ITCH - the Ipswich triathlon club hand-out

Welcome to the Ipswich triathlon club handout.

Club news - April 2010

O
ur own events

Culford, on 25th July, is FULL, with a waiting list in operation.

Entries remain open for the Junior triathlon on 29th August for 9-16 year olds. There is a waiting list for 8 year olds.

The date of the Duathlon, originally 26th September, has been brought forward by one week - to 19th September - to avoid clashing with the Clacton triathlon weekend. Nik Bestow will be contacting all members who nominated the duathlon as their "volunteer" event but if you already know you have a problem with the new date please contact him.

The 2010 Ipswich Cycling Association evening cycling time trial series, organised in part by Ipswich triathlon club, are open to members of associated clubs only. See http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tim.m.butler/ or contact antony.birt1@btinternet.com

The ITCH League 2010 - final line-up

As announced last month, the league now includes the Swashbuckler middle-distance triathlon, but I am dropping the Merchant Taylor event which attracted little interest among club members.

However, now that the duathlon has been moved to 19th September, I shall include both the Clacton off-road SPRINT triathlon on 25th September and the Clacton STANDARD triathlon on 26th September. These both feature an open water sea swim and, as of 30th April, had places available.

See http://www.entrycentral.com/index.php?festivalID=100 for details - including details of the prize available for people who do the "double".

The updated league information is at http://ipswich-tri.org/JOIN/itch-league/itch-league-2010-info.htm .

The Club Championship 2010 - Cambridge

Reminder: the event we have chosen as the decider for our 2010 club championships is the Cambridge Triathlon.

Cambridge Triathlon is now open for entries and, as of April 30th, there were just 65 places remaining, with only 13 members currently shown as having entered.
See http://www.cambridgetriathlonclub.com/ for current news and a "hot spot" link to the on-line entry pages, which takes you to http://www.howesplace.com/ctc/ctc_entry.php . Please identify your club as "Ipswich triathlon club", not just "Ipswich".

Chairman’s chat

Our Chairman, Mary Skelcher
Mary Skelcher

Welcome

This month sees a new set of swim coaching sessions, led by our own Level 3 Swim Coach, Isabel Smith. You’ll pay the same as a normal Saturday swim, AND receive coaching.

Isabel had originally planned to run the sessions from 24th April but as this clashed with Wattisham, she is now offering coaching to Saturday morning sessioners every fortnight, starting May 2nd, until June 12th.

Although these are open to all, please contact Isabel if you're interested so she can plan accordingly.  Contact Isabel be e-mail to sport@sinkfarm.com or phone her on 07970 937899. Depending on numbers, Isabel will need one or two of the lanes but the rest of the pool remains available for people who want to do their usual sessions.

The Great East Swim is rapidly approaching; this year it will be held on Sat 19th June and we’ll be looking for volunteers to man a stand promoting the Club.

Please e-mail me chair@ipswichtri.org if you can help out.

All the best
Mary

Mary can contacted by e-mail to chair@ipswich-tri.org or on committee meeting evenings.

The committee normally meets at Greshams on the SECOND Thursday of each month.

Kate Stannett...

Ladies captain Kate Stannett extols time-trialling...

This is by way of a race report.

After many years of "suggestion" by Dave Copland and others, I've finally had a go at the Wednesday time-trials which Ant has hooked us into.

I have to admit that I've not found it easy, with some of the biking specialists being more than just a little bit intimidating and stand-offish.

That said, I think the effort has been worth it. I really do feel that after only a couple of outings I'm already gaining some benefit, better able to work harder on the bike generally.

Unfortunately my bike has had to go into hospital - I've worked it too hard - but time-trials are being written into the schedule as a regular feature for the summer.

I do urge more of you to come out and give it a go.

Pip-pip. Kate

Kate questions ...

Odd-looking bike...
Elvis

Athlete of the month for April is Wendy Quantrill

How did you get into triathlon?

Meeting Lucy Bowditch at the gym... her enthusiasm inspired me to give it a go!

What is your main motivation and/or inspiration?

Getting pbs.... without the clock ticking I’d probably sit around eating chocolate all day...

What does your family think about you & triathlon?

They think anyone who can do a single triathlon is amazing. I think it’s easy to lose sight of this fact; that 99% of the population would struggle to complete a sprint triathlon.

Picking up the age group at WaveneyWhat has been your happiest sporting moment?

There are three (well this is triathlon!): running 21:11 for 5k at Harwich, winning my age group at the Waveney Triathlon and completing my first Olympic distance at Norwich.

And what about your worst?

The London Triathlon 2008. I swallowed lots of air during the swim, this all got trapped while aero on the bike and I had crippling stomach cramps on the run meaning I had to walk. I was full of energy too so it was completely gutting to have to shuffle for 10k in front of loads of spectators. A dent to my pride!

How much training do you do fit in (on each discipline)?

On a good week I’ll do 2 sessions of each.

What is your favourite training session?

Running along the boardwalk at Pacific Beach in San Diego. Heaven!

Apart from triathlon, what are your other obsessions?

Horse riding. I currently loan a horse called Elvis and he’s gorgeous.

How do you indulge yourself on a rest day?

Not exactly indulgences but when I’m not training I’m juggling my business, house work and my little girl who’ll be seven next month.

What are your plans for the near future?

Lunch at the Beagle in 3 hours time...

Tell me about your bike

She’s a celeste Bianchi  with gorgeous Sirocco wheels and I love her!

...that's better, but not sure about the set-up...

Anybody you especially want to hear about? Tell Kate - she can be contacted by e-mail to kate@ipswich-tri.org

Mud Sweat and Gears - Isabel Smith

Reminder that there is a summer league for the juniors/adults to get their teeth into off road this summer.

The sessions run monthly starting in Tunstall and finishing in Hyland’s Park Chelmsford. They take  place on a monthly basis starting in May and finishing in October. They start at a reasonable entry price of £4 for the 12’s rising in each age category.

  • May 2nd Tunstall

  • June 13th Thetford Forest

  • July 18th Danbury outdoors

  • Aug 15th Codham Park Braintree

  • Sept 19th Langdon Hills Thurrock

  • Oct 10th Hyland’s Park Chelmsford

It is good practice to be able to improve your cycle riding skill off road where you can speed with less chance of harm.

Isabel - 22 March 2010

Club sessions - Thursday nights, Saturday mornings, ...

Thursday evenings

Club sessions at Greshams, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich

29th Apr - Christchurch Park hills
6th May - Fynn Valley

Please watch out for e-mails/Twitter updates about forth-coming Thursday sessions.

The emphasis on Thursday evenings is social rather than structured coaching. However, there are changing facilities and showers at Greshams and quite a few members use this as an opportunity to train with colleagues - of varying abilities. If you want to join the folks who go out for training, then come in time to change and be ready for a 7:00pm start.  Otherwise, they tend to head into the club bar for a beer and some food from about 8:00pm onwards.

If you are staying on after training, can you please bring suitable clothing to change into - some of the other customers are not too keen on seeing people dressed in sweaty lycra in the bar.

Saturday mornings

Saturday morning pool swimming (at
the girls school in Woolverstone) is with us until July 17th 2010.

Time is as before (9am - 10am) and we might need to cancel the odd date if it clashes with a race. Also, if you know of life guards who could be called upon as necessary, could you let Greg know.

Please note that on some occasions we will be reserving one or two lane for use in coaching.

If you want to be on a ring round list for notification of changes at short notice then let Greg Allen have your number. Greg is on 07501 464143 or e-mail greg.jamie@talktalk.net

Junior swim training

Wednesday evenings at Eyke Pool (IP12 2QW); 5:00 - 6:30. Contact Isabel via juniors@ipswich-tri.org or on 01394-460288/07970-937899

Open water swim sessions
Tuesday eve & Saturday am

Open water swimming discontinued for the winter months but we have been offered the same private facility (south of Ipswich) for 2010 so watch this space.

Club chair Mary is trying to set up alternative/additional open water swimming further north.

For further information about swimming arrangements, contact Greg Allen on 07501 464143 or e-mail greg.jamie@talktalk.net

Is winning habit-forming?
Leading lady Lucy, London last year...

Wattisham triathlon - Saturday 24th April

Again I've no full report from Wattisham but a check on the website shows that trophies were won by Lucy Bowditch (first lady overall) and Dave Copland (age group winner).

Ipswich triathlon club (Dave, Mark Bowditch & Steve dB) also won "first team civilian" - with a combined time which beat the "first team military", so I guess that makes Ipswich the winners overall.

Excellent - and well done one & all!

Well done also to Dave Coley, who overcame some coaching down the pub the previous evening to go out and race in first triathlon. Dave was third in his age group, a strong run putting him only fractionally behind former club stalwart Grayhame Fish!

Wattisham is the first event to earn points in this year's ITCH league - these are shown below.

What I'd give for a jelly baby right now...
Is this happy person really the same man who wrote this...

Virgin London Marathon - Sunday 25th April - Jason's blog

I had in my mind I was going to be doing an average of 10 minute miling. For the first half of the race I was averaging 09:15. No matter how hard I tried to slow, I found it harder slowing. All was going well, I got to 13 miles in 2hrs 5. Looking at my watch chuffed to bits, knowing I still had energy in the tank. Then it all went downhill after I stupidly took a jelly baby off a kid. Yes he was offering them I didn’t just steal it from his young hands. Well 2 minutes later I was bent over the side of the road being sick. Fluid, jelly babies and all.

I do feel that this marathon was too soon for me, but I thought what the hell I have always wanted a crack. So decided to do it anyway. Reason being too soon is my Ironman plan only has me training up to about 10 miles at the minute (which increases very soon). So the longest run I had actually done prior to the marathon was 18 miles once, and all the rest were 10 milers. So not the ideal training.

With that in mind I was sure to be going for 4-4:30 hours, according to training times.

I did see two Ipswich Tri bods. Just didn’t want to have to start a conversation with anybody so hid. Needed all the energy I could muster.

Well I got to mile 21 on 4 hours. Knowing I would be slightly behind my time I was still happy that I could get under 5 hours. That is when my legs told me to stop and walk. I like a plonker thought “well a couple of minutes walking will be OK, it will be like a recharge”. Bad mistake number two. Trying to get going again to my pace, which had now slowed to 11:00 minute miling was neigh impossible. They just didn’t want to know. I hate to admit it, but I think in total over the last 4 miles I had to walk about 1 of those miles. (Broken up of course). So coupled together with two wee-wee stops, throwing up. I could have got under 5, but hey ho. There’s always next year – Not.

Anyways I got through the line. Not as excited as I was doing the Vitruvian, but really relieved and questioning the Ironman.

What I'd give for a jason baillie right now...I learned quite a few things today- Need to practice taking nutrition; Need to put lubricant in places I never knew; Don’t accept Jelly babies from kids.

Training starts tomorrow for IronMan again – yippee.

Highlights for me – First 13 miles

Lowlights – Later finding out that the caterpillar that overtook me had Princess Beatrice in it.

Simon Meecham            4:00:04 (first marathon)

Andrew McFarland         4:37:03 (first marathon)

Other news & club notices

London marathon club places

We do not know how many club places we'll get for the 2011 Virgin London Maraathon.
However, all things being equal, club places are allocated to first-claim members who enter via the main ballot but get rejected.

The 2011 entry
ballot opens on-line on 4th May. See http://www.virginlondonmarathon.com/  for details.

Website stuff

Search  - I've inserted a "Google Search" button in the left hand margin of the website homepage on a trial basis.

BBC Weather for Ipswich - I've also inserted an "iframe" containing the BBC weather forecast for Ipswich which, from experience with other iframes, might not work with all browsers but does work with IE8 on Windows.

Constructive feedback welcome.
