 2 of the full strokes. Ages 5 upwards.

Sunday 6.45pm-7.45pm – This session is for improving length swimmers who can swim at least 3 different strokes with correct technique for 50m+ moving up into early competitive standards.

Sunday 7.45pm-9pm – session for competitive swimmers who can swim all 4 strokes over multiple lengths. We have several county level swimmers and a county champion in this group !

If you are not sure, come along to an earlier session and we will assess you in what we think is an appropriate session, don’t be afraid to ask or contact Matt in advance for further info. We also swim on Friday & Monday nights for the length swimmers, once you’ve experienced a Sunday we can provide more details.

You can contact Matt through Adrian or direct by e-mailing matthew.dye@btinternet.com

Captains Corner

dB hides his bonce from the sun...
Our men's captain is Steve de Boltz...

Our men's captain is Steve de Boltz

Just a few words of encouragement to you all as I won’t be present at Norwich. I’m off to a wedding in France, so while you’re all slogging round the course, I’ll be taking in the sights of Mont Blanc.

Good luck if you’re racing at Norwich in the club championship, I know from the previous couple of years that it’s a great swim, speedy bike and challenging run. Let’s hope it’s not too windy. Every time I’ve raced this year, the wind seems gale force. Keep an eye out for a big red and black flag as it can be used as a general meeting point for the club.

If you’re wondering what happened to me at Harwich, I picked up an injury so pulled out of the super sprint on Saturday and only did the swim (shortened to 900 metres due to strong winds) and bike on Sunday which was very frustrating as I was going well. Thanks must go to Mary Lumkin and Mike Stollery for stopping me as adrenaline had taken over and I wanted to head on out on the run which would have been a foolish mistake.

Again good luck in your racing they’re coming thick and fast now.

Good Times.

..."the people" take it easy at Wimbleball...
...our ladies' captain is Kate Stannett.

Our ladies' captain is Kate Stannett.

Nick (Collinson), Charlie (Stannett) and I have just got back from completing the Ironman70.3 UK at Wimbleball. You can read Charlie's race report later.

I've been training harder than ever before and managed to improve my PB for Wimbleball by 14 minutes. Last year I came 4th in my age-group and this year's time would have have given me a 2nd last year. But this time it only warranted a 5th - something which has reminded me of a few things.

  • Wimbleball's reputation as THE 70.3 to beat is beginning to spread, and some really good quality athletes are coming over from mainland Europe and elsewhere to tackle it.
Which I think lays down the gauntlet to our own good quality athletes - that's you - to enter next year and show them how it's done.

  • One should never be complacent.
Yes, I've been training and training, and improving as a consequence.  But so are the other people.  If you are aiming for a place, then you can't afford to play ostrich - you have to look at how other people are doing.

  • But don't get too hung up about it - remember why you're doing any given event.
I still race because I truly enjoy the sport but I had to remember that, large an event as it was, this was really a training event for me - my main "A" race isn't until September. So, for example, I only tapered a little bit.
I didn't qualify for the world championships (albeit by just one place in the roll down) but I still enjoyed myself - and made new friends, some of whom I hope will soon be joining the club. And
I did manage to beat Nick's time - for T2.

I also scared the wits out of one poor girl who had all but given up on the run - in tears and completely exhausted - when I cajoled and bullied her into carrying on. She grabbed me later to thank me profusely, but only after she had been heard sobbing to a friend "the people wouldn't let me stop"...

It is worth noting that, with most of the European events, you can get most of your money back if you withdraw reasonably early, and some events even offer a cancellation insurance.

Also - I am working on a "bike profiles" comparison chart (stretching the various maps to get the same vertical scale) which I will send out to my Ironman aspirants e-mail list in due course.  At first sight, Germany looks the flattest, Lanzarote has some relentlessly long grinds, the others have some sharper stuff.

Club sessions - Thursday nights, Saturday mornings & ad hoc
Thursdays
Club sessions at Greshams, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich

Steve dB tells me that "Thursday night informal sessions continue although numbers are a bit light, probably due to all the races going on at weekends, oh yes and muppets like me with injuries."

The emphasis on Thursday evenings is social rather than structured coaching. However, there are changing facilities and showers at Greshams and quite a few members use this as an opportunity to train with colleagues - of varying abilities. If you want to join the folks who go out for training, then come in time to change and be ready for a 7:00pm start.  Otherwise, they tend to head into the club bar for a beer and some food from about 8:00pm onwards.

03/07/08.  Shell garage run (pre-Norwich Tri)

10/07/08.  Fynn Valley woods run.

17/07/08.  Bike ride (1 hour duration)

24/07/08.  Dave’s house run (Tuddenham Road/ Woodbridge Road)

31/07/08.  Fynn Valley run.

07/08/08.  Dales Road run.

If you are staying on after training, can you please bring suitable clothing to change into - some of the other customers are not too keen on seeing people dressed in sweaty lycra in the bar. The showers are (usually) very good.

Other news & club notices
Changes of kit arrangements

Junior kit - Adrian Green has agreed to look after the distribution of junior kit so, for smaller sizes, please contact Adrian direct on 01379 388855 or e-mail: juniors@ipswich-tri.org .

Senior kit - John Wankowski has offered to take over distribution of all other kit from Heather Collinson later this year.  For the time being continue to contact Heather but please remember that although club kit is ordered through Heather, she does not run an "open all hours" shop, nor does she hold unlimited stock.

E-mail orders to kit@ipswich-tri.org or ringing 01473-620651. You will need to confirm your order by sending a cheque (payable to "Ipswich triathlon club") to Heather at 14 Spindler Close, Kesgrave, Ipswich, IP5 2DA.

We have had to introduce "payment with order" as one or two members have let the side down by not paying up promptly - the committee is discussing what sanctions to apply.

Eastern Region league
As well as the children's race series mentioned above, Triathlon England Eastern Region are this year additionally running an Adult Race Series based on Standard Distance Races in the Region.

Dunwich Dynamo
Graham Coulter wonders what he's let himself in for...
Graham Coulter
Graham Coulter is taking part in this year's Dunwich Dynamo - starting 19th July - and hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for Cancer Research.

Graham's friends Amanda and Glenn Rossell died within two years of each other. Amanda lost her fight with breast cancer aged just 34 and her husband Glenn died a year ago in a freak motor cycle accident.

"They were both very special friends and are deeply missed by everybody that knew them" says Graham. "After Amanda died Glenn raised several thousand pounds for Cancer Research and I just want to try and do something worthwhile in their memory."

On the evening of 19th July Graham will set off from Hackney, London and cycle through the night 120 miles and arrive in Dunwich the following morning for breakfast. "The thought of doing it for them will help me keep going and if people could sponsor me too, it would be a great way to support such an important charity".

Shotley Peninsula Challenge The Long Distance Walkers Association are putting on a 55 mile "challenge event" around the Shotley Peninsula on Sat 13th & Sun 14th September 2008, starting at Holbrook.  Although it is an LDWA event I'm guessing you can run it if you want to - ideal for a shake-down for those of you doing the Vitruvian the week before. Try http://www.ldwa.org.uk/challenge_events/show_event.php?list_option=S&list_type=F&event_id=3234 (it had a bug when I last looked) or http://www.ldwa.org.uk/lgt/web_page.php?c=13&p=246 for details..
Dedham 10k Want something shorter than the Shotley challenge? Try the Dedham 10K (and 3K Fun Run) on Sunday 21st September, Dedham Playing Field. Entry forms available from their website www.dedhamrun.co.uk. All proceeds to Dedham Primary School and Dedham Youth Club
This is a surprisingly hilly course.

Cycling The ICA Time Trial series 2008 started on Wednesday 9th April and continues to 6th August without a break. There are three courses, at Stowmarket, Crowfield and Henley. For further details see http://www.ipswichbicycleclub.co.uk/ and click on Events in the side bar.

(from Dave Copland)

Whole Hog The Suffolk "Whole Hog" obstacle event takes place on the 2nd November 2008. At seven miles it is shorter than last year but with more challenging obstacles. For more details see www.acefundraising.co.uk but you might also want to talk to Kate or Charlie Stannett who did it last year and weren't overly impressed with some aspects of the 2007 event.

Nokia Windsor triathlon - 15th June - Wendy Quantrill

Wendy’s Windy Windsor

After a heavy duty carb load at Browns Restaurant in Windsor - with entertainment provided from skinny dippers across the road – we headed back to our hotel for an early night ahead of 4:30am alarm calls.

My swim start was 6:12 and I just had time to get a good luck hug from my Dad, who had got up at silly o’clock to come and see us on Fathers’ Day!

This was my first open water race but I’d done some training at Gosfield. The swim was more enjoyable than I expected but very slow. I just couldn’t get going due to the strong current and my lack of tactics – I should have hugged the river bank but I’ve ended up heading down the middle towards the buoy which didn’t seem to be getting any closer. I also swallowed loads of air during the swim though which made for painful third run lap. My swim split for 750m was 00:30:11 including T1. This compares to a swim time at Waveney last month of 9:26 for 400m including T1!

Having come out so far back in my swim wave I overtook a lot of people on the bike. It’s a fast bike leg with lovely scenery going into Windsor Great Park. I felt really strong thanks to a good taper, averaging 19 miles an hour. Bike split for 29k 00:58:51 including T2.

Run started great and I was going along well until I developed an awful stitch (thanks to aforementioned trapped wind!) so I was running all bent over on third lap in a lot of pain. Not pretty. Final run time for 5.5k 00:27:44.

I’ll definitely be going back for more next year (the Olympic). Although I’ll be hugging that river bank and packing the Wind-eze! It’s a great race for spectators as they get to see you so often – swim start and finish and six times on the run!

After finishing we were able to cheer on / heckle the Bowditches who were finishing the run leg of the Olympic Distance. Then it was all back to the hotel with our proud dads for a big fry up while watching the last of the Elites run over Eton Bridge!

Sprint results
Danny Clifford - 01:41:30 (7th in age group)
Clive Quantrill - 01:45:42 (13th in age group)
Wendy Quantrill - 01:56:47 (22nd in age group)

Olympic results
Mark Bowditch - 02:21:51 (15th in age group)
Lucy Bowditch - 02:37:14 (2nd in age group)

[NB - Channel 4 should be showing the Windsor event one Sunday morning]

Ironman 70.3 UK - 15th June - Charlie Stannett

I've been banging on for ages about how difficult this event is but I always guessed that most people - quite understandably - put my slow times down to my all round ineptitude. Give me a kick float and I swim backwards; I still need stabilisers on my bike for windy days; and I've spent years learning how to jog long and slow. Very slow.  I'm not very good at getting in and out of clothes quickly - and don't even start on the nutritional value of beer, crisps and peanuts...

So I am really happy that other people are beginning to notice the undules. This stuff is lifted from http://www.insidetri.com/article/71513/fraser-cartmell-bella-comerford-win-uk-ironman-703

They call this race the “World’s Toughest 70.3,” and Ironman UK 70.3, with 52 hills in 56 miles of the bike course, more than lived up to its moniker Sunday.

Giving a clue to the difficulty of the course, Fraser Cartmell’s winning time was 4:17:39, about 20 minutes slower than America’s toughest half Ironman – Wildflower. Likewise, Bella Comerford raced her brains out and it still took her 4:49:44 to finish the job – 20 minutes more than Samantha McGlone’s Wildflower course record and 42 minutes slower than the Ironman 70.3 world best set by Mirinda Carfrae in Clearwater on a flat course.

Closer to home, our respected chairman Nick Collinson, who thinks nothing of doing l'Etape before breakfast, found that he had to stand in bottom gear, and he failed to break five hours for a middle-distance the first time ever.

But ironically it wasn't the bike or run that caused most difficulties. It was the swim. Or rather the mist, which mistook the starting horn for the mating call of a foghorn and, as a consequence, suddenly blew in across the lake.

I had taken my usual stance at the back of the field, took a last look at the tree line 700-800m away, then readjusted my goggles. Low flying cloud envelopes Wimbleball Lake..."Hawooger" - I look up and the trees have disappeared, as have all the buoys. No matter, I'll follow the consensus - and I see over 1,000 hats going in 1,000 different directions.  Finally, about 200-300m out, the mist clears enough for me to start seeing things - and I see a bright green-hatted novice clearly treading water rather than swimming. My killer instinct never has really developed so I stopped: he was panicking and trying to pull his wetsuit away so I talked to him to help calm him down and called a boat over.

Needless to say my swim wasn't a PB but I did make the cut-off. However, mindful of my collapse in T1 last year, I did take it very easily up the hill from the lake to transition - net result being that I was, in effect, five minutes into the bike time allowance before I'd even started pedalling.

By the time I got to the end of the first of the two loops in the bike leg I was struggling with the "is it worth it" arithmetic - not helped by walking up one of the hills a bit early on loop one but that was purely to avoid riding over the woman who had just come to a halt in the saddle and fallen over in front of me. However, coaxed on by my badgering coach (the stuffed toy I have on my aerobars - I don't feel as silly talking to a toy badger as I would talking to myself), I decided that provided we worked a bit harder we would just make the bike cut-off.

I had a couple of incidents on the second loop. A chap from JAFFA dropped in beside me to have a chat. I had to persuade him to either overtake me or drop back. (He then dropped back very suddenly when it started to rain a bit.) And there was a rogue cyclist who wasn't racing and so ignored the "No overtaking" warnings just before the death descent.

With six miles to go the mental arithmetic was going into overdrive and I was giving "gee up or you'll miss the cut-off" warnings to people as I overtook them. The chap I felt most for was somebody whose pedal fell off with just four miles to go. I told him to try and run the next mile - the final three were mostly down hill - but I think he timed out.

No matter, I made the bike cut-off - just. Then it was just a case of breaking out the Polos in T2 and beginning the trot up, down and around the fantastic Wimbleball Lake park area which, by now, was bathed in sunshine. I was more disciplined than usual and held off the Polo-distribution until my third and final lap by which time some of the marshals were actually waiting for their mints!

But the grand finale goes back to the weather. Just as I started the final sprint for home, a hail storm let loose. I was only just able to hear Don the commentator announce that I had a 10 minutes PB...

Calendar of events
This is just a small selection of events, mainly those eligible for the ITCH league.

You should look at sites such as www.britishtriathlon.org and www.ebta.co.uk for triathlons, and for local running events, see http://www.suffolkathletics.org.uk/ - most members are eligible to enter for "county championship" events. (Remember to tick the box, and to wear your club kit.  We have had quite a few age group podium places over the years - especially in the longer events. We also usually do fairly well as a team in both the cross-country and Friday Five series.)

Events which are eligible for the ITCH league are followed by an "ITCH" number, which is the weighting or tariff for that event in the league.

The Great North Swim is a one mile open water swim taking place on Lake Windermere on Saturday 13th September. Inspired by the Great North Run, elite competitors will form the front end of the field while the rest will be comprised of swimmers of all abilities. Wetsuits are optional and will be available to hire on the day. You must be over 15 years of age, and able to swim one mile in the pool in order to take part. See www.greatnorthswim.org or a psychiatrist.

The London Triathlon still has some charity places available, although all charity entries will close on July 1st. See  http://www.thelondontriathlon.co.uk/LTcharity.html .

Runner's World have started test-marketing a new magazine - "Triathlete's World".  As far as I know it's currently only available bundled in with Runner's World and/or available to existing subscribers. You can see a preview article at http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=3477 - or you could always try ringing the subscription people on 01858-438838 and asking them for a copy...

Another "exciting new website", www.reviewmyrun.com is "a new website dedicated to giving you guidance on local races (East Of England to start....and then the world!) - providing reviews, pictures and information including entry fees, car parking, organization, course information and general atmosphere for races your members are running. This site will build into the local runners (and organizer's) bible for finding that 'great race' to take the family, run a P.B. or just fill a date in the  running calendar."
