ITCH July 2008

Welcome to ITCH - the Ipswich triathlon club hand-out - for July 2008...

July has been a busy month with both the club championships and our first open event of the year at Culford. Kate Stannett, Dave Copland and Matt Dye write more about these below but congratulations go to our 2008 club champions:

Champions:
John Wankowski

Lucy Bowditch

Champion vets:
Dave Copland

Julia Yelloly

Champion supervet:

Graham White
[there is no female champion supervet for 2008]

John's result is particularly outstanding when you remember that he started the year as a novice, winning the novice category at Wattisham.

The trophies will be presented at the club AGM, which will be held on Thursday club night, 13th November.

(It is not too late to get YOUR name on one of the championship trophies.  We are replacing the old trophies and sponsorship is still invited for two of the new ones.)

Elsewhere, congratulations to Ross Welton, who became an Ironman at Switzerland.
To see Ross finishing, visit www.internettv.ch - from the IMCH site, "suchen" for "Welton", then double-click Ross's time to start the film rolling at the right spot. It's worth doing just to see him bent double and speechless...

Talking of which, I have updated the "Ironman 2009 aspirants" table from last issue as a reminder that anybody thinking of trying a European Ironman in 2009 really does have to get their entry in now or, realistically, aim for IMUK09.  But don't worry if you aren't interested in Ironman - I intend moving this item way down the reading list from August, by which time all 2009 aspirants are likely to have got their entries in, or settled for 2010.

Meanwhile, we've a busy weekend coming up with sundry members competing in London & Cambridge - and also our own Hero of Telemark leaping into some freezing cold fjord for the start of the Norseman. Latest news is that, because of problems with the mountain lift, all competitors (and support people) will have to walk down from the mountain after finishing. Nice.

Good luck to everybody - and keep those race reports coming in.

Captains Corner

..."the people" take it easy at Wimbleball...
Our ladies' captain is Kate Stannett...

dB pleads to be allowed to squander a month's house-keeping to enter IM Switzerland...
... men's captain Steve de Boltz is on his hols, trying to persuade Mrs Steve to let him enter IMCH09

Our ladies' captain is Kate Stannett.

What a grand day out we had at the club championships at Norwich. We fairly swept the board with club members taking podium positions in many age groups.

Special mentions I think should go to Lucy Bowditch taking 2nd lady overall; Heather Collinson back competing in triathlon for the first time since bringing self-appointed club ambassador Phoebe into the world; and Jason Battle whose story is so bizarre as to be almost unbelievable. (A pair of horses escaped onto the road and galloped alongside the cyclists for a couple of miles when one threw a shoe which went right through Jason’s front wheel snapping spokes and buckling the wheel. Jason didn’t fall off but valiantly continued wiggling and squeaking to finish in a creditable time. His story also generated a fair bit of bemusement amongst Eurosport’s Tour de France commentary team.)

Thanks to Dave Copland for publishing some Norwich photos on http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/DaveCopland/NorwichTriathlon2008

I should also like to thank Dave in his role as race director for organising our own event at Culford, and everyone who turned out on the day to help.

It took a lot of bullying and cajoling to persuade enough people to come along and help at Culford so I feel I should stress just how important these events are to the club. Not only do they help cement our reputation as a serious club – with Culford often being a “first experience” for people - but any surplus generated from these events goes towards subsidising our running costs. Put simply, your subscription to the club is as low as it is because part of the deal is that you volunteer for at least one event.

I know that both Dave and men’s captain Steve dB would also like to thank everybody who came along to help make Culford a very successful day for the club.

Culford race director's report - Dave Copland

I'm happy to say that this year's Culford Triathlon went very smoothly overall. The finish line looked much more professional than in previous years with the large chequered flags. No-one seemed very bothered by the extended run from swim to transition and the St John volunteers didn't have to attend to any athletes. The sunny weather played its part too, with lots of competitors and families relaxing afterwards around the finish area and contributing to the atmosphere.

I've received plenty of feedback, all positive so far. Here's some examples:

  • "I just wanted to drop you a line to congratulate you for organising by far the best triathlon I have competed in so far. I am already looking forward to next year!"

  • "This was my first triathlon and I enjoyed it immensely. The organisation was first class and marshalled effectively with empathy and a sense of fun.
In fact the scene was set when on my arrival I was informed that the most important rule was 'to have fun and enjoy it'. This helped relax nerves as I then didn't feel so embarrassed when my swim deceived people into thinking that I was a long lost survivor from the Titanic disaster!"

  • "My son Joe competed in his first ever tri, and is hooked...road bike on the list for birthday/Christmas! Thanks to all of you he has had a wonderful introduction to the sport."

Of course, we learn from every event and there are things that we can improve next time. For instance, I learnt that it's vital to check in good time that the lane ropes have been put out. Also, our drinks stations could only just cope with the demand, again due largely to the weather.

Photos from the event are on-line for viewing or purchase from www.mphotography.co.uk

A big thank you to all the members and friends who turned out to help this year: Steve DeBoltz, Derrick Smith, Charlie Tovell, Greg Allen, William Catchpole, Sheila Smith, Julia Yelloly, Iain Downie, Susannah Rosenberg, Derek Daly, Zuita Daly, Ross Welton, Emily Carter, Marion Carter, Charlie Stannett, Kate Stannett, Barbara Tottle, Karl Chubb, Mervyn Wake, Nick Collinson, Michael Jones, Peter Lennard, James Bouttell, Dave Coley, Sarah Coulter & children, Joe Goddard, Kevin Goddard, Graham White, Annette, White, Isabel Smith, Helen Eggar, Michelle Constable, Stephen Constable, Colin Mallett, Maria Reynolds, Gemma Basham, Chris Slemmings' friend (whose name I didn't get), Jason Battle, Antony Birt, Jacqueline Chubb, Liz McGoldrick and Brian McGeeney.
Apologies if I've missed anyone.

These people did a great job helping both with set-up and on race day but there's also a lot of invisible work that's done well before the race. Simon Palmer, Mike Stollery, Derrick Smith and John Wankowski all made my job a lot easier this year in that respect.

Derrick did his best to give a goody bag to all the volunteers on the day but in the rush I'm sure a few people didn't get theirs. If you helped out and didn't get your goody bag, please get in touch with me at culford@ipswich-tri.org.

So, thanks again. We put on a good show; let's make sure the Junior Tri and Duathlon are just as good.

Dave Copland

Volunteers are needed for the Junior (at Framlingham on August 24th) and the Duathlon (at Alton on September 21st).
Simon Palmer is co-ordinating volunteers for Framlingham.

Derrick Smith is co-ordinating volunteers for the duathlon. Derrick writes:

The following people have committed to volunteer at the Duathlon on 21st September. [ where (d) means help on race day and (s) is help with set up on Saturday 20th. (ds) means help at  both]

Jason Baillie (ds), Nik Bestow (Race Director (ds)), James Bouttell (d), Lucy Bowditch (d), William Catchpole (ds), Heather Collinson (d), Ross Corbyn (ds),  Sarah Coulter (ds), Derek Daly (ds), Brian Mcgeeney (s), Nicola Miller (s), Mark Newman (s), Carol Nicholls (s), Max O'Rourke (d), Nick Paine (ds), Simon Palmer (ds), Paul Rea (d), Robert Peevor (d), Chris Slemmings (d), Derrick Smith (ds), Kate Stannett (ds), Charlie Stannett (ds), Danny Thorrington (s), John Wankowski (s), Mervyn Wake (d), Graham White (s), Thomas Wood (s)

We need over 30 volunteers to cover race day duties and  are currently well short  of that number so please contact Derrick Smith (marshal co-ordinator) at derrick.smith@bt.com to offer your support.

Many thanks.

Ironman and other long-distance events in Europe

Apologies for any mistakes but this looked to be the position as at 30th July.  I know of a couple of members who are planning to try a full Ironman in 2009 but whose names I couldn't find in the competitor lists.  If you are planning to do an Ironman (IM) in Europe in 2009 you really do need to act now. You are already too late to enter for Germany and Austria, with Switzerland now also filling fast.  If you want local support/competition, read the small print in the table below. Of the IM events taking entries (or still to open) for 2009, Switzerland is current favourite amongst Ipswich members, with Lanzarote & UK also figuring in members' plans.

It is worth noting that, with most of the European events, you can get most of your money back if you withdraw reasonably early, and some events even offer a cancellation insurance.

(* I've already admitted that my main attraction to IM Switzerland was because they named their website after me ("ironman.ch" - ho ho). I suspect Ross is only doing the independent German event because he thinks it was named after him...)

Club sessions - Thursday nights, Saturday mornings & ad hoc
Thursdays
Club sessions at Greshams, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich

The emphasis on Thursday evenings is social rather than structured coaching. However, there are changing facilities and showers at Greshams and quite a few members use this as an opportunity to train with colleagues - of varying abilities. If you want to join the folks who go out for training, then come in time to change and be ready for a 7:00pm start.  Otherwise, they tend to head into the club bar for a beer and some food from about 8:00pm onwards.

 31st Jul     Fynn Valley run.

  7th Aug    Dales Road run.

14th Aug    One hour bike + short run round the fields

21st Aug    Fynn Valley woods run

28th Aug    Christchurch Park hill run

9th Sep    Shell garage run (pre-Vitruvian/IMUK weekend)

13th Nov    Club AGM

If you are staying on after training, can you please bring suitable clothing to change into - some of the other customers are not too keen on seeing people dressed in sweaty lycra in the bar. The showers are (usually) very good.

Saturdays

07-07-08 Club championships - we had a very successful time of it at the Norwich triathlon, bringing home a major podium place and numerous age-group wins.  Well done to everybody - even the club member who thought it was a horse race.
If you were there, please send me a paragraph or two (or more) for ITCH...

02-07-08 ITCH league correction - the version shown in ITCH used the wrong tariff - the "long" tariff - for the IM70.3 instead of the "middle" tariff. This has been corrected in my "current standings" master file, which now also shows the 2007 totals so you can see how you're improving.

ITCH league

This table shows the position following Culford - with Simon Palmer leading the men and Amanda Mallet leading the ladies, but with both having four scores each. Jason Baillie is our most frequent flyer, having already done five of which his highest four points bring him into second place.  However, if we look behind Jason & Amanda, we can see that some of the three-timers are closing in fast.
