Depending on the election, this may be my last ITCH, so thanks for your support - especially for the ITCH league.

Meanwhile, the first weekend of September saw members of Ipswich triathlon club busy at four events, including the UK Ironman in Dorset and the national middle-distance championships in Rutland.

Ironman UK – Sherborne, Dorset

The Ironman triathlon comprises a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and then a full 26.2 mile marathon.  Conditions were far from perfect, with a very strong headwind for much of the bike course and the multi-terrain marathon being very muddy in places, but this didn’t stop six members of Ipswich triathlon club from completing their challenge to become an Ironman.

Four men represented the club. Mark Bowditch, doing his first Ironman, finished in 12 hours 25.  Greg Allen, raising money for Sue Ryder Care and their new centre for Dementia in Ipswich, finished in 13:03. Simon Lockwood, still suffering from an accident during training, clocked 13:40, while Charlie Stannett scraped round in 15:47.

But it was our two women who stole glory.

Kate Stannett finished her fourth Ironman in fourth position in her age group with 13:08 – a good time but still over an hour behind Lucy Bowditch (below).

The camera never lies - Kate was green with envy when she took this...!
Lucy Bowditch holding her IMUK trophy back home in Suffolk.
If the picture looks a little bit green, blame it on the state of mind of the photographer at the time!

Competing in her first Ironman, and mainly to raise money for charity, Lucy won their age group with a phenomenal time of just 11:54 - a performance which would have qualified Lucy for the world championships in Hawaii had she not been otherwise engaged.

Simon, clearly still elated, commented: you must have seen the write ups! wow 1 was writen like soilders going off to the battle field brave and honourable, well done ever one very well done lucy, for me was a fantastic moment in the midlife crisis iv been going throu for the last 10years ha ha!from clinging to the tent poles at 4.30 in the morning not wanting to except i had to do it cos id told all my friends i was, to feeling on top of the world as i ran over the line with my kids and a young girl we had spent the lst 13miles together.

Brilliant.

Vitruvian – Rutland Water – incorporating British Triathlon middle-distance championships

The Vitruvian – which is raced over a half-Ironman distance course – was held in very damp conditions.

Our star of the show was Dave Copland, who collected silver in the British Triathlon Championship with a time of 4:37.

Other Ipswich Triathlon Club finishers included: Ross Welton (4:41), Graham White (4:57), Derrick Smith (5:05), Iain Downie (5:08), Antony Birt (5:13), John Wankowski (5:14), Steve de Boltz (5:17),  Mike Stollery (5:28), Brian McGeeney (5:33) and Julia Yelloly (5:49).

Ironman 70.3 Monaco

Like the Vitruvian, the Ironman 70.3 Monaco is raced over a half-Ironman distance course – but with the special attraction of some brutal climbs on the bike leg.

Club chairman Nick Collinson was happy to finish in 5:45 – which included an hour riding up a 20km ascent out of Monaco, and a run which included the famous F1 tunnel.

Clacton Standard triathlon

Three Ipswich Triathletes stayed closer to home to compete in Clacton’s “standard” distance triathlon, comprising a 1500m sea swim, 40km bike and 10km run. A car accident closed the second lap of the bike course to some athletes.

Ipswich times were: Matt Dye (2:18), Clive Quantrill (2.27) and Stephen Suter (2:50).

Captains Corner

Elvis has left the building...
Our men's captain is Steve de Boltz...

Our men's captain for 2008 has been Steve de Boltz

The triathlon season is drawing to a close for another year once again, hopefully you’ve all had a successful one and reached all those targets you set yourself. Most local races were well attended by people in the red and black of Ipswich, from the shores of Harwich and Clacton to the inland waters of Norwich and Rutland, to the poolside of Waveney and Wattisham we were there.

Personally I’ve had a mixed season and haven’t actually completed an Olympic distance race (probably my favourite). The highlight was crossing the line at the end of the Vitruvian. The low point was having to stop after the bike leg at Harwich Olympic due to a calf injury, this being my first ever DNF in four years of racing. The weather has definitely not helped this year and many training sessions and races have been on grey damp days. Let’s hope next year will be a bit warmer and not so wet. When’s this global warming kicking in?

I shall be stepping down as Men’s Captain. Although the role is not difficult, the main responsibility (as I see it) is to be one of the vital committee members( without it the club cannot exist), to be there as a point of contact and generally encourage club people to get out there and take part. I am nominating Ross Welton for the role.

Don’t forget the AGM on the 13th of November at Greshams, Tuddenham Road. This is another vital part of the club and a time to meet with fellow members.

SEE YOU THERE.

Ladies' captain Kate Stannett...
...our ladies' captain is Kate Stannett.

Our ladies' captain for 2008 has been Kate Stannett.

The triathlon season is now over and we're settling into the winter programme but our women have had a fabulous year, proving we are a force to be reckoned with.

It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as ladies' captain for Ipswich triathlon club and, although I won't be suicidal if you would like a change of ladies' captain, I have agreed to stand for the role of ladies' captain for 2009.

Happy training - stay safe, seen and injury free.

Vitruvian report - Steve dB writes a race report!

"Didn’t we have a lovely time the day we went to Rutland,

A groggy old day, we had rain on the way,

And all for the love of the sport you know.’

Or something like that, I’m not a songwriter."

It was a cold and damp day that greeted us as we rose from our plush no star, no thrills Travelodge on the A1 not far from anywhere. Breakfast at the ungodly hour of 4:30am was my customary bowl of cornflakes from a plastic chip tray with matching fork I’d scrounged from the pub the night before as I’d remembered the cornflakes, milk and sugar but not the bowl. Jane stayed in bed while I tried to sort myself and get off to Rutland Water to rack. Having seemed to draw the short straw on parking I then had what felt like a mile hike with all my gear to the transition area. I’d registered the night before (good move) so straight in transition to grab a spot, in the end I think the weather had put a few off as I had plenty of room. I set my transition area up then went to find the others, most of whom seemed to be in the huge queue for the rather inadequate row of portaloos. Once I’d established I wasn’t going to be anywhere near a loo by the time my wave went, I took evasive action.

Once in the water, neck deep in wavy weeds. I had a little warm up swim which conveniently put me on the front line for the start. A quick blast on the hooter and we were off, the swim felt good, if you train in the murky waters at Gosfield Lake once a week, anywhere feels good. I was going strong when I suddenly realised I was swimming in the wavy weeds again, a quick check on my bearings and I’d gone off target a bit, the canoeist hadn’t shouted at me so I wasn’t too far off and there were still one or two people outside me. A quick sharp turn put me back in amongst everyone else. First lap completed, out of the water, run along the shore then I threw myself full on surf rescue style back in for lap two, round again and out. 1.9km successfully completed, no hassles. Into transition wetsuit off fine then the real novice kicked in, shall I go for the cycle shirt/arm warmer/ gloves/socks combo or how about the waterproof/gloves/socks or even the sod it go as I am look. I looked around to see what others were doing and in the end I opted for gilet/gloves and no socks, which I think worked. Great bike course, a little windy, a little undulating, a little air cadet stood at the junction. I’d driven the bike course in the dark the night before so I was ready for the notorious Rutland Ripple, it was not too bad and Susannah screaming like only Susannah can at the top helped you over and put a smile on your face. Round I went. As I entered the feed station I discarded a bottle to make way for a new one and managed to throw away the wrong one which was full, Whoops. Then back out for the second lap which actually felt quicker, also it’s always a good feeling passing people with disc wheels, somehow it feels like a morale victory for common folk like myself.

Into T2, whoops wrong transition area, thank you Jane for pointing it out after I’d realised and making all those spectators laugh. Helmet off, gloves off, gilet off, shoes on, cap on, go. I couldn’t actually feel my feet for the first mile as they were frozen but I needn’t have worried there was plenty of time to warm up. Out and back twice, the first lap was ok, plenty of high fives with Ross, Dave, Ant, Iain, Derek etc, second lap I didn’t see any of them as I spent six miles looking at the ground wondering if it would ever end. As Julia caught me she insisted I take some dextrose she had which helped and were much appreciated, I didn’t appreciate the way she ran away from me as if I was going backwards.  Eventually I made it across the line with half a smile and a real urgency to sit down quickly. I got my finishers t-shirt and completely missed the table of chocolate and crisps ‘DOH’

All in all a great race and a great weekend, I was aiming for 5:15 and did 5:17 so room for improvement. Thanks to all ITC members that did it with me and the girls for their much needed support. And a big thank you to my wife Jane for putting up with me. The word on the street is we’re all going back next year, so come along the more the merrier. And you too can listen to that girl shout over the microphone:

‘YOU ARE A VITRUVIAN’

Ipswich triathlon club conquers the Vitruvian...

Da Vinci's picture of the perfect human specimen...
Club members who completed the 2008 Vitruvian, earning the right to wear the distinctive Da Vinci-inspired tee-shirt, included Brian McGeeney, Mike Stollery, Steve dB, Swiss Tony Birt, Ross Welton, Julia Yelloly, Dave Copland, Iain Downie & Derrick Smith.

Graham White & John Wankowski are missing from this shot.

But, behind every success, look for the all-important support crew: Mary Lumkin (so who took the photograph?), Jane dB, Sheila Smith, Emily Carter, Mary Skelcher & Susannah Rosenberg.

...with a little help from their friends!

We've heard that next year's Vitruvian is planned for 5th September.

Double Ipswich celebrations at the Lafarge Helwith Bridge Duathlon (4 miles/23 miles/4 miles) - Susannah Rosenberg

Dave Copland won the Male 45-49 category and I won the Female 45-49 category.

Dave was actually 1st over 40 and was 5th overall.  I was last overall which meant that I got the biggest cheer at the finish :-)

Oh dear, I’m slower than ever, but I really enjoyed myself.

The first run was a gentle plod, with a bit of walking up most of the uphills.  I have great momentum (aka an enormous bum) to get me down the downhills at a reasonable pace.

I really enjoyed the cycle, was a bit disappointed with my time, but I was having fantastic time.  When I set off Vince (the race organiser) told me to enjoy myself – I assured him that I would.  And whenever it was tough I didn’t tell myself to “harden up”, but I congratulated myself on being the only woman of my age in the country to get up and do this whole race. (My mate Sally was running in a relay team, so I didn’t count her!)  Also, I only had to look around me to see the most stunningly beautiful countryside with gorgeous blue skies – amazing given that there were 6 floods on the bike route the previous day and the organisers were on the brink of cancelling the event.

Apparently while I was out on the bike they were wondering who should tell me that I was out of time to start on the 2nd run – but no-one was brave enough to volunteer!  As it was, I was back well within the time limit.  I had 1 hour to get round the second 4 mile ‘run’.  This sounds easy enough, but it is a very hilly route and I was doing ‘quite a bit’ of walking, but I made it back with 8 minutes to spare and went directly to the massage table before they packed up.  So I had 2 fellas grabbing my legs and inflicting far more pain than the race had done!

Anyway, courtesy of sponsors Lafarge, I won a trophy, a bottle of wine and £20 of SweatShop vouchers and a big cheer :-)  Job done!

The next morning we got up and went for a short cycle before breakfast – made me feel not quite so guilty when I tucked into the full English.  Then we had the long drive home so I am now stiffer than a very stiff thing.

Sunday – the standard distance.

After a small delay for the weather to improve a bit and the tides to ebb a bit further to help flatten the waves, the swim went ahead.

The swim course was moved inshore 50m-100m to permit sufficient safety cover from the combined efforts of the RNLI, Coastguard, sailing club boat and a man in a canoe! Thus swim length probably reduced to 1300-1400m and about 1 knot of tide also helped push us along rather nicely. Thankfully the large radar tower on-shore somewhere behind the finish line provided a good sighting point and there were 4-5 large buoys en-route. So even my very wayward (sometime even circular!) swimming managed to keep a fairly straight course.

Two lap bike course, sadly a car crash closed the 2nd lap to the last 30 or so cyclists so 1st lap times were doubled for those. The sun came out for a rather nice run to Clacton and pier and back along the prom.

All in all, a really nice event with about 190 competitors in total. Look forward to doing it again next year.

Sarah in muddier conditions in the UK
Back home in Blighty
Il Lavoro Italiano (aka The Italian Job) - Sarah "Strivs" Miller (on right in picture below)

Sarah Miller is just squeezing in on the right as you look at this picture...The World Duathlon Championships - Rimini, Italy - 27th September 2008

This was my third outing in a GB vest having competed in the World & European Champs in 2007 but for some reason I was far more apprehensive this year – any race that involves transporting an expensive racing bike on a plane always has additional worries to a run-only race!  Still, I thought, at least I’ve got a weekend by the sea, in Italy (my favourite holiday destination) with lots of sunshine!  Sea, yes, Italy, “si” but sun, no!!  We left the UK in sunshine & arrived in Italy to grey skies & drizzle!!  It didn’t improve – in fact it got gradually worse!

The event was over 2 days; the Elite, junior & age-group women’s races being on the Saturday & the age-group men & team relays on the Sunday.  We woke up on the Saturday to howling winds but at least it wasn’t raining as well (the men had it much worse on the Sunday)!  The first run (which was 7 miles not 10k, though mercifully flat) was hard work - the wind was what can only be described as squally i.e. whichever direction you ran it was always in your face!  The bike leg, which consisted of 6 laps of a very flat route along the seafront 26.3 miles not 25/ 40k) – was pretty hairy too; as well as being buffeted in different directions we also got sandblasted!!  By the time I got to the second run (precisely 5k), the wind had dropped & it was much easier!  It was a much bigger field than 2007 & I had hoped, as I was in a different age group this year, that I might improve on last year but for some reason the female 50 – 54 group was huge!  I was never in danger of bothering the medallists but I managed to not come last in my age group or last overall which was my main goal!!

As in Hungary last year the atmosphere & organisation surrounding the race was superb.  The whole town seemed to be involved in one way or another & crowds turned out to cheer the athletes as we paraded behind our national flags for the opening ceremony & of course the pasta party beforehand was fabulous!  The goody bag was substantial as was the lovely Italian food at the closing party/medal ceremony!  Next year the World Champs are in North Carolina, USA so unless the Bank of Dad (which appears to be unaffected by the credit crunch) is very generous I’m unlikely to be able to go!  In 2010, it’s back to Bonny Scotland i.e. Edinburgh – venue for the 2007 European Champs!  Hope the is weather better than last time; I saw my life flashing before me as I came down from Arthur’s Seat on my bike in the foulest weather I have ever had to race in ….!!

Thursdays
Club sessions at Greshams, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich

The emphasis on Thursday evenings is social rather than structured coaching. However, there are changing facilities and showers at Greshams and quite a few members use this as an opportunity to train with colleagues - of varying abilities. If you want to join the folks who go out for training, then come in time to change and be ready for a 7:00pm start.  Otherwise, they tend to head into the club bar for a beer and some food from about 8:00pm onwards.

Make room for the buffet.
Nov 20 Fynn Valley Full Moon Fun with a Head Torch
Werewolf hunting over 5 miles of off-road cinder track
Nov 27 Valley Road Hills - Up, up and away.

Dec 11 Dave's House Run - 4.5 mile road route with a couple of gentle hills
Dec 18 Fynn Valley Full Moon Fun with a Head Torch -  5 miles off-road on a cinder track

If you are staying on after training, can you please bring suitable clothing to change into - some of the other customers are not too keen on seeing people dressed in sweaty lycra in the bar. The showers are (usually) very good.

ITCH league

No corrections were received to my separate mailing so I declare Dave Copland and Kate Stannett winners of
the ITCH league for 2008 - congratulations!  You can view the league table in the window below or click here to download the PDF.

Following my "heinous slur" in the last issue of ITCH when I dared to suggest that he might not have competed in club kit at the Norseman, Dave Copland has explained how he actually took off his kit at one point, put on his thermals, then relayered with the red & black.
He also pointed me to
http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/DaveCopland/Norseman2008#5235751100128674706 which shows "the sheer unremitting grind that is Norseman. It's halfway up Zombie Hill, or about 28k into the marathon."

Lucy Bowditch would have scored higher if she had worn club kit at IronmanUK which would have given her an extra place or so. Ross Welton would also have done very well had he not been competing as first claim for TriUK this year, although I haven't worked out just how much better.

Assuming I'm still Mr ITCH for 2009, I shall continue with the league, using very much the same format of a fixed number of events of varying lengths, chosen to support local events but also biggies that are popular with club members such as London and the Vitruvian. Send me your suggestions now.

Vitruvian results & league scores

I am sure the organisers have a good reason but the way they publish the results make them a pig to calculate things – PDF format only, no “GENDER POSITION” – so I’ve done this mostly manually (especially after attempts to convert from PDF to Word to Excel crashed our laptop for the third time!)

Ironman UK results & league scores

Lucy Bowditch put in a phenomenal performance but, under the "club kit" rule, it doesn't count for the league.  Had Lucy completed in club kit, she would have gained a massive 108.8 points, although not enough to change the overall league results.

Changes of kit arrangements

Junior kit
- Adrian Green looks after the distribution of junior kit so, for smaller sizes, please contact Adrian direct
on 01379 388855 or e-mail: juniors@ipswich-tri.org .

Senior kit - John Wankowski has now taken over distribution of all other kit from Heather Collinson.

E-mail orders to kit@ipswich-tri.org or ringing 01473-620651. You will need to confirm your order by sending a cheque (payable to "Ipswich triathlon club") to Heather at 14 Spindler Close, Kesgrave, Ipswich, IP5 2DA.

We have had to introduce "payment with order" as one or two members have let the side down by not paying up promptly.

Social networks Club member Wendy Quantrill has taken on a new role as the Community Manager for "We Are Triathlon" www.wearetriathlon.co.uk which seems to be aligned very closely to the London triathlon and its sponsors Mazda. Wendy says "the website is packed full of tri news and articles and a handy forum. So head over, sign up and say hello!"

Remember that Adrian Green has been moderating an "Ipswich triathlon club" group on facebook, while Dave & Susannah Copland are both frequenters of TriTalk at www.tritalk.co.uk/forums (although Dave thinks "the 'handy forum' seems a little, um, light on content").

I have also come across  www.athlinks.com , www.ironzip.com , www.tricentral.com (which I think might be closing down) and I was also invited to join an Ironman ™ networking community.  There is a more general community at www.pipl.com ...

Meander RIP Three members (Mr Catchpole and the Bicker Twins) did the Thames Meander earlier year and we've all three been recommending it as a fantastic way to explore the 54 miles of towpath from Reading into London.  Sadly, we've just received an e-mail announcing that

"the Thames Meander will not be taking place again. The fame and success of our event has made it increasingly time-consuming to organise and [the organiser and his family] no longer have the time or resources to manage its growth.
The 10 years of the Thames Meander has been a great period for us; we are all very proud of growing and developing the event from 10 people to its current position as the largest double marathon in Europe.
Along the way a number of other events have started up and copied our course, format and timings, but remember - the Thames Meander is still the first and the original."

So (Sarah) you've missed your chance! [See www.thamesmeander.com ]

Christmas Social Shindig Reminder that Ross has booked 20 places at the Greyhound for Monday 8th December at 7:00pm (order from menu & pay at bar).  If you want "in", please contact Ross by mobile 0773 6322 776 or email. (At time of writing there weren't many places left.)
London marathon As of Sunday 9th November three members had put their names in the hat for any London marathon places that the club may have received (to remind you, the number of club places we get is determined by the number of first claim UK:A members we have; any club place(s) we are allocated is/are awarded by the committee who consider various criteria such as "have you met your commitment to volunteer at club events", "did you actually try to enter but got rejected", "have you had a club place before", "are you first claim").
Simon will announce the outcome at the AGM.

Sit Vac - Framlingham Junior Triathlon Situation STILL vacant - Framlingham Junior Triathlon Race Director
Nobody has yet come forward to take on directing the Framlingham junior event, which means that we may now be unable to run the event in 2009. If you are interested in taking this on, please let Simon know - simon.palmer@talk21.com or at the AGM.

Charity & other local events
Harwich triathlons Edited from letter from organisers

Next years Harwich Triathlons are now open for entries at www.harwichrunners.co.uk/triathlon

The Sprint event will be on Saturday 20th June. Starting at 16:00    Entry is £22 (+£3 for day licence) which includes a hog-roast meal after the event.

The Olympic event (with a sea swim) will be on Sunday 21st June. Starting at 10:30   Entry is £30 (+£3 for day licence).

The run route for Saturday has been changed this year to bring the finish nearer to the centre of the action. It will still be 5k (4.85k to be exact).

There will be live commentary for both days to add to the atmosphere.

We expect to fill both event quite quickly so if your members would like to compete I would recommend that they enter sooner rather than later.

7th December 08 Woodbridge (Sutton Village Hall) * Note new venue*

Fritton Lake Triathlon   Edited from letter from organisers:

Dear All

I am sure you are looking ahead to next years events and planning which races you will include in your season and I hope that you will consider entering the
 Fritton Lake Triathlon .

The event next year will be held on the 6th and 7th June.   We are looking to grow the event next year and in trying to keep the same relaxed friendly environment we have decided to extend the event over 2 days with the Super Sprint on Saturday afternoon and the Olympic/ Standard distance on the Sunday morning. Details at www.fritton-lake-triathlon.co.uk .

Once again we will be featuring a Super Sprint race with a 400m swim – 20km bike – 3km run This is an ideal introduction to open water racing or as a warm up event leading to your main races. Enter on line at www.entrycentral.com/index.php?raceID=100187 .

If you are up for a greater challenge then why not enter the Olympic/ Standard distance race, which once again will feature the uncompromising challenge of the 10k cross country run around the lake.  The level of the challenge is very much weather dependant and ranges from plain tough if the weather has been dry to extreme if the weather has been wet (many have lost shoes in the most boggy sections).  This run is not the standard pavement trudge where your race memories blur across a wide range of similar events - once you complete this run you will always remember it no matter how many other events you do. Enter on line at www.entrycentral.com/index.php?raceID=100126 .

Next year will also see a wide range of support activities and events at Fritton Lake including open water swimming sessions, training days a midweek Aquathlon series and a winter “Dirty Duathlon” later in 2009.  Keep an eye out for more information on these as they develop.

I look forward to welcoming you back next year and seeing you soon.

Kind Regards

Simon

Another ITCH... Yes - there is another ITCH.

The British Computer Society's "social inclusion executive" runs an ITCH Network, where ITCH stands for "Information Technology Can Help".

The purpose of the BCS's ITCH is to offer computer assistance to individuals with disabilities by providing volunteers who will visit disabled people in their homes and at other locations such as day centres.

If you are interested see www.itcanhelp.org.uk

Calendar of events
This is just a small selection of events, mainly those eligible for the ITCH league or ones which have come my way.

You should look at sites such as www.britishtriathlon.org and www.ebta.co.uk for triathlons, and for local running events, see http://www.suffolkathletics.org.uk/ - most members are eligible to enter for "county championship" events. (Remember to tick the box, and to wear your club kit.  We have had quite a few age group podium places over the years - especially in the longer events. We also usually do fairly well as a team in both the cross-country and Friday Five series.)

Events which are eligible for the ITCH league are followed by an "ITCH" number, which is the weighting or tariff for that event in the league.

Recordings of IMUK 2006 & IMUK70.3 2006 - I don't suppose anybody has these?  Our home-recorded DVD has got corrupted.  charlie@stannett.com

Have you seen...
Channel 4 showed IMUK on a Saturday morning. We spotted former member Sue Rule running through the streets, as well as spotting some familiar red & black cheering in the last lady to finish.  You might be able to find it on http://www.channel4.com/4od/ and good luck!

Nik Bestow has suggested this slight modification to the Culford route...

Puddle? What puddle...

Race director Dave Copland is considering it!
