ITCH - the Ipswich triathlon club hand-out

Welcome to ITCH - the Ipswich triathlon club hand-out - for January 2009...

...and welcome (back) to the club for 2009.

Notices you may have missed:

A final reminder - subscriptions for 2009 were due by today, 31st January - subscriptions remain as now, viz. family £20, senior £15, junior £5. Click here to download an 2009 membership application form.

Club events for 2009 - you will have seen from the website that dates have now been announced for our three events for 2009:

  • Culford 26th July - further information will be available from the early spring
  • Junior 23rd August - this is a week earlier than usual and has actually already opened for entries at  http://www.entrycentral.com/index.php?festivalID=28
  • Duathlon 20th September

Please remember that the your membership subscription includes volunteering for at least one of these events - and for 2009 the expectation will be that you volunteer for the race day itself.  If you want to compete in a particular event then, in theory, you can provide a substitute volunteer but do not be surprised if you are press-ganged into service if your substitute volunteer fails to appear.

Club championship - the committee has agreed once more to adopt the Norwich "olympic" triathlon, on Sunday 5th July, as the decider for our club championships. Entries are already open - see http://www.tri-anglia.co.uk/NorwichTriathlon/ for further details. If you enter, make sure you enter the "olympic" (or "standard" distance) event and not the shorter "sprint" event, and make sure you enter for "Ipswich triathlon club" to avoid confusion with Ipswich bike club, Ipswich Harriers, Ipswich JAFFA etc

The ITCH league has now also been finalised for 2009 - more later.

Club kit - the price lists shown on the website are the 2006 price lists - the prices shown reflect an item-by-item discount.  From 2009, kit will be charged at full cost but, at the moment, the 2009 costs are not yet known - apart from anything else our manufacturer is in the Eurozone.
However, members are able to "earn" discount vouchers which can be saved and used to offset the price of any club kit which they buy. Those of you who renewed on time should have received your first voucher.

Reminder - who's who for 2009

Welton gives it some welly...
Men's captain Ross Welton on the road...

Watch out Barack - Ross is after your job...

...to the White House?

Our new men's captain is Ross Welton

There’s a new man in the White House and perhaps more importantly a new man in the Captains corner hot seat!

Importantly both the Barack and I are about the same thing.......CHANGE. This is the year people, the year for improvement, the year for PB’s, the year for pushing that bit harder all for the love of Triathlon.

Looking around the Club we have a huge number of experienced members of all abilities. I think it would be great if we can use each other as a means of improving. Already we have seen a bit more structure to the Thursday night run sessions. Whilst still an excellent social outing, the sessions have a focus designed to ooze out some improvement. The same is true of the Saturday swims.

So why not get involved this year in some more club sessions, challenge yourself to take part in your first race, beat that PB or just get round. Lets enjoy the season, improve, yes we can!

Ross, who was "feeling a bit political" when he wrote this, can be contacted by e-mail to ross@ipswich-tri.org

Suffolk County Athletics Association

Did you know we were affiliated to UK:A via SCAA?

SCAA Cross country county championships

Our thanks go to Dave Copland, who co-ordinated our entry into the SCAA (Suffolk County Athletics Association). Dave reports:

I think we can congratulate ourselves on a respectable performance for the club. I don't know how the women's race started but the men's was ridiculously fast for the first 1 or 2 km before people settled down a bit.

I've put a few photos on http://picasaweb.google.com/DaveCopland/ - feel free to download and use as you wish. If you want higher resolution copies I can supply them on request.

Mary definitely wins the Big Hair award and there's even a pic of Charlie with both feet off the ground. And will whoever stole John W's recovery drink from the finish line please return it before he gets *really* cross.

Special mentions go to:

  • John Moody for his first race ever.
  • Neil Catling in his first race for the club (that's correct, isn't it?)
  • Joe Goddard who was due to return to Loughborough the day before, until he learned (also the day before) that he'd been entered into the championship.

Cheers, Dave

Club sessions - Thursday nights, Saturday mornings & ad hoc
Thursdays
Club sessions at Greshams, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich

The emphasis on Thursday evenings is social rather than structured coaching. However, there are changing facilities and showers at Greshams and quite a few members use this as an opportunity to train with colleagues - of varying abilities. If you want to join the folks who go out for training, then come in time to change and be ready for a 7:00pm start.  Otherwise, they tend to head into the club bar for a beer and some food from about 8:00pm onwards.

Feb 5 Big John's speed session - NOT the Fynn Valley Head Torch session, which is now...
Feb 12 Fynn Valley Head Torch session ...
Five miles cross-country under the moon
Feb 19 Dales Road run
Feb 26 Derrick's surprise run
Mar 5 Rusty's hill session

If you are staying on after training, can you please bring suitable clothing to change into - some of the other customers are not too keen on seeing people dressed in sweaty lycra in the bar. The showers are (usually) very good.

Saturdays

Saturday morning swimming is held at the girls school in Woolverstone & costs £4 (under review).   The dates for your diaries for are:

February 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th

Kit arrangements

Junior kit
- Adrian Green has been looking after the distribution of junior kit so, for smaller sizes, please contact Adrian direct
on 01379 388855 or e-mail via Isabel: juniors@ipswich-tri.org .

Senior kit - John Wankowski has now taken over distribution of all other kit from Heather Collinson.  E-mail orders to kit@ipswich-tri.org or catch John at club nights.

We have had to introduce "payment with order" as one or two members have let the side down by not paying up promptly.

Kit voucher scheme - as announced at the AGM, the subsidy on club kit will now be handled by means of a voucher scheme.
Up to now the club has, in effect, sold club kit to members at a loss.  From the beginning of 2009, kit will be sold to members at cost.
However, every member who renews their membership on time will receive a voucher worth £5 against any kit purchase; new members will receive vouchers worth £10.  Race directors are also able to give £5 kit vouchers to members as they fulfil their volunteer obligation (so if you help out at two events, you will get two vouchers).

Charity & other local events
Lode 'Muddy Marvel' 5

Lode Muddy Marvel Five

Our friends in Newmarket Cycling & Triathlon Club have told us about the Lode "Muddy Marvel" charity run:

The run will take place in Lode, on 15th March 2009.
Last time we managed to raise £1,000 for Cambridge Mencap, this time we are raising money for Cam-mind.
www.cam-mind.org.uk

For more information look at their website: www.newmarketcyclingtriathlon.co.uk

Calendar of events

This is just a small selection of events, mainly those eligible for the ITCH league or ones which have come my way.

You should look at sites such as www.britishtriathlon.org and www.ebta.co.uk for triathlons, and for local running events, see www.suffolkathletics.org.uk - most members are eligible to enter for "county championship" events. (Remember to tick the box, and to wear your club kit.  We have had quite a few age group podium places over the years - especially in the longer events. We also usually do fairly well as a team in both the cross-country and Friday Five series.)

Events which are eligible for the ITCH league are followed by an "ITCH" number, which is the weighting or tariff for that event in the league.

Have you seen...
In case you're still reeling at Ross's barracking (geddit?) you might feel better to read about somebody else facing the same issues:

"I haven't done any interval work yet, or any specific time-trial work. As I start to lose one kilo, and then another, and I get down to the proper weight, I should be going fast."

You can read the full article on the Telegraph's website  - it was about Lance Armstrong.

ITCH - the Ipswich Triathlon Club Handout - is our mostly monthly newsletter. It is designed primarily for reading on-line but paper copies can be sent to members who genuinely have no access to the internet.
Articles are welcomed from all members - e-mail them to itch@ipswich-tri.org or send them in the post to
Charlie Stannett, Red Lion Cottage, East Bergholt, CO7 6TB.
