Junior training day - 10th May - Adrian Green

The first Ipswich Junior Triathlon Club Training day took place at Woodbridge School on 10th of May, with nine young members of the club.

First off we started with a Swim session concentrating on technique coached by Isabel Smith. The weather was very good but the outdoor pool at Woodbridge was a little cold for some of the younger children who had an early exit. We had a short break and then moved on to a cycle skills session to practice mounting and dismounting for quick transition and I can tell you that the children became very good at it. These nine 8-13 year olds can mount and dismount a bike better now than the majority of adults who did the Waveney Tri the following day. Nigel Dadge of Felixstome Running Club then took an excellent running session using the hills of the school grounds to maximuum effect. After a break to rest out of the sun the day finished off with a mini event. The children did a run-bike-run format around the undulating grounds of the school to put their new found skills into action.

The day was enjoyed by all and my thanks to Isabel, Nigel and Stuart the Lifeguard, parents and junior athletes who made the day so good.

Future training days with be on Sunday 22nd of June and Sunday 20th of July from 9am to 1pm at Woodbridge School.  We may also try and organise some other events at lower cost venues like Eyke or Stradbroke if we see a demand from a "core" of people.

Further information can be obtained on the series of training events or junior races by contacting Adrian Green, the clubs Development Officer on 01379 388855 or e-mail: juniors@ipswich-tri.org.

STOP PRESS

As ITCH was going to press, a load of photos of the June 22 training day arrived which should go on to www.ipswich-tri.org/titch later this week. Meanwhile we've been told there will be a two page spread on Ipswich Tri Club Juniors and the recent training day in the Evening Star, Monday 30th June, as part of a Grass roots sport feature.

Woodbridge fun run - 18th May - Sarah "Strivs" Miller

"Miller - the Next Generation"

Whilst dad David was busy seeing off the opposition in the adult race, his two youngest children - both members of Ipswich triathlon club - were competing in the junior race (chaperoned by me - step-mum Sarah).

The Miller approach to nutrition...
The Miller approach to nutrition...
It was a packed field and there was a lot of jostling for position on the school playing field, and we all set off at quite a pace.  Nicky, aged seven, decided to wait every so often for me to catch him up even though I urged him to keep going!  He finished 11th in his age group in a time of 8:23!

Becky, aged nine, had a more mature race plan & ran a very consistent pace to finish just behind her brother in 8:30.  This tactic paid off and she finished 3rd in her age group, and she was thrilled to be presented with her medal by the mayor of Woodbridge!

Well done to them both.

Looking through the results there was one other ITC junior in the race: well done also to Ruth Mallett who was 9th in her age group!

Triathlon England Eastern Region - North Norfolk junior triathlon.

Triathlon England Eastern Region are once again running a children’s Race Series.  The series is open to any member of an Eastern Region affiliated club - such as Ipswich triathlon club - who enters races under their Eastern Region Club Name (if running under a sponsors name then it is necessary to ensure the Eastern Region Club is also included in the results).

The number of qualifying events differs according to age group but plenty of events are available, all details can be found at the region’s website, www.triathlonenglandeast.org or, more specifically, at http://www.triathlonenglandeast.org/children.htm .

One such event was the North Norfolk junior triathlon, held on June 14th. Adrian writes: "Well done to Issie Wickens on winning her age group; good results for Charlotte and Lauren as well."

Full results - and dates of other events in the Norfolk/Suffolk junior championship - from http://www.tri-a-sport.co.uk/events.php

Leiston Swimming Club

A number of our junior members are already members of Leiston; Adrian Green and Leiston's Matt Dye are discussing ways of further developing on this relationship. Meanwhile Matt Dye writes:

We warmly offer an open invite to anyone interested in watching or hopefully participating in a FREE taster session, come & see one or more of our sessions on any Sunday (arrive 15mins before session time on the terrace) and speak to us about joining in.

Session guide, progressive from learn to swim upwards:

Sunday 6pm-6.45pm – This session is our learn to swim program where the pool is made up of widths from shallow to deep, plus an initial length lane for swimmers who can swim 2+ lengths on at least 2 of the full strokes. Ages 5 upwards.

Sunday 6.45pm-7.45pm – This session is for improving length swimmers who can swim at least 3 different strokes with correct technique for 50m+ moving up into early competitive standards.

Sunday 7.45pm-9pm – session for competitive swimmers who can swim all 4 strokes over multiple lengths. We have several county level swimmers and a county champion in this group !

If you are not sure, come along to an earlier session and we will assess you in what we think is an appropriate session, don’t be afraid to ask or contact Matt in advance for further info. We also swim on Friday & Monday nights for the length swimmers, once you’ve experienced a Sunday we can provide more details.

You can contact Matt through Adrian or direct by e-mailing matthew.dye@btinternet.com

Junior kit "buy-back" scheme.

The committee has agreed to introduce a "buy-back" scheme to reduce the cost of club kit to junior members whom we assume grow out of their kit before it wears out.

In essence:

If an individual does not return the kit in good condition at the end of the season, the buy-back offer lapses.

Mar 2008 - download entry form for the training programme [22kb PDF] file or view on screen.

IMPORTANT - although these training events have been scheduled to help you prepare for the Junior triathlon being held at Framlingham on August 24th, entry to the training programme does NOT automatically enter you for the triathlon itself.  You have to enter the junior triathlon separately.

Junior Triathlon on Sunday 24th August, 2008 - ENTRIES NOW OPEN - see Entry Central.

Jan 2008 - Adrian Green writes:

I have secured venues for 4 dates for Triathlon training days. These dates will enable you to train every month in build up to the Ipswich Junior Triathlon race at Framlingham on the 24th of August.

All of the training dates have been selected to avoid dates for junior races in the Eastern region.

Eastern Region races can be found on http://www.triathlonenglandeast.org/ by clicking on the Childrens tab.

Following dates are all at Woodbridge School

Details of the content of all sessions will be sent out nearer the time.

Both venues have swimming pools so this allows us the potential to cover every aspect of triathlon in each session.

If there are any parents who would like to volunteer to help with the junior side of the club I would love to hear from you.

  1. I need help in promoting the events
  2. Chaperones /crowd control for groups on the training days.
  3. Developing the juniors section (sub-committee to help us maintian Clubmark standards)
  4. Finding sponsorship to allow us to expand our activities.
  5. Developing coaching resources.

I am quite open to any ideas or feedback. One thing I am looking at with the committee is a trade in system for junior Tri-suits. We have identified that these suits are expensive and may only be worn once or twicebefore your child grows (again). We will be discussing a buy one tri-suit for 8-16's at the next committee meeting.

The club committee are strongly backing the junior section. They have funded Squad T-shirts, all named events above and have backed me in getting more people qualified as coaches.

I really do need some parents to step forward an help me move things forward, e-mail me...call me on 01379 388855.

Lastly I would like to thank John Gabriel for all the help and advice he gave in 2007 not only to me but also all of you. Unfortunately John has left the club and is moving at some point to the Midlands I hope you will join me in wishing him all the best for the future.

Please help me in making 2008 a very good year for Ipswich Junior Triathlon Club. I am positive we can improve on 2007.

Best Regards,
Adrian
