ITCH - the Ipswich triathlon club hand-out

Welcome to ITCH - the Ipswich triathlon club hand-out - for Spring 2011...

Thursday 31st March 2011
Cut off for next issue: Tue 26th April

In brief...

This year, for the first time, all of our members are on the Internet, which means we can rely more on e-mail or updates via twitter to the club home page to get news circulated.

Club members' information

All new members and members renewing their membership for 2011 should have received a letter (yes, on paper) listing club benefits and expectations, and also providing reference information such as the telephone numbers and e-mail addresses for committee members, race directors and other co-ordinators.

Should you have recycled your letter, you can find the same information on-line. It is sign-posted from the homepage, or you can go direct to http://ipswich-tri.org/JOIN/itc-club-members-info.htm - perhaps bookmark it/add it to your favourites?

Our own events

As you know, one of the conditions of membership is that you provide help - either yourself or a friend - for one of our own events.  The way people have volunteered is looking like leaving us a bit thin on the ground for Culford so if you can offer help there as well as at your original preferred choice, please let me or Dave Copland know.

Also, in consultation with Dave, I am modifying the "league" rules about Culford. At the moment you can only count Culford toward the league if it your first year competing as a club member. What we've discussed is that if you have entered Culford before but want to count it for the league, you can - but only if you provide a Culford volunteer on top of your "normal" volunteering.

Current status on events is:

  • Culford - full, with a waiting list in operation. Culford was full within hours of opening.
  • Framlingham junior triathlon - open, with places in both entry categories. Framlingham is a major component of our junior championships.
  • Ipswich duathlon - Nike Bestow has requested the Alton Water venue for September 18th, and was hoping to open for entries "any day now"

Entries for all of these events are through www.EntryCentral.com

We are also responsible for arranging and marshalling four of the local mid-week time-trials but these are only open to members of affiliated clubs, and on a turn up & pay basis. The next of these is Wednesday 6th April. Further details from Antony Birt or http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tim.m.butler/ (the Ipswich Cycling Association website).

Training sessions

The club information page (see above) outlines the various club sessions. As specific things get organised, these are publicised through twitter, Facebook and e-mail:

Thursday nights at Greshams (from Dave):

10 Mar - Speed session (4 x 1200m intervals + 2k warm up & 2k cool down)
17 Mar - Fynn Valley headtorch run (approx 5 miles off-road; options to cut off 0.75m or add on 1.25m). Bring a headtorch.
24 Mar - Bleep test (how long can you keep up in Greshams car park?)

31 Mar - Dave's House run (approx 5 mile road run)

Sunday morning ride-outs (from Mary:

The next ride will be a Mountain Bike Ride on Sunday 20 March. Meet Rendlesham Forest (Tangham) in car park before main car park barrier. Meet 8.45(ish) for 9am bike off.
Contact: amanda (amandamallett@btinternet.com) or Michelle (chelleyjc@yahoo.co.uk)

The next bike ride will then be on Sunday 10 April, TBC.

Saturday morning swimming continues at Ipswich High School for Girls in Woolverstone. Charlie Stannett (that's me) will resume giving coaching assistance to senior newbies/improvers from April 2nd.

Juniors should contact Isabel to get on to her programme. The next juniors special session at Woolverstone will be the third Saturday of April, but there are intervening sessions available at Eyke.

Club kit - John Wankowski has taken delivery of his latest batch of kit. Please contact him if you have had anything on order to arrange a mutually convenient hand-over. (I've included the list of currently available items below under "small ads".)

ITCH League - current proposal

The list shown below is as it stands on 31st March.

However, as you'll know from the e-mails, I need to prune out a sprint or two. I am monitoring comments on the "Ipswich triathlon club" facebook group - suggestions include replacing one of the sprints (probably Waveney Valley) with either the Speedy Beaver on May 29th or the Cowman on July 3rd, both of which are in the national lists. I would urge any sprint specialists to look at entering the Fritton Lake event on June 11th as this is the regional championship event - see http://www.triathlonenglandeast.org/ .

Any single "long" event [100]
You can submit any single "long" event result but the event must be based on the WTC distances of 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike & 26.2 mile marathon run. Also, you must provide a full set of results in a format that we can use to calculate your points.

Examples:

Committee stuff

didn't we have a lovely day...

Club chairman Simon Palmer
.

Recent committee decisions include:
  • extending the booking of Woolverstone to two hours each week on a trial basis
  • to leave arrangements for Tri-Yoga sessions as they are now, on an ad hoc basis, rather than set up a formal programme
  • Neil Catling will run regular "bleep test" sessions to help people monitor fitness improvement
  • Neil, Derrick Smith and Dave Copland have been okayed to book the "AGM" room at Greshams on an occasional basis for indoor sessions
  • whilst the senior championship remains based on a single event - Cambridge - the junior championship will be changed to encourage greater involvement in taining as well as competing (see fuller information below)
  • we will try to reinstate "sizzlers" (small, informal sessions which mimic triathlons)
  • we have approached a locally based very senior run coach who has agreed in principle to provide us with some assistance, details still to be resolved
  • Antony Birt is being funded to undergo training as a Level 1 coach, to join Charlie Stannett (L1) in supporting Isabel Smith (L2).

The committee normally meets at Greshams on the SECOND Thursday of each month.

Men's captain Neil Catling

How did you get into triathlon?
I started running in January 2008 and John Moody thought it would be a good idea for me to do the Ipswich Duathlon. I wasn’t so sure, but I entered anyway. I enjoyed it so much it led to a triathlon in 2009. I haven’t looked back since.

What is your main motivation and/or inspiration?
My main motivation is just the fact that I really enjoy training, on the other hand I also want to keep getting better.

What does your family think about you & triathlon?
I think they like it as they often come and watch. However probably don’t like that I spend a lot of time training and a fortune on bikes. My mum did her first triathlon this year after coming to one of my events so it’s slowly rubbing off, just the wife to go.

What has been your happiest sporting moment?
Well that’s got to be finishing UK Ironman 70.3. Even if I didn’t get the time I wanted it's one of my happiest.

And what about your worst?
That’s a toss up between Norwich Olympic 2009 (missed half the run route) and Exmoor beast 2009 where my rear mech hanger snapped off. I do not like getting DNF’s.

How much training do you do fit in (on each discipline)?
When I'm in the full swing of training I would normally do around 9 hours on the bike, 2-3 hours running and 1-2 hours swimming a week.

What is your favourite training session?
Well I love being on the bike and the longer the better, I would normally have a run afterwards.

Apart from triathlon, what are your other obsessions?
Family and snooker.

How do you indulge yourself on a rest day?
I either work or spend it with my wife and daughter.

What are your plans for the near future?
I will be doing a few Olympic tri’s, a 70.3 and an Ironman. I’m also going to do more running events.

Tell me about your bike!
Hmm where do I start.... My TT bike is a Planet X frame with full Sram red with a pair of Zipp 808’s. My road bike is a full carbon Claud Butler with Shimano Ultegra 6700 with a pair of mavic wheels. I also have a MTB and a turbo bike.

Isabel Smith

Isabel Smith introduces the process for this year's junior championships.

Junior championships 2011

The aim of the junior championships is to foster active participation in triathlon and in the disciplines which make up triathlon, both in training and in competition.

With this in mind, the championships for 2011 will be decided on a points basis, with points being awarded for participation and performance across the season. The champion for each age group will be the person in that age group with the highest total number of points at the end of the season.

Registration
Because of the need to keep scores, it is imperative that you register in advance with Isabel. Send Isabel an e-mail via juniors@ipswich-tri.org as soon as possible. People registering after April 15th will only receive 90% of available points; no further registrations after May 1st.

Race reports

Louis Breyer - 20, 21 February

Louis Breyer represented Suffolk in the regional finals of the Aviva/UK Athletics Sportshall Competition in February at UEA. Suffolk U13 boys didn't do badly, coming third overall, with Louis contributing with a 4th place in the 6 lap race, 3rd in the obstacles (mini hurdles) relay, and a 6= in the high jump. A fantastic day out.

He then won the U13 in the Essex Cross Country League at Hadleigh the following day, so a busy weekend overall.

Dunmow Duathlon - 5th March 2011 - Russel Breyer

Ipswich Triathlon Club were represented by a superb showing from Dave Copland, who finished in second place in a 200-strong field, and Russel Breyer in a much-improved-on-last-year 43rd place.

Dare we ask where the muddy knees came from?
Solomon & Russel Breyer, and Dave Copland

If you like your runs muddy, and your ride bumpy, then this early season event is the place to come. The setting is fabulous - two 5km runs take you across the heaths and through the wooded glades of the ancient Hatfield Forest. Whilst the runs are muddy, they are also flat, so a fair pace is possible. In between the runs is a 24k cycle ride, the start and end of which is within the National Trust forest boundaries, so vast pot holes, speed bumps, cattle grids, and dog walkers are the order of the day. Once out on the open road, however, the ride becomes an enjoyable short tour of the north Essex countryside. The route is flattish, with a handful of sweeping bends to fire the imagination, although the Essex road surfaces leave a bit to be desired.

The standard of organisation at this event is excellent, with a clear PA system and state-of-the-art chip timing with all race times, including transition periods, more or less instantaneously available to view on a computer screen at the end of the race. Some neat touches, too, with finishers medals, bottled water, bananas, free cycle drinks bottles and a free massage all thrown in. A cafe and proper loos are on hand, so you can make a day out of it if you choose - in fact, if you park in the main car park, you will be boxed in for a fair while so you will be making a day out of it regardless.

why's there never a frankfurter when you want one...

Spring Ballbuster - 5th March 2011 - Chris Tye

The end of Winter training for me is always marked by the infamous Spring Ballbuster, held on the first Saturday of March. This duathlon is held on Box Hill, Surrey and consists of 5 laps of an 8 mile circuit – the first being run, the next 3 on the bike and a final, agonising, 8 mile run. Each lap concludes with the 1 and a half mile haul up the ZigZag to the summit of Box Hill.

It is a real race of truth – any skimping on winter training and this race will find you out.

The final climb is now part of the London Olympic 2012 road cycle route – 9 laps, no less, and where the rest of the Olympic teams will try and break Mark Cavendish before he gets a chance to sprint for Gold.

Things were not too promising – a good December and January training had been spoiled a bit by illness in February which cost most of the long bikes and runs planned, and although I’d targeted 3hrs 20 at the start of the year I was not confident.

I stayed at a mate’s house nearby so even though a 8am start it was relatively civilised; the day was cloudy, still but very cold. As ever there was a good buzz before the start and was especially pleased to see a couple of ITC members there, for the first time in the 4 Ballbusters I’ve done.

Racked, set up and went with overshoes and a jacket to put on in Transition – slight cost in time, but probably wise given the long, cold descents. Soon we were off and barrelled across the field to get to narrow exit like charging banshees. I settled into a decent rhythm and got warmed up. The number of pot holes in the road were worrying for the bike to come, but the lap passed without too much incident in 56:34, bang on schedule and feeling good.

T1 was a little long in 2:13 due to layering up, but I was soon off. However as soon as I started pedalling I realised the bike legs were not really there and it was going to be a long day. The laps are undulating for the first 3-4 miles, then a couple of miles of fast technical descents before that final climb, and before long it was climb No.2 of the day and drink/gel at the top. The second and third laps were similar – I was working very hard but not finding the pace required to get a 3:20 overall time. Bike finished in 1:26:15, another longish transition of 1:48 and then out for the run where you really find out where you are.

Target for a Ballbuster is to match your first run with the second – if you can do this, you can pat yourself on the back for being fit and judging the race well. I fell off my lap 1 pace, and however hard I worked could not pull it back; and then having worked so hard there was very little left for the final ascent of the ZigZag and I lost some 90 seconds on that climb alone. Final run time was 59:08 and overall time of 3:25:59.

With a good February I think I could have given 3:20 a real go, but overall happy with the result and pleased to have got such a tough race in the legs. My last 3 ballbusters have been 3hrs 24, 3hrs 25 and then this one – so I can claim consistency! It’s a great, if expensive, event and good to test yourself – and I’ve already pencilled the winter Ballbuster.

the "let's get hot - very, very hot" weight-loss method...
Dave Kay

Abu Dhabi Triathlon - 12th March 2011 - Dave Kay
(Written whilst stuck in an airport departure lounge with nothing better to do for two hours!)

Having had to withdraw from the inaugural 2010 edition of this race due to a bad back, I was keen not to miss this race, and had spent a few too many wintry days on the turbo in preparation. I arrived in Abu Dhabi late Wednesday for Saturday's race, and I had been monitoring the weather forecasts with a growing sense of unease - record temperatures were forecast. With this in mind, and on the basis of last year’s race reports, I left the wetsuit at home. Sure enough, we touched down at 8 pm to find it was 28 degrees and headed off to our hotel.

We were staying at the official event hotel, which (as I found out at breakfast) means that the pros were staying there. Munching toast while the likes of Craig Alexander, Rachel Joyce (Woodbridge girl), Julie Dibens and Faris Al-Sultan pick up their muesli was a little odd. I wandered out to the pool for a breather and 2011 World Ironman Campion Chris McCormack swam past. Quickly. The prize money that Abu Dhabi put up (including age group cash prizes) means that it has the deepest field outside Kona, as well as the fittest amateurs you’ve ever seen. I concentrated on keeping the activity under control and saving my energy for the race, which is easy to do when parked on a sun lounger and it’s too hot to move. When I went and dipped my toe in the sea, however, the wisdom of my wetsuit decision came into question. It was distinctly chilly, but I put it down to not being used to the heat.

The pre-race organization is second to none, and the registration, bike racking and bag-prepping were all very straightforward. At the pre-race briefing, we were told that the water temperature was 21 degrees, and that "wetsuits were optional, but you’d be mad not to use one" Bugger. A dash to the event expo (one shop) was fruitless, as loads of people had got there before me, and the only suits left were £400. I didn’t want to be warm that much, so I had little choice but to man up and swim in tri shorts. I think that the event organisers were perhaps a little too keen to publicise the winter sun benefits of Abu Dhabi, as there was no way that the water was that warm - more like 18 degrees, particularly further out in the lagoon.

Race day dawned and I was up at 4:30 for another breakfast surrounded by supreme physical specimens. Suitably intimidated, I met Simon Hance at the start and pumped up tyres, applied suncream and generally faffed about to stave off nerves. A 20 minute delay to the start didn’t help matters, but we age-groupers were suitably revved-up by watching the pro men and women start as the TV helicopter circled above us at low-level. All very Kona. Our turn eventually came and Simon and I joined the few other non-wetsuit-wearers at the start of the 2-lap swim, which was a sprint into the cool waters of the lagoon. I’d positioned myself back so I wouldn’t get in the way of the more bouyant rubbery types, but was pleasantly surprised to find myself cruising past several of them. My swim was okay considering, 59:02 which I was happy with. I really felt the cold in the second lap, and I was glad there wasn’t a third. The absence of a suit did make T1 simple though - shirt on, helmet on, go - and I was out and on the bike before I knew it.

The day was warming up, and I needed to as well. The swim had left me surprisingly cold, so I started the 200km bike way harder than I wanted to, just to get some feeling back in my body. The closed-road bike course was advertised as flat, fast and windy, and it lived up to all of those, with superb road surfaces and no traffic. We long-coursers were doing 2 and a half laps, the first 2 of which took in the Yas Marina F1 circuit, which was a highlight. I defy anyone, no matter how tired, to not speed up just a bit going round the track’s super-smooth tarmac. I was clipping apexes and powering out of corners, with my internal Murray Walker going mental. It was a necessary diversion from the rest of the course, which was very monotonous, especially as the short-course and sprint competitors dropped away in the latter laps. I went for long periods by myself which became mentally very hard as the temperature started to hit 38 degrees, and it seemed I was either getting tossed about by hairdryer-like crosswinds, or flogging into a headwind. The second trip round the circuit perked me up, as did seeing Simon hard on my tail at the turnround point, and I recovered from an overheating crisis to finish the bike in 5:57 and jogged into T2 in my bike shoes - a lucky decision, as I normally leave them on the bike, and apparently those that did were forced into a comedy run in bare feet over hot paving stones. Starting the 20km run with burnt feet would not have been good....

A quick change of shoes and I was out onto the run course, a flat 2-lap affair with a motivation-sapping dogleg midway through each lap lap. After nearly blowing up in the heat on the bike, I was at pains to keep cool and emptied every bottle of water I could over my head, which resulted in soaking shoes and the associated blisters. I felt surprisingly comfortable - not setting records, but I ran for the majority of it, and only felt sick after trying a disgusting coffee-flavoured gel. Support was a little more present here, with local and international school kids manning the aid stations, but the locals out taking a Saturday walk didn’t seem to be bothered that we were there and often just walked straight in the way. I nearly got taken out by a fishing rod in mid-cast at one point, which was not a hazard I expected. My 1:38 run was simply a matter of putting my head down and surviving, with every athlete that passed me waving in acknowledgement (and vice versa) of the pain that we were all going through. Despite keeping a relatively steady pace, I saw every heart rate between 120 and 170 as my body tried to figure out what was going on. There was no sprint as I ran up the finish chute, just relief that it was over as I crossed the line in 8:41, 22nd overall age group male and 5th in my age group.

The post-finish process was a little strange - here’s a medal, are you going to pass out? No, well, bye then... We were left to figure out where to go to pick stuff up ourselves, which, as the adrenaline dissipated and my body started asking for payback, was hard work. I was lucky that an attentive girlfriend was there to look after me, as I would have had trouble finding the bike racks, much less my bike. A lie down in the shade and a chocolate milkshake and I was feeling better, and we all welcomed Simon over the line after his heroic struggle through the heat of the run.

Recovering by the pool the next day, all the competitors I spoke to enjoyed the event in that perverse way that comes from voluntarily hurting yourself but surviving. I don’t think I’d rush back - Abu Dhabi is not a cheap place to holiday and there’s other places I’d rather go. Whilst an early-season race has definitely got the cycling legs in place for 2011, I think it dominated the winter months a bit too much at the expense of just running/skiing/whatever for the enjoyment of it. That said, I’m glad I did it, and I can say I finished a race that Macca didn’t!

In case you're wondering, we pair up with Newmarket for these events to boost numbers.

I have the full spreadsheet of results if anybody wants to see them.

Team Stannett warm up for Day One

Jurassic Coast Challenge - 25th to 27th March 2011 - Charlie Stannett

Entered as an interesting bit of endurance training, this triple off-road marathon event surpassed all expectations for numbers of steps climbed, steepness of hills, excellence of evening fodder & beer, and sheer good fun.

Stannett goes soft focus
Looking down from Gold Cap, about 75 miles done

Like its siblings the Atlantic & Pembroke Coast Challenges, it's billed as "78.6 miles, three days, two feet" but in my case it was nearer 80 miles following some unexpected scenic diversions somewhere around mile 25 on day three.

Definitely one to do if you're feeling stupid.

These are the prices for club kit 2010. The superseded reference pages on the club website give some descriptions of the kit but the prices you pay are those given here.

You must wear club kit to score points in the ITCH league (although discretion is used where, for example, you've tried to get kit but it hadn't arrived in time, or where you have a charity place which mandates you wear the charity's kit) and members of UK:A clubs are supposed to wear club kit anyway (e.g. for the cross-country series).

(Juniors should talk to Isabel, who has been running a junior-focussed scheme.)
