ITCH December 2008 - banner

Welcome to ITCH - the Ipswich triathlon club hand-out - for December 2008.

Ellie Wright holds her medal as TriStar 1 (age 9-10) club champ
AGM presentations - Ellie Wright received the medal for becoming TriStar 1 (age 9-10) club champion.

It was great to see so many faces at the AGM and again at the Christmas "do" which Ross organised.

The formal business of the AGM included the election of a new committee for 2009, including a new Chair Mary Skelcher. Mary introduces herself below.  But the real highlight was the presentation of the club championship medals and trophies - congratulations to everybody.

This is the last ITCH for 2008 but not my last ITCH - it might be a new committee but it has some old faces.  Following the elections at the AGM, the committee going into 2009 becomes:

Subscriptions for 2009 are due in January - subscriptions remain as now, viz. family £20, senior £15, junior £5. Click here to download an 2009 membership application form.
People who renew on time - i.e. before the end of January 2009 - and who enclose an SAE will be sent a club kit discount voucher (£5 for seniors, £10 for family). (See below for details of how the club kit discount will operate in 2009.)

Club events for 2009 - you will have seen from the website that dates have now been announced for our three events for 2009:

  • Culford 26th July - further information will be available from the early spring
  • Junior 23rd August - this is a week earlier than usual and still very much to be confirmed
  • Duathlon 20th September

Please remember that the your membership subscription includes volunteering for at least one of these events - and for 2009 the expectation will be that you volunteer for the race day itself.  If you want to compete in a particular event then, in theory, you can provide a substitute volunteer but do not be surprised if you are press-ganged into service if your substitute volunteer fails to appear.

Santa shows the way...

Also, in the case of Culford we really do want to give new members and non-members first crack at the race places so if you've done it before please think twice about entering.

Meanwhile...

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Chair's Chat

Mary Skelcher in action at Dovercourt...
Mary in action at Dovercourt.....

Our new Chair is Mary Skelcher

Welcome from your new Chair, Mary Skelcher.

First of all, my thanks to Nick Collinson and the rest of the outgoing committee who leave the Tri Club in an excellent position. Thanks also to those returning committee members who have agreed to sacrifice some of their precious training time for yet another year.

2008 was a great year for Ipswich Tri Club, with some outstanding individual performances and increased numbers of people taking part in events. The club also continues to benefit from a strong financial position.

In order to take the club forward, I'd like to hear your views and suggestions. What do you want from your Tri Club? Catch me at Greshams on Thursday for the run session (or in the bar afterwards). I'm usually at Wolvestone for Saturday swimming or, if not in person, you can e-mail me at chair@ipswich-tri.org

Happy Christmas and all the best for a triathletic 2009.

Mary can be contacted by e-mail to chair@ipswich-tri.org

Pyrenees camp

Ipswich Triathlon Club Training Camp – 18-25th April 2009

You are reminded of the training camp which Susannah Rosenberg has been arranging.
See November's ITCH for details.

Thursdays
Club sessions (usually) at Greshams, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich

The emphasis on Thursday evenings is social rather than structured coaching. However, there are changing facilities and showers at Greshams and quite a few members use this as an opportunity to train with colleagues - of varying abilities. If you want to join the folks who go out for training, then come in time to change and be ready for a 7:00pm start.  Otherwise, they tend to head into the club bar for a beer and some food from about 8:00pm onwards.

Dec 25 No run.
Jan 1 Dales Road Hangover Cure
Meet at 12:00 noon at 83 Christchurch Street
Jan 8 Finn Valley Head Torch
Five miles cross-country under the full moon
Jan 15 Big John's Speed Session.
It’s hard, it’s fast and John is the boss
Jan 22 Valley Road Hills
The hills are alive with the sound of hamstrings
Jan 29 Shell Garage Run – four miles on pavement.
Feb 5 Fynn Valley Head Torch
Five miles cross-country under the full moon

If you are staying on after training, can you please bring suitable clothing to change into - some of the other customers are not too keen on seeing people dressed in sweaty lycra in the bar. The showers are (usually) very good.

Saturdays

Saturday morning swimming is held at the girls school in Woolverstone & costs £4 (under review).   The dates for your diaries for are:

January 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st (Jan 3rd is cancelled)

April 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th

Remember to arrive in good time to be changed and in the pool by 9:00 am sharp for a good workout.  The pool session guillotines at 10:00.

The last swim session of 2008 (13th December) included a timed 1500m benchmarking session.

ITCH league

At the time of writing, I've not had masses of requests to change the list of events so, subject to one small caveat, I am minded to keep the same fixtures for 2009, assuming they are on and club members enter them. (I've not heard anything about Wattisham - have you?)

The caveat involves London. I cannot personally compete in London in 2009 so have no easy way of knowing who has actually raced.  So, if you want London's Sunday events to stay in the league, I shall have to insist on people letting me know that they have entered and raced. It is particularly fiddly working out figures for London so once I have processed the results that will be it - I shan't add people after the event so to speak.

I am also going to simplify the tariff system.  For historical reasons the score for a "reference" performance is one-half the tariff.  For example the tariff for an Ironman is 200 but the reference is 100.  All I shall do is half the tariff and not divide by two. So your scores will be exactly the same, which means you can still use the league to monitor your improvement.

Further changes to kit arrangements

Junior kit
- Adrian Green looks after the distribution of junior kit so, for smaller sizes, please contact Adrian direct
on 01379 388855 or e-mail: juniors@ipswich-tri.org .

Senior kit - John Wankowski has now taken over distribution of all other kit from Heather Collinson.  E-mail orders to kit@ipswich-tri.org or catch John at club nights.

We have had to introduce "payment with order" as one or two members have let the side down by not paying up promptly.

Kit voucher scheme - as announced at the AGM, the subsidy on club kit will now be handled by means of a voucher scheme.
Up to now the club has, in effect, sold club kit to members at a loss.  From the beginning of 2009, kit will be sold to members at cost.
However, every member who renews their membership on time will receive a voucher worth £5 against any kit purchase; new members will receive vouchers worth £10.  Race directors are also able to give £5 kit vouchers to members as they fulfil their volunteer obligation (so if you help out at two events, you will get two vouchers).

Crusaid - HIV & AIDS: help & hope for people in poverty
Flora London Marathon
As announced by Simon Palmer at the AGM, the club qualified for three places in the 2009 running of the Flora London Marathon. By coincidence just three members asked for places, which duly went to William Catchpole, Sue Hargadon and Charlie Stannett.  Simon stressed that these are club places and so invites any late deciders to go on a "reserve" list just in case any of the "lucky" three have to drop out.

Charlie will be using his place to help raise money for Crusaid, which is a "UK charity dedicated to helping poor and marginalised people affected by HIV and AIDS."

If you are feeling charitable, please sponsor Charlie via his justgiving page - visit www.justgiving.com/crusaiders

Framlingham Junior Triathlon Framlingham Junior Triathlon Race Director
Well done to Matt Dye who came forward at the AGM to take on the role of event director.  You can offer your services to Matt by e-mail to juniortri@ipswich-tri.org

Da Vinci's picture of the perfect human specimen... Vitruvian - based on conversation at the Christmas shindig (thanks for organising this Ross), it looks like there could be another big club turn-out for the 2009 Vitruvian, on Saturday 5th September.

Entries are now open at http://www.pacesetterevents.com/ but it will cost you the better part of one hundred english pounds.

Also - some of us have already found local B&B pubs are filling up because of a clash with Burleigh (horses) week, although we were able to book into Travelodge Uppingham Morcott which is about six miles away.

Ironman have given their M-dot the Christmas treatment... Ironman UK - just in case you were thinking of popping down to Dorset next year, think again.  The Ironman UK has moved. To Bolton. That's Bolton as in Bolton Wanderers, Greater Manchester, and elephants.

And they have also moved the date, to August 2nd. This means it no longer clashes with the Vitruvian (good) but does clash with London (bad).

If you want to enter, visit http://iron.ironmanuk.com but you might want to talk to your bank manager first. But don't hang around too long - it looked like over 80 per cent of places went within a week of opening.

triathlonengland.org
Coaching courses - Ceri Winter (Regional Development Manager, Triathlon England East)  warns:

There are still a few places left on the up and coming Level 1 on the 10th, 11th and 24th January, if you would like a place please send me [an] application form complete with payment.

I have already had to cancel one course this year and if I have to cancel another I can therefore assume the courses are not needed and therefore it is possible the next one won’t be until September 09.

For further information see the triathlon:england website - www.triathlonengland.org

Charity & other local events
Cross-country Reminder - dates and venues for remaining events in the winter series:

18th January 09 Framlingham (note changed date)
1st February 09 Stowmarket (Haughley Park)

Simon Palmer normally attends all events and collects the moneys & finish-place tickets on the day. Wear club kit!

The SCAA championships will be at Haughley Park on January 11th. As you will know if you read your e-mail, the closing date for entries has now passed but do please come and give support if you are in the vicinity, which is only a short cycle ride from Ipswich.
For further details visit the SCAA website http://www.suffolkathletics.org.uk/

Calendar of events
This is just a small selection of events, mainly those eligible for the ITCH league or ones which have come my way.

You should look at sites such as www.britishtriathlon.org and www.ebta.co.uk for triathlons, and for local running events, see http://www.suffolkathletics.org.uk/ - most members are eligible to enter for "county championship" events. (Remember to tick the box, and to wear your club kit.  We have had quite a few age group podium places over the years - especially in the longer events. We also usually do fairly well as a team in both the cross-country and Friday Five series.)

Events which are eligible for the ITCH league are followed by an "ITCH" number, which is the weighting or tariff for that event in the league.
