Ironman Copenhagen 2026 turned into a brilliant weekend for Ipswich Triathlon Club, with members racing, supporting and following along from home.
The club was represented on the start line by Jacob Howard and Tara Allen, with Tara taking on the full Ironman distance for the first time. It was also fantastic to have members James, Jackie, Daren, Mark and Gemma out in Copenhagen supporting around the course.
That support made a real difference. Ironman days are long for everyone involved, not just the athletes, and having familiar faces on the course always gives a welcome lift when it’s needed most.
For Jacob, Copenhagen marked a return to Ironman racing after a year away following a stress fracture. Having spent much of his time helping clubmates work towards their own goals as ITC Head Coach, returning to the start line himself made the race particularly meaningful. His day came together well, with a 1:03 swim, 4:55 bike and 3:35 marathon, finishing in 9:45:50. It was a personal best and a satisfying result after a patient build back from injury.
Tara’s performance was the culmination of nine months of dedicated training. While built on the foundation of a few years of competing at the half-Ironman distance, stepping up to the full distance was a monumental leap into the unknown. Lining up on the start line, the sheer magnitude of the day was daunting and reaching the finish line felt far from guaranteed. Proving to herself that she had what it took was an immensely proud moment and she said “looking back now, it still feels surreal that my legs got through all 140.6 miles in one piece”.
Both members had plenty of support from the club before race day too, whether through training sessions, messages of encouragement, or people tracking progress on the day. That club backing is a big part of what makes these events feel special.
A huge well done to both Jacob and Tara for representing ITC so well, and a special mention to Tara for earning those famous words for the first time: “You are an Ironman.”
Thank you to everyone who travelled, supported, tracked online or sent messages afterwards. It was a proper club effort, and it was great to see the ITC colours out in Copenhagen.
Although some members still have racing this season, planning has started for Ironman Barcelona in October 2027, where it would be fantastic to see an even bigger Ipswich Triathlon Club presence on the start line and around the course. Whether racing, supporting or spectating, we will be arranging some webinars for club members in September for anyone interested in the logistics of competing abroad, racing Ironman-branded triathlons, and Barcelona specifically.
