ITCH - the Ipswich triathlon club hand-out

Welcome to ITCH - the Ipswich triathlon club hand-out - for February 2009...

Notices you may have missed:

Culford (26th July) has opened - you will have seen from the website that Culford was due to open at 6am on Thursday 26th February 2009. It did open on time and, ten hours later, was already over 60% full. You might still be able to enter on-line at http://www.entrycentral.net/index.php?raceID=100027 but get your skates on - as of today (28th Feb) 187 places had been taken out of the 200 available.

(The Junior, on 23rd August, still had loads of places - see http://www.entrycentral.com/index.php?festivalID=28 - whereas the Duathlon on 20th September has still yet to open.)

Please remember that the your membership subscription includes volunteering for at least one of these events, and that Culford cannot count toward the ITCH league if you've raced it before.

Club kit - the price lists shown on the website are the 2006 price lists - the prices shown reflect an item-by-item discount - but you are able to "earn" discount vouchers which can be saved and used to offset the price of any club kit which they buy. Our former UK supplier has withdrawn from the market but our kit man John Wankowski has been able to place orders direct with the factory in Belgium. John has been told that the first direct order is on its way to Ipswich - and he will use the current Euro exchange rate to fix prices for the rest of the year.

Scouting for girls - Kate says "dib dib dib ... be prepared"

Kate puncture-proofs her wetsuit...
Ladies captain Kate Stannett.

Our ladies captain is Kate Stannett

On February 10th 1774 Andrew Becker demonstrated his practical diving suit in the River Thames.

This little gem of information has reminded me that at the end of last season's racing I had developed a small hole in my wetsuit.

So my "top tip" for this month is to rootle out your neoprene-repair kit - or find a rich sponsor & get a new suit!

Kate can be contacted by e-mail to kate@ipswich-tri.org

(One wet suit repair website claims "if your divorcee partner takes a Stanley knife to your pride and joy we can stick it back together in a professional manner; yes we have done this repair more than once!")

ICA Time Trial series championships

Susannah goes so fast she experiences Doppler shift...

On Boxing Day 2008, Susannah Rosenberg was presented with the Ladies Champion's shield for the Ipswich Cycling Association 10 mile time trial series in summer 2008. The championship is awarded to the rider who gains the most points from 10 of the 18 time trials in the series. Anyone can ride in the time trials but the championship is only open to members of the ICA clubs, so Susannah rides them for Ipswich Bicycle Club.

Next year's series starts on Wednesday 15th April, 2009 and continues over the subsequent 17 Wednesdays. Races are at Battisford, Crowfield and Henley. Full details at http://www.ipswichbicycleclub.co.uk/ (click Events).

Susannah is pictured above with Andrew Leggett, the senior men's champion. Dave Copland also received a (much smaller) shield as 2nd placed veteran.

Suffolk County Athletics Association Cross-country Suffolk winter series

I haven't received any race reports for the final event but full results are available at http://www.raceres.org.uk/ - as far as I can make out we came ninth overall out of 19 eligible teams placed. Well done to everybody who turned out on some very cold, miserable days!

have a banana...
Great Bentley Half Marathon - 9th February 2009

All I remember about this race was that it was very cold and very bleak, but the banana at the end was really nice!

...washed down with some beer

Elgood's Brewery Great East Run (20km) - 15th February 2009 - Charlie Stannett

See www.greateastrun.org.uk for a full report, including:

"The tenth running of the Elgood's Brewery Great East Run took place on Sunday 15th February, in cool conditions with occasional drizzle and a moderate breeze. For the first time, electronic timing chips were used. These greatly reduced the amount of help needed at the finish and enabled the times to be collated in a matter of minutes. The announcement of the results of the early finishers could be made whilst the later finishers were still running. Chairman of the race committee Roland Shaw said the Race Timing Systems technology was a success and would be used for the club's biggest event in the racing calendar, the Bungay Marathon, which takes place on April 19. All finishers, helpers and marshals received an excellent goody bag, and a bespoke Black Dog medal together with a welcome bottle of Elgoods award winning ale, appropriately named Black Dog Mild. Free hot soup was also provided for all runners."

We did indeed receive a bottle of beer and soup, all of which was excellent (even the odd inclusion in the goody bag of a skipping rope and a leaflet about giving up smoking), but it wasn't clear to me that timing mats were used for the start of the race. Not so criticaI for me as I had decided to use the race as a "pace judgment" exercise, and so would rely on my watch. Indeed I found myself running for most of the first half with TriAnglia's Stuart Ingram who had also decided to use it as pace-judgement training and had his watch set up as well. In fact we seemed to be surrounded by triathletes doing something similar - we were the ones all wearing warm clothing - but we hooked up with a former cyclist who helped pass the time by telling us how he used to train for time-trials.

I eventually finished in 109:54 by my watch which is nowhere near my PB but was absolutely bang on for what I was trying to do on the day, which was to finish relatively fresh and in 110 minutes.

I stayed on to see the cyclist finish - and he came in at something like 2:00:22 by the race clock. Note the 22 seconds: this is where the use of timing mats at the start can be critical.

The mystery cyclist had told us that his wife had promised him a good time (well, take him out for dinner) if he broke two hours - and I know I had taken something like 30 seconds to cross the start line!

Club sessions - Thursday nights, Saturday mornings & ad hoc
Thursdays
Club sessions at Greshams, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich

The emphasis on Thursday evenings is social rather than structured coaching. However, there are changing facilities and showers at Greshams and quite a few members use this as an opportunity to train with colleagues - of varying abilities. If you want to join the folks who go out for training, then come in time to change and be ready for a 7:00pm start.  Otherwise, they tend to head into the club bar for a beer and some food from about 8:00pm onwards.

Mar 5 Rusty's hill session
Mar 12 Fynn Valley Head Torch session ...
Five miles cross-country - 3rd time lucky for a full moon after fog & snow on last two occasions
Mar 19 Valley Road hill session (400m hill repeats)
Mar 26 Shell Garage run (4.5 mile flat run)
Apr 2 Big John's speed session - flat intervals

If you are staying on after training, can you please bring suitable clothing to change into - some of the other customers are not too keen on seeing people dressed in sweaty lycra in the bar. The showers are (usually) very good.

Other news & club notices

Swim coaching special

Following a suggestion made at the AGM, the committee has agreed to try and set up a special coached swimming session.

This is still being organised but the proposal is to bring in a "name" coach for a full day's session - probably a Sunday - with places being offered on a "first-come, first-serve" basis. The price to participants is likely to be of the order of £50 - watch this space.

Charity & other local events
Eastern Region Club Relay Champs Adam Ramsey has alerted us to the Eastern Region Club Relay Champs which take place at Gosfield Lake on 12 Jul 2009 and wonders whether the club could get a team (or two) together. The race is for teams of three with all members taking part in all three disciplines one after the other - i.e. 3 x swim, 3 x bike 3 x run.

Unfortunately half the committee are tied up with Ironmans and things that weekend but does anybody else want to coordinate a team entry? If so, please let Adam or me know by e-mailing itch@ipswich-tri.org .

Meanwhile, see https://www.entrycentral.com/index.php?raceID=100487 for further information.

Calendar of events

This is just a small selection of events, mainly those eligible for the ITCH league or ones which have come my way.

You should look at sites such as www.britishtriathlon.org and www.ebta.co.uk for triathlons, and for local running events, see www.suffolkathletics.org.uk - most members are eligible to enter for "county championship" events. (Remember to tick the box, and to wear your club kit.  We have had quite a few age group podium places over the years - especially in the longer events. We also usually do fairly well as a team in both the cross-country and Friday Five series.)

Events which are eligible for the ITCH league are followed by an "ITCH" number, which is the weighting or tariff for that event in the league.
